General / Some douchebag who feels bad about reselling books
« on: October 08, 2010, 09:34:49 AM »
Link. I can't comprehend this guy's attitude. He feels bad that he makes money getting books from places they're not wanted to places they are? Really?

In grad school (or at least at mine), grad students get desks in offices, usually three or four to an office. My office is on another floor from the rest of my advisor's students and the labs I work in, so he asked to move me to the empty spot in the office now occupied by his other two students, who both happen to be women. When I went to talk to the bureaucrats about getting me the key so I could move my shit, I was told "There's a reason that's a girls only office".

What the fuck? Everyone's an adult by a good margin. I asked the current occupants of the office and they had no idea, and said that there was a man with a desk in there less than two years ago. Fucking stupid.

Latiana Walton went through most of her labor at Stroger Hospital with an arm and leg chained to her bed, she remembers.

As contractions surged through her body, she could not move or change position to relieve the pain. A Cook County correctional officer repeatedly refused to remove the restraints, she said, even when a doctor objected, saying that he was unable to administer an epidural.

"I actually said to the guard, 'Where am I going?' I'm crying. I'm in pain," recalled Walton, 26. "'I'm not going to get up and run out of the hospital.'"

General / Paula LIVES
« on: July 23, 2010, 09:48:25 AM »
I was listening to a semi-crap morning show the other day (Walton and Johnson, I think it's on more than just in Houston) and a woman called in saying that "We've just got some information that" bla bla bla about truckers striking or something like that, which somehow all related to the Mexicans. I was thinking about how odd that was today when I realized that that had to have been Paula. Sounded just like her, included the "we've just got some information", etc. So, she's still alive.

General / A personal intellectual property problem

So, last night, I couldn't sleep for shit, so I sketched up an idea I had that I believe could result in an elegant solution to some problems with solar energy. Whatever. Problem is, I'm a grad student at Rice University, which has the following rule:
Quote
In line with federal regulations and Rice’s IP Policy, new inventions must be disclosed to the Office of Technology Transfer for review. If you are unsure that your idea qualifies as an invention or want more information on how to decide when to disclose, you may request an evaluation by emailing our office at (email).

Said Office of Technology Transfer then markets any ideas I might come up with to industry, and hopefully I get a cut if it works out. I'm forbidden from taking this idea to market myself, and I'm also forbidden from deciding not to patent it and try to make money by putting it out there first. So, is there no libertarian way out of this situation?

A reasonable question.

The Polling Pit / How much sleep do you need a night?
« on: February 27, 2007, 01:53:23 AM »
I'm sitting here wondering this as I'm up late not really accomplishing anything. I usually need to average out around 7, but as long as I average out individual nights can vary wildly.
