I drop by from time to time, just to see if things here have picked up. A handful of trolls caused this BBS to crash and burn some time ago, and now the board is pretty much just given over to occasional pictures of boobs and bums, and little to nothing of any real substance. Of the half dozen or so boards I visit, this has gone from being the most to least active.

I sleep with a married woman every night. I don't understand the problem. (Of course, she's married to me.)

What the HELL? That hardly seems right or fair!

I still drop in from time to time, and have always found CA's China posts fascinating. I might do a home exchange there sometime.

Each time I do drop in on this forum, it's a deader than the last time. Too bad, as it used to be so active. I guess the trolls drove everyone away.

There was such a project. In New Hampshire, I think it was. But, when Washington State legalized both gay marriage and pot, I think everyone moved here.

People who regularly overuse alcohol and other sedative-hypnotics become physically dependent on the substance. Quitting results in side effects, sometimes severe ones. About half of heavy regular users will experience severe withdrawal, including insomnia, digestive difficulties, nightmares, and nervousness. These symptoms peak at about five days, and then begin to taper off, though they may last for months.

People with very heavy dependence can also have hallucinations on quitting, as well as life-threatening heart problems. In these cases, withdrawal is best done under medical supervision. Mortality runs about 15% for patients under medical treatment, as compared to 35% without such treatment. Because alcohol is legal, many people don't consider it dangerous. The realty is that it is the most dangerous of all drugs to withdrawal from heavy use.

If you are regularly ingesting more than a six-pack per day of beer, or a pint of distilled spirits, then you probably should talk to a doctor about quitting.

I give the  theories what I call the "three point" test. I just don't have the time to spend hours researching every crackpot conspiracy theory that the nuts roll out. So, I ask for the best three proofs, and then look into those. If they turn out to be bullshit, then please don't even suggest any further "evidence."

General / "Z for Vendetta" shown on Chinese TV
« on: December 20, 2012, 09:52:37 AM »
In an event that shocked viewers, the liberty-themed film "V for Vendetta" was broadcast on Chinese television yesterday.

Quote
Beijing-based rights activist Hu Jia wrote on Twitter, which is not accessible to most Chinese because of government Internet controls: "This great film couldn't be any more appropriate for our current situation. Dictators, prisons, secret police, media control, riots, getting rid of 'heretics' ... fear, evasion, challenging lies, overcoming fear, resistance, overthrowing tyranny ... China's dictators and its citizens also have this relationship."

Serious Business / Re: Tea Party?
« on: September 12, 2012, 07:30:06 PM »
It goes like this. "We're for small government."

Me: "Oh, good. Then you won't mind if I relax after work with a little marijuana."

Tea Party: "Well, no. You can't do that."

Me: "Shit. At least you're small government won't mind if I marry my boyfriend."

Tea Party: "No! Never! The government has the power to decide who you should love."

Me: "At the very least, I'm sure you want to decrease government spending, including the military."

Tea Party: "God, no! We want to increase military spending. It's our God-given duty to spread peace through war."

Me: "So, let's see...you're in favor of smaller government except you want to increase government power over personal lives and increase spending on the biggest item in the federal budget."

Humm...I should maybe get one of those coal furnaces. The heating plant I'm currently working in used to burn coal, but converted years ago. However, they've still got half a bunker full of coal. Probably enough to last me for some years. It's just sitting there. "I would not mind so much if it went missing," my boss said. "Saves me the cost of throwing it out."

It will probably sit there until the (very old and condemned) building gets torn down.

I used to work in another large heating plant that burned coal, and it was a pain in the ass. We burned about four tons of pulverized coal an hour, and fed the resulting smoke though a scrubber and baghouse. It kept us too busy even to take breaks or lunch. I'd come home covered in coal dust and ash. God, was I happy when they gave up on coal and went back to gas!

General / Re: How would the free market handle forest fires?
« on: July 09, 2012, 02:39:11 PM »
The assumption of the initial question is that the government does a crack job of handling forest fires. Not being in the fire-fighting buz myself, I'm not sure what solution the market would come up with. But, whatever it is, it's almost certainly going to be better than having government handle the matter.

If you're really concerned about forest fires, then I am sure you will be one of the many people willing to volunteer to help fight them. People do volunteer. In fact, I'm a member of the Amateur Radio Emergency Services, and one of the functions of that organization is to help out with such disasters. Just about every year, the local group gets called out to help provide communications for fire fighting services.

I lost interest in this BBS when it disintegrated into mainly an all-troll zone.
