The Show / Re: Wal Mart & Healthcare
« on: July 05, 2009, 12:01:04 PM »
Face it--Mom and Pop were put out of business years ago by K-Mart, Shop-Co, and Target. Hell, there were big box stores all over the place when I was a kid. Anyone remember White Front and Cal-Co?

Anyway, Mom and Pop may have been a kindly old couple, but their prices sucked and they had no selection. They were due for retirement. Some of them sold out and now work as managers for Wal Mart.

Ain't that the truth.  I remember one store in my town.  Far back as I can remember it started as a Hills, then was a Gold Circle, then Kmart bought them up.  That was probably 20 years ago or more.  That Kmart store is now closed and it's a big empty waste of space.

The fact is that in today's economy, businesses get eaten up by the competition.  If they aren't bought out, they're pretty much run into the ground and forced to close.  It's not just Wal-mart, they are definitely not the only problem.  Walgreens wanted to build in one town here.  The town said ok, and made a WHOLE STRIP PLAZA relocate.  Almost none of the businesses survived when they moved.  Guess what?  Walgreens still hasn't built there after 5 years.  In another case, Walgreens took over wooded land in another town.  Built their building, even to the point of finishing the parking lot.  The town wouldn't allow them to open up because Walgreens wouldn't move the enterance because it would cause a traffic jam.  Guess what?  It's a big empty building now instead of a wooded area.

The fact is, without the government having as much power as they do, corporations wouldn't have the power that they do.  Never mind that the very existence of corporations in itself is a fucking sham set up so that the people who start them and run them can do anything they want without personal liability because the government allows a public company to exist as it's own entity.  Therefore, not one person is accountable for the company unless there is a financial issue.  Even then, they'll just suffer some headaches, but none of their personal artifacts get touched.

I'm all for people starting businesses, but the bottom line is you have to be accountable for your actions.  The very nature of government does not allow this.   Yes, these corporations have made everything cheaper in most cases, and everything is available pretty much everywhere now, but at what cost -- not to our pocket books, but to the extent that our supporting of these corporations fuels government just as much as supporting government fuels these corporations.  In the end, we lose because we lost something of value whether it be a friendly face and amazing customer service or a nice wooded area to look at in an already overcrowded town.

Colorado is as free if not more than NH, I've heard Mark and Ian say that NH has recently been named the freest state in the union.  True but what they don't say is it tied with Colorado.

Open carry?  Check
Shall issue?  Check
Relatively low taxes?  Check
Several unincorporated municipalities?  Check
Pot legal in Denver?  Check
A libertarian streak that runs through CO the size of NH?  Check

Also, moving to the east coast for freedom is fucking retarded.

We did say one time on the show that NH, Colorado, and South Dakota were a virtual tie. I don't know that I would move if I were in Colorado or SD. I think Florida got short shrift in the study, they have tourists pay most of their taxes. But what advice do you have for libertarians living in Mass., VT, NY, NJ, Conn., and RI?

If NH is just as free as Colorado, why is it retarded to move here for freedom? Is there any real practical difference between the amount of money and time it takes to move from Cali to NH than from Cali to Colorado?

This would be my main reason for moving to NH from NY.  Granted, CO  and SD have just as much freedom, but if I wanted to live in 50 acres by myself and no socialize with anyone, I'd just do that here in NY.  Yes, still want to live on acreage, but I like what I'm seeing from the community spirit in NH.  I'm just not thrilled about some of the actions of the free staters, especially the younger ones.  This may end up driving me away in the end, along with other people.

I guess it comes down to what you are looking to achieve in your fight for liberty.  Are you looking to stand up to the government, willing to go to jail if need be?  Then you better have a good bit of help behind you, NH is your place.  If you are just looking to get out of a socialist state into a less socialist state, then NH, CO, and SD are all good choices.  Just keep in mind, if you get in trouble, CO and SD probably don't have people as willing to help as NH would.

I'm still torn right now, but I have at least a couple of years before I really can decide anyways.  I'm slowly liking what I'm seeing in NH.  The whole Sam in jail episode kinda pushed me away a little bit.

