General / Why isn't this sort of event covered by the MSM?
« on: March 22, 2011, 08:08:22 PM »
I would put this in the "African Lion-Out" thread, but this attack goes beyond that sort of playful celebration.

General / Free "State" ?

Doesn't "State" imply borders, rules & leaders?

Is using the word "State" really accurate for the FSP?

General / For Dale & BJ, mostly - Diseased Pariah News
« on: February 02, 2011, 07:55:48 PM »
I think Dale's got the sense of humor to appreciate this, and it might give them something to talk about in their new podcast. It's an old 'zine that was put out by a few really clever guys with sharp humor, and AIDS.

Learned of this publication from a different fantastic publication: Vice Magazine.

I can do it, and this dude's got character.

Once complete, the piece could become the first public monument (installed on private property, of course) to the FSP or some such worthy project.

The Show / Sometimes..
« on: December 28, 2010, 10:25:53 PM »
..the show is so bad.

12.28.10 almost 10pm, a caller asks if the hosts are Evolutionists.

He means it in the traditional way but Ian & Sam are eager to speak of it in spiritual terms. At least Mark stayed in reality a bit on that one.

The caller's angle is that, on the assumption that the hosts do not believe in creationism, if evolution of the species is accurate then homosexuality is a natural dead end - there's nothing to be improved upon, no advantages to that homosexual being having been produced to begin with.

Ian's response?

Hairstylists. Costume designers.

That's nature's reason for homosexuality... so that humans can have hairstylists. It didn't sound like he was kidding at all.

***

That's followed up by a mini-monologue by Mark to take yet another shot at white people. Wife-beating trailer dwelling white people.

Mark.. and Ian too, always keepin' it real! If one were to ponder in an honest and non biased way (critical to unbiased thinking but apparently not essential to talk show chatter) which branch of humanity is the most useless, the conclusion probably would stem from activity (or lack thereof) in locales such as Africa.

***

But before that call, another caller had brought up the topic of homosexuality.

Ian tidily summarized that homosexual behavior is normal, because his male cat has been fooling around with another Tom. Sounds good, right?

Ian also said the gay cat attacks female cats.

So, by Ian's reasoning, it's entirely natural for men to attack women. Or more specifically, it's natural for gay men to attack women.

***

While I'm offering free critiques of the show..

A few shows back, don't know the date, a black caller phoned in to let everyone know that black people are out there in the liberty movement too, which is cool & good to know.

Ian, in his usual upbeat, eager & exciting mood that seems to fall upon him whenever a "brown person" phones in (there's definitely a pattern there, listen for it) followed that up with giddy exclamations that "the movement needs more black people! more women! more Mexicans! t'Hee! t'Haw!"

..which I thought odd, since normally Ian is anti-collectivist. Will any old "black people" do? South Americans or just Mexicans?

Stuff like that, and the repeated use of hick southern accents to portray any negative position, something all the hosts do, gives the show a notable lean to the left. It's also hypocritical, something that should be negative in anyone's mind. Not only that but there are absolutes that are overlooked frequently.. I suppose it's more convenient to gloss over technicalities like facts when it doesn't fit an agenda. Not saying the hosts have an agenda.. to me it seems like simple minded sloppiness, or familiar (read: old) attempts to get guffaws from the audience.

Nothing particualr in this bit, just thinkin..

This comes from someone who's been listening pretty regularly for 5 years. FTL is worth listening to, but after a few episodes he patterns are easy to pick up on.

The new pattern that seems to have merged for me is frequent inconsistencies... about race issues, collectivism, etc.

It also seems that Ian in particular is bored lately.

Mark (whom I prefer as a host because he at least tries to keep his emotions out of most topics, as opposed to Ian who seems to be very emotionally attached to his positions) seems eager to keep the show growing, seems truly into the whole thing. Good stuff.

..and the buffer music on Ridley's pieces.. good lawd, that's some awful sounds. Especially the one where he introduces Max Abrahms (or some name like that).. I thought that music was a lead in to a joke. Lawdy..

General / Freedom of speech, obscenity, etc.
« on: December 26, 2010, 05:25:50 PM »
This was a topic on the Christmas show, though they were discussing a pedo book.

The following obscenity case also took place in FL, back in the 90's, right around the time I moved away. Mike Diana was the first comic book artist charged and convicted with obscenity for his small self-published comic called "Boiled Angel". The style is kinda like a naughty & twisted Keith Haring.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Diana

The story is that a cop found an issue of this comic while investigating a murder. The cop was disturbed by what he saw in the comic, so much so that he decided to contact Diana and order all the issues of Diana's comic. Diana sold them to him, and then the cop turned them over to the DA who then pressed charges against Diana.

General / Help for an old, sick dog?
« on: December 23, 2010, 06:22:22 PM »
My black lab is 13 years old, been sick for about 3 weeks. Just got back from the vet who's best guess is that my dog has pneumonia. I say "best guess" because I couldn't afford the x-rays of his chest to see whether or not tumors are present. We did do the blood tests though and the results indicate infection. The vet gave a shot of antibiotics that she said would last for 10 days and may jump-start him back to feeling healthy.

Gave him a small raw steak today which he ate but then threw up about 5 minutes later. He downed a can and a half of sardines last night and drinks every now and then. Otherwise he's refused to eat anything. His nose & eyes are dripping some green goo. He's become very thin & weak over the past 5 days.

