I believe that Ian and Mark wisely spend the amp dollars whether it's for a business trip, ads or something else. As long as I like this show, I will be glad to support it. I don't care about the details as where my money goes.

The Polling Pit / Re: Do you find body hair unattractive?
« on: May 30, 2007, 08:09:30 PM »
As I can see here, and have heard from other people elsewhere, majority of people doesn't think hairy women are attractive. I'm wondering how much our reaction is result of the of fashion, market and conformity. Hair is natural, so why are we so grossed out of it?

P.S. Why most of you say "shave legs". A lot of women do not shave! We use wax, lotions or other products. Shaving legs makes the hair stronger.

Lindsey,
I wish you post more often longer comments like the one a few posts above (and for that one +1). They tend to be more interesting than short posts.

Maybe Shrine FAQ can help you understand why Ian started the Shrine of Female listeners
http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=369.0

But here is it's purpose:

Much of "traditional" talk radio doesn't have much of an amount of female listeners. On Free Talk Live, we're proud of our female listeners, and simply want to show them off to Program Directors, and other listeners. As you may know, female callers come first on Free Talk Live.

I've also heard, probably on the show, that the Shrine is used for advertisment purposes (whatever that means).

Personally, the Shrine doesn't have any importance to me, and saying that it serves to show off women, it's pretty silly. It reminds me of a rich old guy, who wants to show off his young (probably blond) wife :P I wonder why there is no Shrine of Senior Listeners or of Black Listeners. I also disagree that female callers come first. But, as John Shaw said, "They have the shrine. They want the shrine. It's their shrine." If you don't appreciate that part of FTL, you may simply accept it, because there are other good and more important things about FTL.

What's funny to me is the validation of a shriner (a sign with FTL on it). How does that prove that a woman is really a listener? I seriously doubt all shriners listen to FTL.

However, I don't believe that women who post photos necessarily have low self-esteem.

Gordee is Americanized version of my first name. Actually, it's Gordie or Gordy, but I like two letters "e".
Hmm... three versions, all pronounced the same. Silly English language eh :P

The Polling Pit / Re: Government or Private Education?
« on: March 06, 2007, 12:34:15 AM »
The kids are currently in (Govt) charter schools, but we're struggling with what to do as the schools become less suited to their growing brains. We've done private, church affiliated school. Hard to reconcile creationism with a little boy's dreams of studying stars & dinosaur bones. We're considering homeschooling, but that leads to tons of questions about how much freedom to give them in choosing studies outside the math & grammar fundamentals.

Joy.

I don't know if you attended the Education Panel at the Liberty Forum. They discussed homeschooling, its benefits and limits. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to stay during the entire presentation, but what I've heard surprised me and it's related to it's limits - since the state still holds the education monopoly, homeschooling parents have to "obide" certain requirements and have their children take standardized tests every year to make sure that they have reached some kind of educational level.

Perhaps, a good way to learn more about homeschooling, if you haven't so far, is to contact panelists - here is more info:

http://freestateproject.org/libertyforum/2007/educationpanel

I also talked briefly to Wayne, FTL co-host, who is homeschooling his children. You may try to contact him to get some additional info.

Interesting subject.

Growing up in a communist country (in Europe), I didn't have a choice but to go to a government school (no existence of private schools), which translates to many years of listening (no dialog possible) to socialistic doctrine whose supporters didn't accept any opposite views and deliberately violated and broke the slightest form of human individualism.

I developed love towards arts and literature in elementary school, and pretty much didn't understand and wasn't paying attention to continuous indoctrinations. But in high school and university I started to pay attention and became quite rebellious and independent. Also, things in society started to change - the war broke out (yep!), after which came, so called, democracy. While some professors weren't as stiff as those in elementary and high school, and not only loved students who knew how to think, but also immensely supported two-way communication, others remained dedicated to their old way of teaching where individualism and different opinions weren't welcomed.

Although changes in society somewhat shaped my political and philosphical views and formed my independence, I mostly drew my knowledge from books and rare people whose opinions I respected. I became an opposite result of what commie goverment wanted to achieve - an individual who thinks.

"Person" discussed here is being developed at The Technical University in Lausanne, Switzerland. Researchers have created an artificial brain, called "Blue Brain", that currently has about 10 000 computer chips that act like real nerve cells. The goal for the next year is to build a much bigger thinking computer with one million nerve cells. Furthermore, by 2015 researchers hope to complete their primary goal - a replication of the entire human brain, for which 100 billion cells have to be engineered.

The Polling Pit / Re: Why do foreigners hate the US?
« on: February 07, 2007, 04:00:59 AM »
My experience is that foreigners don't hate us (people of America), but that they have aversion towards US government. Rightfully so. This government has been constantly giving itself role of the world's police that "brings" peace in nations that are "incapable" of doing so by themselves. Sometimes, if needed, invading other countries. Lovely! It's nothing wrong with disliking a powerfull group of people that shakes foundation of the entire world. However, I know that same people do like American life-style, culture, wealth, opportunity and chance.

One thousand years ago, we were meddling in their religion.
Where was US one thousand years ago?

As for money and power, yes - the rest of the world fears the United States.  Our country is virtually the only world superpower left.
What's superpower(ful) in comparison to power(ful)? I believe that the only power US has left over other countries it's military power, and that's what the rest of the world fears. However, its rank in other areas is less than powerful (more people in prison, per capita, than in any other country; death penalty; freedom of press; and all issues we constantly discuss on bbs)