I'm really upset about this too.  There's not really a good replacement yet for pirate bay, but I'd recommond minonova or isohunt.  No way will I ever use demonoid or any service that forces me to sign into an account where my activity can be recorded.

That's my biggest issue with Demonoid.  I never signed up for an account with TPB either.  I think ISOhunt might be my choice now.

I completely agree with you Ian.  TPB is gone, hopefully new pirates will pick up where they left off and copy their work, since they actually want people to copy their work.

I have a G1 Android phone.  I also listen to it through Google Reader, and at work I usually listen to it in WinAmp, which sends what I'm listening to to Last.FM, which gets posted on my FriendFeed page.

I have no use for itunes, otherwise I'd help :)

Hey, how did you get the Mibbit IRC to save a file of what was written on it? Or did you just copy & paste.

You do realize that you can access the chat from ANY IRC program right?

If I had the money, and knew either French, German, or Italian I'd move to Switzerland in a heartbeat. Switzerland has historically been one of the most stable countries in Europe, and probably the most friendliest to those who have money.

Completely agree, I would too.  In a heartbeat.

Buyer/investor beware.  While I agree what Madoff did was insanely wrong, what these people did was also insanely wrong.  What's too good to be true, usually, is too good to be true.  Then again, I never invested in the stock market because all I thought it was was a casino.  Turns out I was right.

But yeah, these "victims" need to just go away.  Maybe some good will come out of this.  It'll teach their stuck-up, rich asses a thing or two, and maybe even have to...*SHOCK*....cut back on some expenses!

I love my G1 Android phone.  yes, it has its quirks.  But at least I'm able to pretty much do anything I want with it and not be locked out by a company who thinks they know best.  Which, coincidently is why I have no Windows machines at home.  All have been switched to Linux for some years now.  I'm just waiting for iPhone developers to get sick of Apple's bullcrap and move to Android.

THANK YOU! These videos are needed to be seen all around America.  They all show how government is the cause of a lot of the problems in our lives.  I say spread this around to as many people as you can, very good stuff here.

The Show / Re: Total site redesign
« on: May 06, 2009, 12:06:41 PM »
I do think the website needs a redesign.  The forum is unique in that there's hardly any rules at all.  Not many social networking sites will put up with that.  Ning is about the only social network that I can think of that allows you to create your own social network but whether they'd allow the content that gets posted on here is a whole other issue.  They could switch to SocialEngine http://www.socialengine.net/ but that's $250 for the software to host on your own servers.  That might be the way to go.

1) can Burke imprison Sam forever so long as Sam refuses to ID himself?  I think not but I don't know the law on this issue.
This is the government we're talking about here.  They make up the rules as they go along.  It's like playing Monopoly and the banker always changing the rules of the Free Parking space.

2) if Sam wants to testify at his own trial, will he be required to ID himself in order to do so?  Would his continued refusal to ID himself result in the exclusion of his testimony?
As long as he refuses to ID himself, I highly doubt there will be a trial.

I'm slowly starting to come around and see what the point of all this was.  While I don't agree with it or how it all went down, the end result is the government is forcing their will on a person who doesn't wish their will imposed on.  With all of the other stuff that they have collected verifying his "legal name", there is NO reason why he should not have been released once they found out what his legal name is.

This is just a game of "who blinks first" between two goldfish and nothing more.  Sadly, I think Sam might end up losing this one due to his body shutting down from the hunger strike before the government gives in.

« on: May 02, 2009, 12:30:25 AM »
I'm not a fan of gold's.  It seems that every time I've tried to cancel after my contract is up, they never seem to do.  The one down here is trying to charge me like $800 because according to them, I never cancelled.  Be careful.

ouch that sucks.  I'll be on the lookout for that if/when I decide to not renew.  I know each Gold's is franchised, so I'm hoping the one in your area is just run by a piece of shit.  So far I have nothing bad to say about the one up here, the guy ones the one I go to and another one about 15 mins away.  We'll see.

I found a gym.  38.99 per month, no contracts.  Looks like a decent gym.  I will be checking it out tomorrow.

Also, I walked a half marathon today, that was 13.1  miles.  I'm tired.  Not too sore, but tired.

Nice...no contracts is nice.  I'm paying $39/month at Gold's Gym, but it's a contract.  Good luck! :)
