General / Car crashes
« on: October 06, 2010, 10:45:47 PM »
Would you stop to be a witness if you saw one?

If you didn't want to be a witness (and I can understand not wanting to be pulled in to a court case), would you at least inquire as to whether everyone is OK? Last time I saw a crash I did the latter part only, because of the former part. I calmed a lady down and called 911 for her, wasn't too serious a crash but she was hurt.

I was in a crash today and no one even rolled down their windows - even the people I (narrowly)managed to avoid! No one stopped except for the cops.

Also, if you are being referred to as "white boy" in a condescending way, from someone who has just caused a car accident involving you, how would you respond? I asked him why he was calling me "white boy". He seemed perplexed.

End result: one cop told me he had viewed the street camera footage which had caught the crash and that the other guy's story was a lie. I don't like the street cameras, but damn.. this one did me a favor! Have to admit I was pretty impressed with how quickly the footage was available.

The other guy claimed I had run the red light, which I didn't. He had made a (legal) right turn on red from a cross street all the way into the far left lane where I was traveling through the intersection on a green light.

I won't get my hopes up until all the stuff has been processed though.

All damage on the front passenger side: bumper, fender, signal, door, side mirror, broken tie rod, flattened tire, bent rim & probably more. Changed the tire after the crash & the tire is rubbing the wheel well pretty rough. Luckily this happened right across the street from the shop that has done repairs on my car previously so I didn't have to drive far. Luckier still, my kids weren't in the car.

I can't get away from Goobers lately. I've even dosed a little extra insulin and skipped other carbs to make sure I can eat 'em. Been buying them by the bag, not the box.

General / Financial contributions to close-knit liberty projects
« on: September 14, 2010, 11:47:37 PM »
Minor whines within this post, but I'm genuinely curious..

Went to freekeene.com after hearing about their free audiobook/e-book section of the site (http://freekeene.com/free-audiobook/) and noticed a request for donations for advertising funds. The copy in the ad says the money will be used to advertise Free Keene on Ridley Report, Liberty Conspiracy & Free Minds.

I understand that these projects cost money to run, but for different projects pretty much contained within the same movement, isn't there some other way to handle the financial end of things instead of doing the normal cash trade?

My problem isn't actually about the money - I think all the people behind the projects deserve some cash for their efforts. But why would I pay Free Keene so they can buy ad space on Gards show? Yeah, FK isn't technically part of LRN, but it ain't such a far stretch to say that it is.

Does Ridley pay to have his projects plugged on FTL? I don't think he should. Therefore I don't think Free Keene should have to pay Ridley. Guard is a co-host on FTL sometimes where Liberty Conspiracy is mentioned pretty often (not just on the shows he guests on, just in general).. why would FK need to pay Liberty Conspiracy?

Isn't this all pretty old-fashioned for a movement with the goal to reboot how things are done? Or am I leaning way too far into the Agorism end of things?

Too much crossover in all these projects, to me. Not just in content (same topics examined from the same perspective on different shows) but also in the people on the shows...

School Sucks Podcast (I like that one a lot) interviews Gard from Liberty Conspiracy (or was it the other way around?)/Gard occasionally co-hosts FTL/FTL demonstrates outside schools with School Sucks banners/Baklava George had an ad or two on FTL/Wheels Off Liberty (like this one too) talk about Baklava George on every episode I've listened to.

Is it me or are there too many spin-off shows? It's too similar a format to be spread around so closely.

Having the guests switch shows is a new way of doing things, I like that.

I guess it comes down to me wondering how successful each project can be when it's so close-knit & so similar.

They first became aware of his existence nearly 15 years ago and for a decade launched numerous expeditions to track him, to ensure his safety, and to try to establish peaceful contact with him. In 2007, with ranching and logging closing in quickly on all sides, government officials declared a 31-square-mile area around him off-limits to trespassing and development.

Just returned from a meet-n-greet wiff my son's new teach.

Stuff I noticed and don't like (got anything to share?):

- two-way mirrors separate the classroom from a smaller room in the corner. I asked what the extra little room was for.. "That's so a parent can come and observe their child in class anytime they want without interrupting the students!" she said giddily while shitting butterflies. "And also allow for discreet monitoring of all classroom activities, or of a particular student in general, by other persons of authority." I thought.

- this year, each student is required to possess an official "School Planner". They cost 5 bucks and you can only buy them at the school.

- my ex followed instructions and bought all the items on the school supplies list. Just some of the stuff contained within the heavy bag she saddled me with to carry upstairs, unaided: 2 boxes of tissues, 2 packs of wet wipes, hand sanitizers, 2 packs of pencils (for a total of 100), and 2 packs copy paper.

My kid will probably use all the tissues himself, in a matter of just weeks, but as for the rest of it.. if each kid brings in a hundred pencils.. 25 students.. 2,500 pencils from just one class. ...   The copy paper.. that will be used by the PTA to print out requests for money every other week.

Yes, I know the drill about "Well just take him outta public skoo!". Not an option right now. I need to maintain my current lifestyle of working to pay for my Escalade and Starter-Castle, upgrade my home theatre each season, etc.

General / Private DMV offices
« on: August 17, 2010, 08:38:51 PM »
Anybody know about the relationships between gov. offices and private DMV offices?

Here in NC, it's said that the DMV (Division of Motor Vehicles) offices are privately owned and operated.

Since it's a "division" of the overall NCDOT (Department of Transportation), which is run by the gov., how is it that the DMV can be considered private?

Private, but regulated by the NCDOT?

If the DMV here is truly a private operation, it doesn't provide any better services than what I image the gov. office would do.

