General / Towel Day 2011 (May 25, 2011)
« on: May 23, 2011, 03:00:19 AM »
Only 2 more days until Towel Day 2011. Are you ready???

In case you're not quite sure how to celebrate this year:

WikiHow: Celebrate Towel Day

And in case you're wondering why a towel is so important to need it's own holiday:
(Copied from Wikipedia)

“ A towel, it says, is about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have. Partly it has great practical value. You can wrap it around you for warmth as you bound across the cold moons of Jaglan Beta; you can lie on it on the brilliant marble-sanded beaches of Santraginus V, inhaling the heady sea vapors; you can sleep under it beneath the stars which shine so redly on the desert world of Kakrafoon; use it to sail a miniraft down the slow heavy River Moth; wet it for use in hand-to-hand-combat; wrap it round your head to ward off noxious fumes or avoid the gaze of the Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal (such a mind-bogglingly stupid animal, it assumes that if you can't see it, it can't see you); you can wave your towel in emergencies as a distress signal, and of course dry yourself off with it if it still seems to be clean enough.

More importantly, a towel has immense psychological value. For some reason, if a strag (strag: non-hitch hiker) discovers that a hitch hiker has his towel with him, he will automatically assume that he is also in possession of a toothbrush, face flannel, soap, tin of biscuits, flask, compass, map, ball of string, gnat spray, wet weather gear, space suit etc., etc. Furthermore, the strag will then happily lend the hitch hiker any of these or a dozen other items that the hitch hiker might accidentally have "lost". What the strag will think is that any man who can hitch the length and breadth of the galaxy, rough it, slum it, struggle against terrible odds, win through, and still knows where his towel is, is clearly a man to be reckoned with.

Hence a phrase that has passed into hitchhiking slang, as in "Hey, you sass that hoopy Ford Prefect? There's a frood who really knows where his towel is." (Sass: know, be aware of, meet, have sex with; hoopy: really together guy; frood: really amazingly together guy.)”

— Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Most importantly you can watch the old mini series on Netflix with awesome 80s special effects.

General / What to do about Lindsay Lohan?
« on: July 08, 2010, 01:11:20 AM »

First of all, I believe without a doubt she is completely nuts.

So...
She's going to jail, but now her sentence is reduced. I know they say crowded jails etc. which whatever, I'm sure it happens with common folks  too we just don't hear about it because they aren't newsworthy. Regardless, I don't think a stay in jail is really going to help her in any way, well except she tends to like girls.

So because a part of me gets mad because she's it seems she's being treated differently because she's famous and I also don't want people to pay for her to sit in jail at all either I feel a little torn on the matter. *Yes I know this may seem like a silly topic, but I still feel it's relevant in my quest to understand liberty damn it!*

I want opinions.

What would happen if she lived in a non government controlled state?  I promise I'm seriously curious.
1) Crazy
3) Famous
3) Possibly a hazard to people around her

I posted the picture just because it makes me laugh.

General / What kind of motorcycle should I get?
« on: June 14, 2010, 11:33:52 PM »
I've decided I'm getting bike. I've never actually driven one, been on the back of one enough to know that I love them.  I've done some research and I think the 250r Ninja is the way to go, and a lot of people seem to think so. It's something that I could probably keep for a while or outgrow and be able to resell relatively quickly.  I like the idea of a sportier bike then a cruiser, but really just want to start on something that's not going to kill me.

I also saw a bike I don't know much about nor could find much info on them- Lifan GS... it's Chinese and I found an '08 with 3K miles on it for 1250.  It's worth a look at it since it's about 2 grand less than I'd pay for a Ninja of the same year and miles. Lifan info

I know my best bet would be to start with a motorcycle safety course, but that aside... I'm going to buy a first bike what should it be?

General / AT&T Just killed unlimited wireless data plans

Unlimited, all-you-can-eat wireless data was a beautiful thing for Apple devices on AT&T, delivering streams of Pandora, YouTube videos, a million tweets, and hundreds of webpages without worry. And now it's dead.

AT&T's new, completely restructured mobile data plans for both iPhones and iPads have officially launched the era of pay-per-byte data, which we've known was coming. We just hoped it would take a little longer. It's the anti-Christmas.

AT&T is likely just the first, since carriers rarely do anything alone (like when everybody launched unlimited voice calling in lockstep), and Verizon's CTO has rumbled that plans with "as much data as you can consume is the big issue that has to change." And so it is.

Gizmodo article

But this yahoo article says most don't use that much and it's not a big deal, and will save some people money.

I've looked at my data usage and I don't consider myself different from most Iphone users. I don't constantly watch YouTube or anything, and am hooked up to wifi a good chunk of the time, but use right over 2 gigs every month. The plan they offer is $25.00 for 2g which I guess is great for some people, because it saves them $5.00 but it means there's more you'd have to keep an eye on.
There seems to be a lot of tech savvy people around here, and are probably smart phone users as well.  I want to know if my usage a common amount,  or am I angry only because I'm a higher user than most? Or should think at&t is being a money hungry hartlet because they think they're special because they have apple exclusivity?
