General / Re: Can you help us test our site's new Reddit integration?
« on: July 26, 2013, 10:56:46 AM »
Nothing I've submitted since the Reddit switch has shown up for voting. I don't understand the errors that I get - telling me I've done something too many times. I tried posting a story yesterday and gave up after 20 minutes - I'm sure someone else will post it eventually anyway.

The Reddit submissions are more convenient for viewing and it look better.

Not an amazing improvement but it's nice...not thrilling, but nice.

Pictures or it didn't happen. In lieu of pictures, I'll accept referencing an episode and time.

I imagine you're talking about Mark trying to explain that the political spectrum is rather broad and that a politician landing closer to liberty on that spectrum is preferable to one landing further away. This is pretty simple and I’m sure Ian understands it, but he turns it into an opportunity to grand-stand by interrupting and talking over others as he tries to goad anyone into saying something positive about Rand Paul so he can climb up on his little principle soap box and brag about how perfectly principled he is. I think Ian knows that he can get Mark to raise his voice if he plays dumb long enough and that it plays well with the audience – audiences tend to stay tuned in for conflict – if you want to hear people agreeing with one another, there’s NPR for that.

I love them both – they put on a great show, it’s informative, entertaining and only occasionally preachy.

The Show / Re: BITCOINS! BITCOINS!!! BITCOINS!!!!!!!!!
« on: March 13, 2013, 10:17:45 AM »
I was listening to the show from 11 March 2013 in which Mark states that Bitcoin and Litecoin are the exact same technology and therefore equally hackable - this is untrue and here's a little blurb from github which explains why;

The purpose of Litecoin is to function as silver to Bitcoin's gold, in the sense of being a relatively less valuable coin that is easier to obtain and transact with. The properties that make Litecoin fit to accomplish this objective can be summarized as follows:

Transactions are 4 times faster than with Bitcoin, in exchange for somewhat weaker security guarantees.
CPU mining means that the barriers to entry into the Litecoin mining market are cheap relative to Bitcoin mining.
The total amount of litecoins is 4 times higher than the total amount of bitcoins.

From https://github.com/litecoin-project/litecoin/wiki/Comparison-between-Bitcoin-and-Litecoin 13 March 2013

Ultimately, the bitcoin is Mark & Ian's favorite investment - the commercials remind me of those secret stock tip emails. As I've said - I have bitcoins & I trade with them occasionally, but I don't find them to be particularly useful.

Both bitcoin and litecoin are "hackable" to varying degrees, depending on your understanding of what "hacking" is. Hacking doesn't mean that someone breaks into the bitcoin system and steals coins. Hacking of bitcoin might be accomplished by exploiting an observed flaw in the system (I don't currently know of any) or re-purposing an existing feature of the software or transaction process in such a way as to alter the way the system works or prevent it or some feature of it from functioning properly or within normal parameters - these are often very simple and extremely devastating hacks because the system or process must be changed in order to recover from it. I don't know of any Hackers who have put forth any significant effort in testing bitcoin - it would be like taking down the monetary system of Second Life or Eve Online - sure you'd piss some people off, but what would be the point? I don't doubt that the bitcoin system will eventually be razed to the ground - but I don't want to see that happen because I like alternative currencies.

It still makes for boring radio & I still change the channel whenever Mark, Ian or one of the other hosts start yammering on about bitcoin.

Given how long it's been, I don't have a specific answer. Someone reported a post to ask a tech support question. That's not what reporting a post is for. It caused an email to go out to a whole list of people.

That's fine. I'm reporting this post to you...right now: a post exists...you're reading it...consider it reported.

Please don't report a post to get support. Most of the people who get an email for that cannot help you.

What? Are you addressing Ian or me? How does one "report a post?" and what support is at issue here? Who gets an email for what, and who are they helping? Perhaps we need to bump the crypto - I have no idea what you're trying to say.

That's the November 11, 2012 show...a Sunday show...I heard Stephanie's voice and almost crashed the car...I don't want to hear Stephanie's voice. Honestly - for what I pay you guys, I'd think you could get this crap right 100% of the time!

Just so's ya know.

They make money with the ads. That's why we get to hear the show for free. If you don't want to hear about bitcoins, buy some ad time on the show and play somethings else.

That's a little silly - if I wanted to prevent bitcoins from ever reaching my ears; I could stop listening to the show. Instead - I would like to make the show better (as I see it); if people feel like a bitcoin commercial is more interesting to listen to than an open-lines issues-oriented talk show, the show will become that over time and the listeners will be happy. If listeners find it tiresome to hear the same uninteresting facts and opinions about bitcoins in nearly every show, that may affect listenership as well and the show will adapt or perish (I believe the show will continue). Perhaps my way of looking at things is incorrect, but my intent is to provide market feedback, and that feedback is that bitcoins = boring talk radio – I’m happy I have heard about them – I have some & I trade with them, but droning on about them is boring. I want the show to continue, so I want it to be profitable and that’s why I shop at Amazon frequently and I use the FTL link so FTL gets a portion of the profits – I also buy from many of FTL’s advertisers, not necessarily because the advertisers are the greatest purveyors of their respective wares, but because I want advertising with FTL to be effective and worthwhile, and these are the little things I can to contribute to a show that I really enjoy. If I am wrong – I believe I will eventually understand this and my heart will change, but for now; bitcoin talk = dull, boring sleepy time.

