I'm sorry, destroying nearly half of shareholder value is not an admirable thing, no matter how you sliceit.
No Sakal/CAI on the list?
The companies in the poll are listed in order from the 2008 "America's Most Admired Companies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America%27s_Most_Admired_Companies)" list published by Fortune Magazine on Feb 29th.
You just need Sakal to get on Fortune's radar...
UPS didn't partner with the government agency which restricted it's market from the beginning.
Johnson & Johnson - Longevity and stability. Not great by itself, but they always make money. Their products are in demand in both good and bad economic times, their customers and investors are happy, and I can't recall any big scandals about them. P&G is pretty good too, but I'm partial to J&J - especially as I'm wearing several bandaids at the moment.

I was not aware of that. Hmmmm. As far as oil companies, I had forgotten about them, I do have an admiration for some things about them. The problem with a lot of big businesses is the same as a lot of other sized businesses, they go crying and/or begging to the government to get their way or a hand-out. I can't stand individuals doing that, same as groups of individuals. Doesn't matter if they're for or non profits.
GOOG has gone from $740 last November down to under $450 today.

You work at Sony Creative Software (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Creative_Software)?
... here's what you append to all your forum posts if you want every person viewing them to hammer maqs.com for ~8MB of bandwidth: |
Very strange, given that a lot more people use Microsoft products than Apple (http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=8) or Google (http://marketshare.hitslink.com/search-engine-market-share.aspx?qprid=5). I think it's all the socialist "monopoly" bullshit that's hurting them. :x

Argumentum ad populum is a logical fallacy, but we are talking about the subjective marketplace here. The purpose of a product is to sell well, thus Microsoft products are successful. A competitor is free to enter the global marketplace at any time to offer better software - many have tried and failed.

Ask Steve Jobs if he thinks the purpose of the product is to sell well.

I don't know Steve Jobs.
Nor use any of his software products.
Nor do any of my friends / coworkers...
"Do No Evil" may be Google's motto, but they're in bed with the government, more so than is publicly known. Plus they're centralizing the Internet, squashing better technologies like open source search, P2P video streaming, etc in the process. They are a publicly traded company, and their revenue model depends on taking away your right to block their ads / tracking code, etc. Sooner or later, Evil will emerge.
Voted Google, Microsoft, Target in that order.
Google - Do No Evil is their motto, plus they are overall and amazing company.
Microsoft - They have affected my life in so many great ways with their amazing product.
Target - Um, I like their clothing and prices. Yep.
Apple - I cannot stand them or their fanboys. Product=sucktacular Handling of the greatest band evah (Beatles)= also sucktacular
I dont drink coffee so Starbucks is bleh.
The rest I either know nothing about or just am neutral about.
...
Remember Target supports national slavery
