Hamas passed a stupid nanny state law prohibiting women from smoking "hubbly bubbly" (shisha) in public. Some Gazan women engage in civil disobedience. BBC interviewed Jihad, a veiled woman in her twenties, smoking outside a cafe.

Listen to the audio. She gives a perfect Libertarian explaination.

I can't remember, and I'm in a pinch. Is there info online about the campaign or the candidate or anything? I'd do the googling myself, but I need the name.

This is allegedly Furkan Dogan, 19 year old American citizen, but I wouldn't be surprised if they misidentified him. After all... American lives are more valuable that Turkish ones.

General / So... John Dennis won the primary

So, John Dennis won the primary to face Nancy Pelosi in November. I have to say I like him. I worked with him on the Ron Paul Campaign in San Francisco, and at a Campaign for Liberty event he even said he had an anarcho capitalist on staff. Although I didn't vote for him, but only because I didn't vote.

The adds against him were hilarious. Party republicans described his as "Left of Pelosi" because he was anti drug war and didn't believe in interventionist wars.

General / Deleted by avshae

Now that I have correctly called out Avsahe as a Mossad agent let us see how quickly he deletes this post.

If you want to get deleted fast then please do use derogatory language, cheap shots, or post something that contributes absolutely nothing to the topic discussed.

I'm glad you acknowledge that "Mossad" is derogatory language.

See, now I get it. I was confused why you'd created a second thread when we already had a thread on the same topic, but now it's clear that it's because your just such a power hungry control freak you can't stand to have a conversation without the ability to delete the opposition.

Go ahead and delete it

The Freedom Flotilla was a six-vessel aid fleet bringing food, medicine, medical equipment, reconstruction materials, and children’s toys to Gaza, in defiance of Israel’s blockade which has been starving the Palestinian population since 2007. The fleet was populated by hundreds of peace activists from over 50 countries of diverse creeds, including dozens of reporters, 12 doctors, and 16 parliament members. Other passengers include Nobel Peace Prize winner Maired Corrigan Maguire of Northern Ireland.

In the predawn the fleet was surrounded by Israeli warships in international waters. Hundreds of soldiers descended from helicopters and violently seized the ships. Initial reports said that the soldiers came in shooting tear gas and live rounds, although Netanyahu has alleged the activists attacked them with clubs and kitchen knives first. I’m not sure how you attack a helicopter with a club… the Israelis must have illegally boarded first. Accounts from the convoy were that Israeli forces continued to fire after they had surrendered. In either case, live video feeds aboard the ships broadcast on Turkish TV, Al Jazeera and now You Tube have been described by many as a “Massacre.”

General / Safety Laws that don't work
« on: May 24, 2010, 01:38:19 PM »
I often hear Mark say on the show, whenever seat belts or helmets come up, that studies have shown that they actually endanger people. He'll often say that if you want people to drive safe you should install a knife pointing at their chest in the steering wheel.

I find this to be true from my own experience. I don't wear a helmet because it limits my peripheral vision, which is extremely important on a bike. I don't wear a seat belt because I find it uncomfortable. The first time I got a ticket I started wearing the belt around my left shoulder, so it would look like I was wearing it from outside, but it doesn't cross my chest or waist. Instead I drive safer and have never been in an accident.

My wife freaked out when she learned this about me, and demanded that I began wearing it. My driving changed immediately. I don't think this was because of a false sense of security. I think I literally do not feel the speed and momentum of the vehicle the same way when I'm strapped in. I took turns faster, changed lanes more abruptly and with shorter notice, and ran more yellow lights, because I don't receive the same signals of motion in my body. I nearly spun out my vehicle on a turn I had taken many times before. It seemed like a reasonable speed, but I believe if I'd had these internal signals, as I always had before, I would have taken it slower. So, I went back to driving without a seat belt.

Does anyone know where I can find those studies that Mark is always referencing? Everything I've found online says that seat belts save lives, but 9 times out of 10 the research is done by the government. Marks reasoning is consistent with my personal experience. But I'd like to see the numbers.

Law Professor Confesses ‘I'm a criminal and so are you'

Lately, I've been telling people that I'm a criminal. This shocks most people, since I don't "look like" one. I'm a fairly clean-cut, light-skinned black woman with fancy degrees from Vanderbilt University and Stanford Law School. I'm a law professor and I once clerked for a U.S. Supreme Court Justice -- not the sort of thing you'd expect a criminal to do. ~Michelle Alexander

Mark, Read this. She's standing up for you.

General / unintended positive consequences
« on: May 17, 2010, 01:53:48 PM »
I hear from many liberty minded people say they support open immigration, but not until we've ended the welfare system which distorts the incentives for immigration. Sounds reasonable right? They are against the welfare system, and the immigration bureaucracy. They just have an idea about what order they should be abolished.

That sounds a little bit like this:

I advocate the abolishing of slavery, but not until we've abolished the subsidized railroad system which distorts the incentives for freed slaves to relocate. They are against slavery, and the subsidized railroad system. They just have an idea what order they should be abolished. Still sound reasonable?

I want to propose a slightly different approach.

Most liberty minded people accept that coercion results in unintended negative consequences. The Drug War raises drug prices resulting in criminal enterprise thus exacerbating the problem. Foreign intervention increases resentment resulting in blow back, thus exacerbating the problem. But we should also apply this principle in reverse. Abolishing coercion results in similar unintended positive consequences.

Abolishing the welfare system would cause a market correction which makes open immigration more tenable. I agree.
Abolishing the immigration bureaucracy would cause incredible strain on the welfare system, sending a clear market signal that the system itself is untenable.

This is just one of many possible unintended positive consequences. But I think it's important to consider this principle when discussing any liberty issue. Abolishing coercion, on any issue, subjects the State the ever increasing market signals, which will inevitably result in positive consequences. The immediate consequences may seem negative, but these are not the result of abolishing the coercion, but the necessary market correction as we return to liberty.