Of course I feel like a loser for not having the money to let him stay in the hospital for a couple of days, get the x-rays done, etc. but those figures totaled nearly 2 grand.. I'm stretched pretty thin as it is, especially this time of year.

Has anyone tried doing an IV drip at home on a pet before?

Any advice/experience on an old dog with pneumonia?

General / Free Keene funded by Koch Bros?

Is this true?

Who the fuck are the Koch Bros?

McLain is an occasional co-host of a libertarian radio show out of a libertarian quasi-commune located in Keene, New Hampshire. As reported in theWashington City Paper, the libertarian “Free Keene” movement where McLain makes her home is yet another libertarian project tied to the billionaire Koch brothers, the prime backers of the Tea Party campaign, through the Koch-funded Mercatus Center at George Mason University.

General / What would you say to a kid who stole from you?
« on: October 10, 2010, 11:15:57 PM »
A couple of weeks ago someone stole my yard wagon from the front yard. A neighbor had seen 4 boys running through her yard with the wagon but didn't know it was mine. So today I heard some kids making some noise down the street & went to see if they matched the description, which they did (Hispanic & black kids about 10 years old, one maybe as old as 14).

I approached with my sour-face on and said "You guys are gonna bring my wagon back... right?"

"...which wagon?"

"The yellow wagon."

"ooohhhh... that wagon. It's at my friend's house."

"Well, let's go get it."

..I didn't think to ask how far his friend's place was.

During the walk we passed a few people out in their yards. I took the opportunity to announce why I was walking with these kids through the neighborhood.. "I'm walking with these kids today to get my stolen property back.", said I, smiling. That was actually pretty fun. Wanted people to know who to look out for & didn't want to seem like a creepy guy following some kids around.

One neighbor that I announced that to, 69 years old, decided to join me and was a much faster walker than myself! Turned out to be a pretty cool old Irish guy.

The kids led us through and out of our neighborhood and into a ghetto apartment complex about a half mile away. The older fella and I were stared down pretty hard by the locals there and made a quick exit with the wagon. I had planned on speaking to the parents of the kids but... uhhh.. no.

Along the way I told the kids I hadn't called the cops (true) and that I didn't want them to get into trouble with the law since they are so young, told them that whatever I have, I mean to keep and that I don't want them coming around my place anymore, and also "that I can put up with a lot of shit but to me stealing someone else's stuff is one of the lowest things a person can do".

What would you have done differently?

General / Sad Penguin Killed By Popularity (IP discussion.. maybe?)
« on: October 08, 2010, 11:13:11 PM »
The fried pickles chat reminded me of this local drama that I thought might be an interesting discussion here..

Alright.. the drama & gossip..

The vid says that the Penguin has been around for 50 years, which is true, but I've been in town only 15-16 years or so, and have always hung out in this area of town. In the early days, the Penguin was a dirty, empty place who's main customers seemed to be stragglers from the halfway house that used to sit across the street. Other businesses nearby were junk & antique shops mostly.

No suit & tie types even came to this part of town back then because the locals spooked them I guess.

Brian & Jimmy whom I've met & seen around town for a long time bought two 5 year leases on the property & name of the place. They cleaned it up & made it not only a success but also insanely popular. The first couple of years was awesome because it was a local place frequented by local people (the halfway house was closed sometime in those early years, so those guys were displaced), rarely had to wait long for a table, food was consistently good & priced right, staff as awesome as it gets.

So it went from seedy dive to hipster dive in a few years, became moderately popular, then the show in the YouTube video above aired and these days there's a line of people waiting to get in before the doors even open. You can see it's a small place.. people waiting on tables not only line up outside, but they stand in the small areas between the tables.. butts at your elbow if you're seated and people staring at you urging you to gulp faster so they can also have the claim that they "ate at THE Penguin!!!".

Gotta be honest - the food ain't that good! It just became "the place" to be seen, which drove people like me away.

Now.. the leases are about to expire. The people who own the property and the "Penguin" trademark extended a deal to Brian & Jimmy that they didn't see as fair. I have no idea what the offer was, but part of the plan is to now make the Penguin a franchise. You can't duplicate the success that these guys achieved, maybe financially but certainly not in integrity. They made the place what it is today, and to a certain extent the whole neighborhood as well (in which real estate prices skyrocketed a few years ago). The property owners, to me, are capitalizing on the ideas and efforts of Brian, Jimmy & Greg. Their business venture there fizzled out decades ago but they were wise enough to retain the property.

Greg, the cook in the vid, also a good guy from what I know and I don't think there's any hard feelings between he Brian & Jimmy, he has sided with the property owners. Can't blame the guy, he's had a stake in the success of the place too and here's a chance for him to play a more important role in the business. I heard he will own the first Penguin franchise which will replace his current restaurant called "Pinky's". Locals are declaring they will boycott all future Penguins as well as the original - which sucks for Greg.

Now, enter The Diamond. Footsteps away from the Penguin, Brian & Jimmy are currently remodeling and preparing another vacant restaurant that's always been called The Diamond. The big, classic looking 60's or 70's sign still hangs outside and that will add to the appeal of this new spot, which will undoubtedly be successful if for no other reason than because of the two guys who will be running the place. I reckon the food will be good enough as well. Hopefully these guys will avoid another swindle & get a more secure contract, maybe they've bought the place, I dunno.. but I also hope they don't get any airtime on the Food Network! that fuckin' ruined the previous place, for me at least.

***

Legally it's clear - there was a contract. But do y'all think that makes this situation "right" ?

Does the Intellectual Property angle apply here in any way?