Props to Ian for indirectly referencing this thread in Monday’s (03 December 2012) show.  I never said “infomercial” and haven’t seen it elsewhere in the BBS in relation to Bitcoins, so that must have come from conversations Ian and Mark have had – I wonder who said “infomercial” first?

(I found the infomercial comment):

How much did BitInstant pay for this infomercial?

I hope it was not only lodging and travel.

They prolly won't see this post. Call in.

I'll never call in about this, or any other topic - I listen to the show for entertainment and I find it enlightening from time to time as well, but I don't call talk shows - it's just not my thing.

I'll include "Mark Edge" in this reply so that Mark will find it when he goes ego surfing.  You totally rock Mark!

With all the complaints about file size with the new higher bitrate, I think we'll keep 'em separated.

Now I feel bad about complaining - but it is really awesome that Ian was willing to respond to market feedback. I am very thankful that the size of the podcast is being kept to an accessible size - the quality has always been fantastic.

As for the Edgington posts - I found them easier at the end of the podcasts. I download my shows from the "Go to this episode's page" link on the main FTL page and the Edgington posts aren't linked in that way - I will have to change my way of getting the show to see where to grab the posts, but I haven't bothered yet because I'm lazy and resistant to change.

The Show / BITCOINS! BITCOINS!!! BITCOINS!!!!!!!!!
« on: November 21, 2012, 10:17:10 AM »
I'm listening to the podcast right now - pulled the ear buds out for a while though because you guys can't stop yammering on about bitcoins.

I understand; it's a cool idea - I've even got a couple of bitcoin wallets and I trade with bitcoins from time to time. It may even be an important medium of trade in the future - I trade with mine because I want the medium to succeed, but I really don't think that it will seeing as how most bitcoin owners just sit on their bitcoins, limiting the usefulness of a currency  that has a value based on it’s perceived usefulness. Interesting strategy

Bitcoin is not an interesting topic of conversation and the stuff you have to say about it is the same crap every time. A 30-second commercial is tolerable, even if you play it a few times, but yammering on about buying them repeatedly in every show is boring and tacky. It’s tacky because your incentives for doing so are clear – there is nothing wrong with it – it’s just tacky…and as I said before: boring.

I want to listen on KU-band - it's probably the best option available to me in my area unless the local talker station gets a lot cooler. I'd like to feed a little pirate radio station too - well, something on the "legal" end of the "pirate" spectrum. I have been planning for about a year now to get the KU-band setup and to set up a small transceiver, but it's not an expense I can readily bear and there's been no end to the emergency expenses popping up this past year.

I submit show prep, vote, download MP3s, comment on podcasts and post on the BBS from time to time as well. I primarily visit the site because it generally has lots of news stories relevant to my interests, so it's like a drudge report for liberty minded folks. I also look through the advertisements on the right side of the page when I am on the market for something, just to see if you've got someone advertising with you that could provide the good or service I'm looking for.

The Show / Re: Less Stephanie, Please
« on: July 07, 2012, 11:28:01 PM »
I've decided to stop complaining about Stephanie because it is a waste of energy and there is too much negativity in my life as it is.

Mark feels like she makes a desirable impact on the show...he is wrong, but it's his show to do with as he pleases, so as long as nobody is forcing me to listen to it; why bother complaining? My future silence on the topic of Stephanie Murphy should not be interpreted as a tacit endorsement - I turn off the podcast when hear her voice, even when it's just a commercial - I've heard enough of her idiotic dribble to last 6 lifetimes and I will not willingly subject myself to her ever again.

The Show / Re: Mark and Ian are back....with a vengance!

I am of the belief that apart we are mediocre talk-show hosts (me because I am not that skilled as a host and not funny without a foil. Ian because he is too crazy for primetime), but together we are very compelling and interesting. Does anyone else find this true/

I agree completely.    Your two personalities work well together.   You are the pragmatist, and Ian is the idealist.    Both are valid and necessary ways of looking at things.       I wouldn't say that the friction between you two makes the show entertaining... but it is a part of the show that helps makes it what it is.

The show is definitely better when you're both on.   The Sunday shows that you do with Stephanie have a vastly different "feel" to them.     Ian's Monday shows feel more like "Free Talk Live", but there's still a noticeable difference.

Mark and Ian together are a lot of fun, they've got a unique dynamic, but from time to time I suspect the disagreements are exaggerated in order to entice listeners with verbal fisticuffs. For example; when Mark explains that he recognizes the incentives in a given situation and therefore understands why that situation ultimately came to pass, Ian will often accuse Mark of advocating for or defending some aspect of it - but Ian cannot possibly be so dense that he does not understand Mark's normally salient points nor Mark so unskilled at communication as to be unable to provide adequate clarification. Perhaps I'm completely wrong about this, but don't force the argument for the sake of ratings unless you're also willing to fake-laugh and puke-talk as well.

The show is definitely better when both Mark and Ian are present. I don't listen to the Sunday show at all and the Monday co-host will determine whether or not I listen for long - It's not so interesting to listen to someone agree with Ian for 2 hours.

This was not intended to be a dig at Mark or Ian or any of the co-hosts - I appreciate what you do and admire you for doing it.
