General / Re: Racism
« on: August 08, 2011, 11:35:08 PM »
"Race" does not exist. It is an unscientific concept invented by a bunch of proto-Commie sociologists who lacked a good theory to explain economic and social differences between people who had different skin colors and bone structures.

To talk of significant genetic differences between "races" effecting differing levels of intelligence, athletic ability, intellect, and the like is fallacious, because there is just as much variation between members of the same race as there is between members of different races; and also because there are no sharp lines distinguishing the so-called "races".

It can be fair to make a few presumptions based on the physical appearance or cultural origin of a person, but it is not okay to make assumptions (where a presumption is only  a convenient working hypothesis, known likely to be proven false by additional knowledge, whereas an assumption is a belief held without regard to evidence whatsoever). And generalizations are always wrong, and also inconvenient because even if they're "mostly true" you always have to revise them later on. I think it's best not to take such a position in the first place and refrain from making judgments until you actually know something about the case.

On the other hand, I'm with those in this thread who object to the political correctness of some liberty people towards the issue. I do worry about the potential for a community to ostracize others over an opinion on which one does not intend to act. E.g., if someone has been deeply indoctrinated to hate black people, but despite that has no intent to do harm to a black person, then ostracizing them will accomplish nothing but to fuel their hatred. People don't learn without being around other people who are different from them. This hair-trigger ostracism reaction that I see threatening to emerge in the liberty community will only serve to compartmentalize problems, and will not provide any real solutions.

I understand that FTL and the FSP want to distance themselves from any possibility of being accused of racism or other forms of bigotry, but you don't need to shout down anyone who says anything that could possibly, in the broadest of interpretations be considered bigotry to do that. All you need to do is disagree.

It could have been a very well-aged Cuban from a while ago. It was the soil in Cuba, as well as the seeds, that made Cuban tobacco so special. The Commies sucked all the life out of the soil through agricultural mismanagement, though, so Cuban-grown tobacco isn't anything to brag about anymore. Dominican-grown tobacco from Cuban seed is excellent, but I think that true Cuban cigars are a thing of the past.

In any case, I have had some Dominican Cuban-seed cigars and anything by Rocky Patel, who buys most of their tobacco from Honduran and U.S. growers, beats them hands down, in my opinion. These days it's more about the preparation of the leaf and the construction of the cigar than anything else since so many growers have gotten their hands on Cuban seeds.

There are still some outstanding cigars on which to spoil yourself, though. Patel makes a few of them. Fuente Fuente Opus X is another one. Or for a really, really good Dominican/Cuban there's the Fonseca Cubano Limitado. Partagas also does some great things with Cuban seed.

I haven't, mostly because I live in town and have nosy neighbors. But if I ever have access to some land I'm going to try. It will probably have to be Connecticut tobacco to grow here in Western PA, which isn't my favorite, but I've had some good cigars made from it.

That's about as often as I smoke a pipe or cigar, but I smoke a couple Nat Shermans a week.

I agree about the mouth aftermath, though I've found a that putting honey and cinnamon in very light saltwater helps take care of that. Gargle half and drink the rest.

I listen mostly to podcasts, but when I do listen to the radio it's usually Glenn Beck. Not because I agree with him much; it's just that his show is the only interesting thing in his time slot.

I'm going outside now to smoke a Nat Sherman Oval. It's an unfiltered, hand-rolled cigarettello.

Seems like tobacco is quickly going out of fashion. All the nic users are switching to e-cigs, and that's great for them. To hell with those gluesticks they call "cigarettes" these days. But what about those of us who actually enjoy fine tobacco - cigars, pipes, all natural tobacco - for its own sake? I feel like I'm a minority within a minority.

So, here's a thread for talking about fine tobacco. Post your favorites, your reviews, your recommendations.

P.S. Anyone who thinks that "tobacco tastes like mud" just hasn't tried the good stuff. If the best cigar you've ever had was a Dutch Masters or La Finca, you don't know what a cigar is. ;)

If a system fails to address one single instance of abuse, then that system is flawed, and it needs to be changed. If the system does not allow itself to be changed, then the whole thing is rotten and needs to be gotten rid of entirely. And the system called "the police" fails to address abuse constantly.

You can't blame it on "a few bad apples" when the barrel has a corrupting influence on its contents.

Also... "listeners of this program". I don't know anybody who listens of Free Talk Live.

I know that a lot of people listen TO it, however.

If the "founders" had really cared about liberty, they would never have given the state the power to make laws. The Constitution was a total betrayal of the principles of the Revolution and a massive coup for the political class, who were finding their privilege threatened by the new lack of central authority. The Bill of Rights was just the last gasp of the revolutionary spirit.

You're right that it was originally constructed to refer to the suboptimal employment of unowned resources, but you could look at the concept as having two applications: one economic, the other ethical. In ethical terms, the tragedy of the commons aptly describes a situation in which it is unclear who has the right to control a resource.

This is why I'm an agorist. I say quietly circumvent the state until confrontation with it becomes unavoidable, and then decide whether to be civilly disobedient or not. Why go willingly to the government's altar of human sacrifice if it is possible just to ignore the bastards?

Free Staters can kiss my ass.  No one deserves my trust.

Good attitude. Anyone who learns your real name - kill them. And make sure you only have sex with bind prostitutes so they won't be able to identify you. The Man is unbelievably resourceful. His agents are everywhere, even in your coffee mugs.

V For Vendetta - for the first time, actually. It was better than I expected.

Unless you count the MST3K presentation of "Sidehackers", which sucked so bad that even the commentary didn't help.
