Just finished "Hellhound On His Trail" by Hampton Sides, its about James Earl Ray and MLK. Damn good read. I'm half way through "The Sirius Mystery" by Robert Temple, its the second, updated edition. Very interesting. Waiting next is "Wired For War" by P. W. Singer and its about the evolution of robotics used in 21st century war. Too damn hot to do anything else but sit in the AC, drink a little and read.

The very best book I have ever read and used is "Learn Electronics Through Troubleshooting" by Wayne Lemons. I bought my edition in 1971 and I still refer to it. It was a Howard W. Sams publication sold through (back then) reputable electronic stores and Radio Shack. I must admit I haven't checked online to see if its still available.

Two other reference books I use, especially at work, are "Pocket Ref" 3rd edition, by Thomas J. Glover. I buy my copies online from Enco Tools, use-enco.com, and give them as Christmas presents to my co-workers. Also another very excellent reference is "Handyman In Your Pocket" by Richard A. Young and Thomas J. Glover.

Go to Amazon and search for electronic reference books and I guarantee you will find something suitable.

Where do you go.  Please don't say New Hampshire.

New Hampshire is too damn cold for me. I've thought seriously for sometime about taking back Cuba. Transforming it to its former glory - Casinos, tourism, CIGARS! Its warm, balmy and in the Carribean. We'd have to set up a new republic, most of the current citizens speak english. I'd have no taxes levied on anything. The casinos and tourism would have to be state ran and the profits would be used to run the government and reinvested back into tourism. Much logistics would have to be worked out, but I believe it could be done. Thoughts?

50 cal. ammo cans to put it in. As long as they are pristine (most are) they will keep most anything you put in them dry and bug proof. MRE's are good to have, also when the days hunting doesn't go so well. One book I have is the US Army Special Forces Medical Handbook, ST 31-91B (probably updated even more, now). Also assume there will be no more batteries and obtain an AM/FM SW radio that has a hand cranked generator. If you have to have some electricity, get a small generator that is currently gas powered and "engineer" it to run off alcohol, the kind you can make out of corn squeezin's. Get a case of 3 in 1 oil to keep guns lubed, a case of synthetic oil for the generators crankcase (won't go bad for a long time), a weapons cleaning kit and 2 gallons of Hoppes #9 and 2 gallons of WD40. Mix the Hoppes and WD40 half and half-makes and excellent bore cleaner and powder solvent. If you have the money, a cartridge and a shotshell reloader with all the powder, bullets and die you might need. A CB radio would be good also if the SHTF sho-nuff.

I'd find a Swedish Mauser in 6.5mm. I dealt guns for many years and this was the most accurate WWII bolt action I had ever fired. I could consistently put bullets through the same holes with open sights at 100 yds. Much better than the Swedish in 7mm or Argentine and sometimes I wondered how the Germans could hit anything with the 8mm (7.92). The sniper must of found a good Moisin Nagant.

We also had a volunteer group that flew for the British during the Battle of Britain. They flew P-40's and Spitfires and did pretty well.

Amazing! I turned on the 'puter and first thing I read is this blog about rental property! My better half was at ours all this morning getting it sprayed for roaches from our last set of renters. They got us for two months rent before the wheels of justice got to spinnining Got them evicted and now we got some more. They just moved in and for some reason pulled the refrigerator out and busted the ice maker hose. I'm on my way in a bit to repair that. Thankfully Lowes is about 4 miles from it. Its always something breaking or burning out. I wish sometimes it was the double-wide
The strangest call was several years back when I had to go and dispatch an armadillo digging up the back deck foundation. Never had seen one up close and in person. I threw it in the field next door and I don't believe the buzzards ever touched it.

First, what is the animal that you want to harvest (thats kill in PC terms). I guess since being raised around outdoorsmen for 50 years, might I suggest that you might want to look into archery. To me that is real hunting. Compound bows cost less than rifles and arrows are reusable if you don't lose them. My son even fishes with archery tackle. Give it a look-see. Imitation General with Glen Ford and Red Buttons, and Catch 22 - wasn't near as good as the book, though.
