The Polling Pit / State of The Union: You Watching?
« on: January 28, 2008, 09:05:49 PM »
I'm normally one of those people who drop everything to watch the annual address. This year, not so much. I'm not sure if it's because the presidential primaries are giving me a high enough dose of politics, or if it's just being tired of hearing the lies and demands on my checkbook. I'm thinking TIVO, so I can decide later.

Granted, if Paula calls in on the current abortion topic, I might change my mind & switch over to MSNBC.

General / Yet Another "What are you reading?" Thread
« on: January 17, 2008, 02:19:12 PM »
Emptied the camera, and thought I'd share my post-run-recovery-beer reading from earlier this week:

Is Live Free or Die, complete with fuzzy kid-made bookmark.
I'm only part way through the book, just read the essays on price gouging and Baby Boon, but am really enjoying it.
Favorite at this point is Approving the Message.

The Polling Pit / Breakfast?
« on: November 12, 2007, 07:38:23 AM »
Didn't used to be a big fan of breakfast. Now, my whole day is off without it.
Berries, banana, yogurt & granola w/ sunflower seeds is my normal morning fare.

The Polling Pit / HS Reunions
« on: October 13, 2007, 11:06:07 PM »
So, opened the notice of my high school reunion this evening. The stream of profanity issuing from my mouth elicited comments & questions from a certain person, who will remain nameless. I'm just wondering if I'm alone in not having a particularly strong desire to go hang out with people I haven't seen since I was 16.

Photoshops / Debate Inspired Photoshops
« on: May 03, 2007, 11:45:39 PM »
So. I watched the Republican debate. Made the comment about John McCain "What an angry little man".
Response from Matt was "kind of like an evil garden gnome, isn't he?"

So, in keeping with McCain's desire to follow Bin Laden to the gates of hell.....

(I think I might need to scale the gnome up a bit, but I think McCain's jowls worked well)

The Polling Pit / Government or Private Education?
« on: March 05, 2007, 09:50:33 AM »
I met several young people at the NHLF who impressed the heck out of me. The group from SUNY stands out in my memory, as does MobileDigit, who drove up from Georgia with his dad to attend the forum.

I'm curious as to where all the independent thinkers here on the FTL boards developed that independence.
Is it the result of encouragement in a private school or homeschool setting?
A backlash of the repressive group think taught in govt. schools?
Parents who challenged you to think for yourself, or at least nurtured your curious nature?

Photoshops / Torgo Knows Best...
« on: November 12, 2006, 06:13:07 PM »
I had Matt help me with my "no more braces" photo, which I'm hoping will be replacing my shrine photo. Decided to be a bit silly and go Donna Reed. Used a couple of the taglines from the web banner ads. Sent those in.

This tagline was suggested for my retro, booze-swilling, housewife themed photo. Can't really use these pix, since Torgo isn't currently on the air -  thought it was catchy, so here's my entry for the Torgo Fan Club.

General / Liberty Promoting Halloween Costumes?
« on: October 30, 2006, 09:49:05 AM »
If you are donning a costume tomorrow for Halloween, or did for a party this past weekend, did you take the chance to mix it with a Liberty/Freedom-minded message?

Historic Patriot?
Anti-Government Fictional Character?
Mocking version of a Government Official?

If I can pick up a torch & crown today at Party City, I'm going to do a modern-day Lady Liberty thing. A blouse that's similar in color to the statue's patina inspired me. Have to work it in such a way that I can wander through my normal day of office, school pick-up, kid's sports & trick-or-treating, but I think I'll mount a segment of "The New Colossus" on a piece of foamcore to carry with me for the day.

Not actually a photoshop, but odd enough to be one.

Have to agree with The Manolo - a crime against inhumanity.

What would happen to the length of horror films if the girl owned a gun?

If you've seen this, I apologize. It had a Feb. 2006 date on Google Video, so it's possible. If not, please enjoy.

General / Kat Dillon & the "Women Who Make It Happen" in NH Magazine
« on: April 20, 2006, 01:50:26 PM »
I just rec'd my (1st) May edition of New Hampshire Magazine. One of the cover articles is "18 Women Who Make It Happen: Advocates, Activists, and Agitators."

In the Agitators portion, number one is Kat Dillon, who is listed as as Free State Fundamentalist. If I can't find a link on line, I'll type up the article in quote form and add it to this post shortly.....

Still the April edition online, so here goes (NH Magazine, May 2006, pg 52):

Kat Dillon: She's only lived here for two years, but has quickly become one of the most vocal Libertarians in the state. She moved to Keene as part of the Free State Project, an effort to shift the political balance by moving 20,000 Libertarians to New Hampshire.

Last spring, Dillon received the most notorious manicure in state history: the one given by an unlicensed practitioner in a public protest of state licensing. In February, she and her husband Russell Kanning were arrested outside a Manchester building where President Bush was giving a speech for refusing to move to a designated protest area.

Dillon is even putting her home on the line for her principles: she is refusing to pay the school portion of her property taxes because public schools "teach conformity, and they don't teach much else." Need we say that her daughter is home schooled?

General / Fire-breather to Incinerate Libz Census Forms

Census Event - Wellington, NZ
Fire-breather to Incinerate Libz Census Forms

Libertarianz members in Wellington will be incinerating their census forms with the help of a fire-breather on census night, Tuesday 7th March.

Libertarianz leader, Bernard Darnton, announced the event today, saying that “the census is a blatant example of Government intrusion into people's private lives and should not be tolerated.”

The fire-breather will be performing on the Sound Shell Lawn in the Wellington Botanic Gardens at 8.30pm on census night and everyone who opposes the compulsory collection of personal information is welcome.

Libertarianz members in other parts of the country will also be barbecuing their census forms.

“The correct response,” Darnton says, “when Government agents come knocking on the door asking for personal information, is not to meekly comply with every request but to tell them to go to hell.”

“The idea that it's essential for the Government to gather all of this information is a nonsense. Germany doesn't have censuses and they seem to get on much better without them than they have in the past with them. All of this information gathering is simply nosy-parking to which the response should be a hearty 'Bugger off'.”
