Title: Police question - Obstruction of Justice
Post by: imagerynine on January 10, 2015, 02:49:01 AM
State of California.

I work in the hospitality industry as a department head and today an uniformed police officer came by and asked for info on one of our employees. She asked if he had a warrant and he said he forgot it, thus she didn't give him any info.

She informed me that since the employee was working that evening to get her first if anyone comes by. Later on while the employee was working a uniformed officer came in and asked for the employee, I told him to wait a minute and called for the manager to come over. When I returned I explained to him that our Manager on Duty is coming and it's procedure for a situation like this to go through her. He wrote down my name and threatened to arrest me for "obstructing justice". I then asked if he had a warrant, he said he did but didn't have to show me and again accused me of obstructing justice. I stepped away to see where the employee was and when I returned he was talking to our manager and told her I was interfering. She explained that I was just following company protocol and we got the employee for him, which he arrested (still without providing a warrant which she requested). He did not address me further.

I am wondering if this was just a scare tactic or if I can face any legal trouble because of this incident? I've just been stressing all night that someone is going to come after me for "obstruction of justice" when I was just trying to follow procedure...any insight?

Scare tactic.  He turned bully because you did not instantly comply.  Also known as "contempt of cop".
