"enthusiastically dumb, endorsing a ferocious breed of ignorance that can only be described as militant."

Quote
"Fuck you, man," says Violent J. "Shut the fuck up."

"Did you anticipate this kind of reaction?" I ask them.

"No," sighs Violent J. "I figured most people would say, 'Wow, I didn't know Insane Clown Posse could be deep like that.' But instead it's, 'ICP said a giraffe is a miracle. Ha ha ha! What a bunch of idiots.'" He pauses, then adds defiantly, "A giraffe is a fucking miracle. It has a dinosaur-like neck. It's yellow. Yeah, technically an elephant is not a miracle. Technically. They've been here for hundreds of years…"

"Thousands," murmurs Shaggy.

Only if it's causing some kind of physical harm. Otherwise it's just like they paint their house a bad color, which can also be very annoying. It sounds like they are just bothering you, which is not aggression.

I believe that keeping people awake for sustained periods by playing loud music is considered torture.  You grossly underestimate the amount of damage that "bothering" someone can do.  Sights outside of one's house can be avoided; sounds cannot-- not completely, even if you wore earplugs 24 hours a day which no one should have to do.

The quickest way to kill any interest in a story is to give it to infowars/prison planet.

How about this, then: Baby Snatching: It's Hilarious When We Just Don't Like Their Kind.  The revisions and comments are pretty interesting.

Well, people in the south believe that ALL tea should be sweet - therefore they have come up with this abomination of the English language.  In its natural state, tea is not "sweetened".  Not sure which side you're taking.

Indeed.  If you order iced tea in a lot of Southern places they will bring you sweet by default, but usually they have regular as well.  Which is good, because sweet tea is disgusting to me.

Sounds like the majority of that complaint is with the food, which isn't the waiter's fault.   I'd leave a bigger tip than that.

Holy crap, there's a Five Guys within about a 7 minute drive from me.  I didn't know.

An In-and-Out Burger is supposed to move in soon further south, as well as an Elevation Burger.  My boyfriend's excited about the former being from California, and I'm excited about the latter because they apparently use only grass-fed beef for the burgers and cook their fries in olive oil.  I'm curious about how that compares.

Burger Street is a good local chain....I usually go there because they have good quality and tater tots.  I prefer tater tots to fries by far.

The biggest problem is when you have to admit that no, there is no moral obligation to help others. I myself don't believe in positive moral standards, I don't think an ethical system can determine which actions must be done, only what must not be done.

So you don't think there's any sense in which a person who helps others can be considered more morally good than someone who doesn't?

I'm having a conversation with someone who acknowledges that this is not a matter of a private service acting, but he thinks it is a matter of the government acting like a private service-- and see, this is what happens!  Fighting house fires shouldn't be optional for the government like providing services is optional for private companies!

I tried to point out that there's no reason for a private company to just refuse to provide a service it's perfectly capable of providing if the customer is willing to pay enough for it.  Nope, not good enough.  I tried pointing out that there are volunteer fire services all over the place, and they don't have a habit of refusing to put out anyone's fires either.  Nope, not good enough.  The government should never allow people to destroy their lives while it stands by if it has the ability to prevent that from happening by forcibly collecting a tax beforehand, apparently.

I pointed out that maybe this guy would rather his house burn down than spend the rest of his life in prison for tax evasion.   No comprehension there.

Not sure what else to say.

I never go out to eat alone without a book.....otherwise I'd be bored to tears.

In fact, there's a book I need to read, so it will probably be read accompanying a couple of lunches next week at a nearby pub.  Fish and chips + beer + book - distractions = excellent reading experience.

That's the drawback to In-n-Out, too.  I can't stand fries that aren't crispy on the outside.

Can't you order then well done?

So could we settle at ugly for the chick with the pink hair?

Nope. I think she's cute.

Agree.  Slightly mannish face or not, still well above average.  Lindsey's very judgmental.

Blondie is not ugly.

Blondie = band.  Debbie Harry = person.

Since you didn't mention it, I guess you're okay?  Hope so, and yes it's good that the kids weren't in the car.  I hope also that the insurance hassle is....not so much of a hassle.

The only time I've witnessed a car accident that I wasn't involved in was driving down an icy highway during a blizzard and the car behind us slid off the road...we pulled over to see if they needed anything, but they and their car were fine and drove right on.  I'd like to think that I'd pull over to help any time if I thought that it would be useful and it wouldn't be dangerous for me to do so.  If a few people had already pulled over I probably wouldn't, especially if I hadn't gotten a good view of what happened and so wouldn't be a decent witness.

Street cameras do apparently have a use.  Until cars come standard with dashboard cams (which I wouldn't mandate, but sure would be nice) they can serve a pretty good purpose in terms of providing evidence.

I don't know about the "white boy" thing.  I'd probably react similarly-- "Why are you calling me that?  Don't call me that."

ETA:  Actually something very similar to what you describe happened to me when I was in high school, except the guy who hit me on the passenger side claimed that-- wait for it-- the light was blue.  I don't know exactly what a blue stoplight indicates that you should do....apparently crash into a petrified girl trying to drive through an intersection with a green light.

Fried pickles are gooood.

This man speaks truth.  If you ever find yourself in a place (almost certainly in the South) where they're on the appetizer menu.....do it.  DO IT.
