General / Re: This guy is REALLY upset about Silver Circle

Wow, what a hateful person.  He definitely comes off racist in this video, and he seems to love making provably false generalizations (such as that rich, white people vote Republican).  Maybe he needs more cigarettes and scotch...I'm sure that will make him more respectable.

General / Re: Anyone else reading "The Game of Thrones"?
« on: February 06, 2013, 01:44:41 AM »
I might read the books...I enjoy the HBO series.  However, I hate getting into a series of books that hasn't been completed yet because I lose the continuity that comes with reading them all back-to-back.  I recently finished reading Avogadro and AI Apocolypse, which I'd recommend...but the series isn't finished yet so now I'm going to have to wait for the next book to come out.

In the meantime, I'm reading a book on photography and trying to get better at it myself.

What is stopping some 3 letter govt goon agency from setting up fake shops on Silk Road and sending the cops to someones house instead of the product they ordered?

In theory, you could order whatever it is you want and have it delivered to an address that doesn't belong to you.  If you have a tracking number, you know when it's going to arrive and can intercept it, etc.

Problem with that, is they would know where its really going as well. Just sit and wait a few hrs for you to show up and BLAMMO, you're screwed.

7-11's started a program where you can have stuff shipped to them for a fee. Then all you would have to look out for is a police car in the parking lot.

...and the security cameras.

The Show / Re: BITCOINS! BITCOINS!!! BITCOINS!!!!!!!!!

Bitcoin discussions seem to have died down recently, but I haven't been paying attention too closely to the show.  I only listen when I can, which is not often.

Not hot.  That said, the hoodie, framing of the shot make it hard to really tell.

I'm listening to the podcast right now - pulled the ear buds out for a while though because you guys can't stop yammering on about bitcoins.

I understand; it's a cool idea - I've even got a couple of bitcoin wallets and I trade with bitcoins from time to time. It may even be an important medium of trade in the future - I trade with mine because I want the medium to succeed, but I really don't think that it will seeing as how most bitcoin owners just sit on their bitcoins, limiting the usefulness of a currency  that has a value based on it’s perceived usefulness. Interesting strategy

Bitcoin is not an interesting topic of conversation and the stuff you have to say about it is the same crap every time. A 30-second commercial is tolerable, even if you play it a few times, but yammering on about buying them repeatedly in every show is boring and tacky. It’s tacky because your incentives for doing so are clear – there is nothing wrong with it – it’s just tacky…and as I said before: boring.

I agree on a lot of points.  Ad spots are ad spots, but it does get old and a bit lame when you hear the same stories over and over (which may or may not be paid-for ads in and of themselves).  With that said, it seems like recently the show should be called Secession Talk Live.

BitInstant made a long-term advertising commitment to FTL. I wanted to see their new offices. They wanted to cover 2 hotel rooms, but we would only let them buy one. I thought it would make for a good show. I wouldn't necessarily do this for another advertiser, but I thought it would be good programming and I think it was.

It did make for a good show, I really enjoyed that episode :)

I agree.  It was a nice change from the standard format.

The Show / Re: I liked the Edginton Post tacked on the end of the podcast
« on: September 10, 2012, 09:47:42 PM »
It's a long show. It's possible to miss that the show ended and an EP has started. I've spent 15 minutes before not realizing I was listening to an ad. Not saying they're all ads, but some are just really long ads. Then again, maybe tacking an ad to the end of the podcast that tricks a lot of people into thinking they're still listening to the show is pretty brilliant and deserves extra kudos.

The one about the CCrane Headphones was such an advert :D That didn't stop me listening the entire interview though lol, although I doubt there is any cans on the market that could beat the value for money of my Sony MDR-XB700 (perhaps maybe V-Moda Crossfade LP?).

Anyway, I digress, the best Edgington Post episode was the one where Mark debated that guy who wouldn't shut up about the immorality of voting. Mark was completely right on this issue in my view, but his opponent wouldn't give up.

Monoprice.com sells house brand headphones now.  The "DJ Style" ones are very, very good for the price.

Oh, and the third location where I ended up going was a Wal-Mart.  I can confirm that they did not check my ID at any time, though I did have to fill that information out on the form.  I paid in cash and that was it.

General / BitInstant: Not Always Instant
« on: September 10, 2012, 09:44:32 PM »
I wanted to let people know that over the weekend I decided to use BitInstant for the first time, and I had a not-altogether-positive experience.  I did get the bitcoins I ordered eventually, but it took over 24 hours, and I had to contact BitInstant support which was unavailable via phone and IRC at all.

This isn't BitInstant's fault, but I also found that the first MoneyGram location they gave me didn't have MoneyGram at all (at least that's what they claimed).  I then went to a second MoneyGram location and the service was down.  I ended up having to go to a third location in order to actually get my money over to them, so that was a hassle and pretty annoying even prior to the delay in processing my order on BitInstant's side (they say it was a problem at Mt.Gox).

I don't want to trash BitInstant, because I think they are delivering a positive service to the community, but they did not live up to the reputation which FTL has built up for them.  On the BitcoinTalk forums I also found a number of other people who posted problems similar to mine, so it's not just a one-time occurrence.  Anyway, be careful if you're relying on BitInstant for quick service/fulfillment.

Did I miss some drama?

I think we all did.  I have no idea what this is about.

I doubt Mark will tell you how much they paid beyond food, travel, and lodging expenses.  That would give away too much information about FTL's advertising costs to potential advertisers.  One of my clients pays 5x more than one of my company's other clients for the same services.  It would not be to our benefit for our clients to know our fees.