General / Public libraries
« on: August 16, 2010, 09:48:07 PM »
Here's an exchange from facebook today. Background tidbit- I had lunch with "Gal1" today, an old pal who adores everything about governing the peoples. Liberal background, journalist by trade. She totally dominated our 2 hour lunch today with endless details about "how the government works". It immediately reminded me of Shaw and Osborne's new vid about the complicated explanations of how the planets turn. Her emotion really showed when I mentioned I do not support public libraries or forcing people without kids to pay for public schools. Later on she posted this Q: and I sank so low as to get myself into a facebook debate. I know I sound like a douche.. but admit it's kinda fun, and a break from what I normally do on fb which is basically nothin.

Gal1: Remind me again why public money should be used to support libraries? Serious question. (I'm not anti-library, I'm just interested in other people's reasons.)

Me: Probable Unpopular Answer: because if private organizations continue to provide social services to underprivileged folks, the gov. might appear to be inept, or worse, careless!

And before the "hub of educational information provided for free... for the betterment of citizens" angle is introduced.. I can appreciate the people who use the library for such means- however, Pop Fiction seems to be the most active section of the library when I've gone there- that and the free internets (with filtered content and monitored usage).

Guy, Friend of Gal1: Well, I do like how David is categorizing the habits of most library users based on his own singular experience. I wonder, if you don't have need for, say, the job help resources of the library, do you REALLY pay that much attention to how ...much use it's getting, if you pay attention to it at all? My guess is no, and that you see the "most" use in areas you're using not necessarily because they're the most used (although they may well be), but because you're there and using them. And just because some resources are LESS used doesn't mean they're NOT used.

And then I could point out that the fact that he even has a library experience to base his thoughts on means that he is a library user as well, thus he is taking advantage of the service "his" tax dollars pay for.

Personally, I know that even when I did have a job, and certainly now that I'm between jobs, that still didn't mean I had the money to afford all the books and other options the library has to offer but that I might like to enjoy. Reading is an educational experience, even if it's fiction and not an encyclopedia or "Tax Dollars for Dummies."

Me: Hi Jason! Much to your relief I'm sure, I do not possess a library card. I did when my son was young and noticed on our seldom visits to libraries that the reference desk and non-fiction areas were consistently underpopulated as opposed to ...the DVD/CD/non-fiction/children's books areas. This personal experience confirms my theory that many, perhaps and likely most, but certainly not all library users are interested in satiating a base instinct to become entertained rather than widen the horizons of their natural human potential. Kudos to you and others as savvy as yourself to discover and use the library for it's historically intended purpose.

Alternatively, I have noted, from personal experience, that bookstores (Borders, specifically) have many customers and visitors who seem to flock not only to the DVD/CD section but also to the technology (where the books are up-to-date), self-improvement, religion and philosophy sections. I'm quite certain they provide free wifi as well, and some entertainment on occasion. And food and beverage also. And free wifi. It appears to be a successful private venture. And browsing is free.

Truly, I like the *idea* of public libraries. But today their purpose seems to be migrating away from an intellectual zone into a babysitting/social services zone. "My" tax dollars already go toward social services; a library doesn't need to become an extension of these service outlets already in use. However, if "you" like "your" tax dollars to be used in repetitive ways that entertain the many and assist the leftovers, then don't be skimpy. Go hardcore and give more! That insignificant little fraction of a dollar doesn't appear to be enough, so it should be up to those who actually use the library to keep the doors open. I hear they require volunteers from time to time as well, and you did mention you were between jobs..

Finally, I object to banning books and internet sites from public libraries. The duality of providing access points for information and then restricting certain information has always seemed odd. That's why I consider private libraries a better option- but then that would require individuals cooperating with one another to reach a common goal- but we're too busy arguing on facebook these days :)

General / Best free online video chat?
« on: August 14, 2010, 08:08:16 PM »
Looking for a site that my kids can use to chat with their grandparents. Would like to have something that doesn't require any software to be installed, is so easy that kids & the elderly can use it. Don't want anything like chatroulette (where strangers can connect).

Probably a no-brainer for y'all, but I've never even used a web cam.

General / Been to Disney lately?
« on: July 13, 2010, 10:17:40 PM »
Just returned from a 4 day stay at the parks, and I'm here to report a couple of "Big Brother" things that most people probably haven't considered.

-To enter the parks, ya gotta place your finger into a scanner at the time of inserting your swipe-card entry ticket. Each "guest" gets one of these bar coded cards assigned to them. My kids didn't have to do the print scanner thing.

*fingerprint associated with name*

-At the Spaceship Earth ride inside the big globe at Epcot, they snap your picture and then ask a few questions- where you're from, what your interests are, etc. At the end of that ride your presented a video of your face superimposed on a character acting out various scenarios according to what choices you made during the ride. They'll email that vid to you if you give them your email address..

*fingerprint associated with name, with photo, where you reside, and email address*

Since I'm not into conspiracies so much, I did all that stuff without concern- but it's interesting how easily this info is turned over and how common it is to do so as compared to even a decade ago.

Another thing that was a little weird were the Disney photographers stationed throughout the parks.. even in spots that weren't really scenic. Their job is to snap a pic of your family and hope you'll buy some prints, or they'll just take your camera and take one of the group for you. A few times though it seemed like the photographers were scanning the crowd.. dunno- maybe they're also trying to get misc. pics for brochures or whatnot.

Anyway- the trip was great, kids had fun.. fucking hot & crowded but Disney delivers, was worth the $$.

Animal Kingdom was much better than I thought it'd be and whoever designed the environment of the Africa section in that park is brilliant.
