General / Re: Do you get ANGRY at government?
« on: September 23, 2010, 09:55:47 AM »
Yes, I do. I can't watch the news, it's too infuriating. And the stories about the public schools that my wife brings home from work...Jesus.

There's a kid who can't get to school on time (by 20 minutes or so) because his (single) mom works the night shift and he lives half a mile too close to the school to be bused. So, every day he's late, he racks up another day of in-school suspension. In a week he'll be transferred to alternative school.

They will bus him to alternative school.

The Looxcie Bluetooth camcorder/headset is the closest I've seen to what you describe. Four hours of automatic recording at 15 fps 480320. 30 second clips. Instant upload button.

Or just massive inflation and "we're doing all we can to help the seniors!" handwringing.

I imagined as a kid some farts coming out like blowing a bubble, with a semi-opaque pearlescent brown sheen to them.

Holy crap me too.

Odd, me too. Apparently that's the intuitive way children imagine farts.

yeah but what if you eat it.  That's why we need government.  If not for their prescription process people would simply buy this burn creme and eat it.  Thanks government!

Shit, sometimes I've come close with athlete's foot cream next to the toothpaste. MOMMA GOVERNMENT PROTECT ME!

No, I have an office assigned to me now that happens (I thought) to be all-male, for which I have a key. My advisor emailed her and said "can Yixil be moved to this other office for (various good reasons)" and she said "NO!" because I would be sharing it with two women.

Ah.  Yes, that's ridiculous. Maybe you can go over her head?  Tell her boss that her stupid policy is preventing the office assignments from being arranged according to the wishes of the faculty?  Or better yet, get your advisor to do it?

Yeah, my advisor is out of town today but I'm going to ask him to push her on it. Honestly, I'd have a discrimination claim if I wanted to - preventing me from moving to an open seat which would facilitate my progress since I'd be better able to take part in group discussions based solely on my sex is pretty clearly discriminatory. I'm not going to use the state, but it's a dumb-assed policy for many reasons.

My brother-in-law is a doctor and prescribes himself antibiotics whenever he's sick, much to the distress of my (also a doctor) sister. So just limiting the ability to prescribe antibiotics to people who should know better doesn't do much good.

I guess. We concluded it must be an arbitrary rule set by the bureaucrat in charge of these things. She lends herself to such assumptions by being totally unnecessarily gruff and angry-seeming.

In grad school (or at least at mine), grad students get desks in offices, usually three or four to an office. My office is on another floor from the rest of my advisor's students and the labs I work in, so he asked to move me to the empty spot in the office now occupied by his other two students, who both happen to be women. When I went to talk to the bureaucrats about getting me the key so I could move my shit, I was told "There's a reason that's a girls only office".

What the fuck? Everyone's an adult by a good margin. I asked the current occupants of the office and they had no idea, and said that there was a man with a desk in there less than two years ago. Fucking stupid.

I believe this to be true.

Why do you need to work for somebody? BonerJoe seems to do alright by himself buying stuff cheap and selling it online, and I doubt you'd be infringing on his territory by doing that in Canada.
