General / Blah Blah Blah, Something
« on: January 03, 2011, 01:23:02 PM »
I had an idea the other day to get more people listen to the show, and post on the forum from it.

The basic premise is to start a new thread with a link to a specific show, and invite other people diametrically opposed to the positions expressed  to debate about it.

This can backfire, or win others over, or do both. I am willing do do the legwork, but wont till I get others perspective on this.

Thoughts?

General / Is It Art?
« on: December 23, 2010, 12:23:14 AM »
I recently marked the end of an experiment where I listened to nothing but classical music for several weeks. The goal was to see if I could develop a taste for classical music with enough exposure. I couldn't.

So, there might or might not be an "objective good" with music, or I don't have an ear for it or whatever. I don't know.

What I do know is that I have a lot of exposure to classical literature, and I can tell when something is "good" literature, or "bad" according to most established tastes.

So, is taste subjective, or objective?

General / The True Price of Air Travel
« on: December 21, 2010, 11:58:44 PM »

We all know that having the government sticking their hand into the cookie jar makes air travel costs not reflect reality. One thing I realized is that the frequent bailouts, government money for free, and subsidized safety cause the price of tickets to be unnaturally low.

The poor subsidize air travel for the rich and middle class, and without this system in place, air travel in America would be totally different. It would end up like an inverse Laffer curve as ticket prices going up would place travel out of the affordability of many Americans, causing a second ripple of price hikes.

What are your thoughts?

The Rubber Room - Not Safe for Work / Lets Pretend to be Leftists!

Hey guise, I have an idea. Lets promote a racist agenda, and totally insult everyone who disagrees with us for being racist, and become condescending to every group of people who is not within our group!

Well call it affirmative action!

General / Bravery
« on: November 14, 2010, 01:32:33 AM »
What do you think are the less mentioned examples of brave acts?

Are your parents heroes?

Is a person who jumps into a new lifestyle in a country where they don't speak the language braver than the soldier at war?

Discuss.

General / Stupidest Example of Intrusive Government
« on: September 14, 2010, 03:18:04 AM »
A woman I know burned herself the other day on the oven. She didn't think it was a big deal, but I suggested putting silvadine (silver sulfadiazine) burn cream on the afflicted area. When I went home, and checked my medicine cabinet, I saw that my bottle of it was horribly out of date. I called a friend of mine who is a nurse, and asked if it needed a prescription. It did.

I lost my shit.

Seriously, what the fuck? What the fuck? I want some statist apologists on here to explain to me why they think a person shouldn't be able to heal their own burns. This is one of the most retarded laws ever. Its not like there is some kind of black market for this going around, and it sure as hell can't be used for any psychoactive effects, so I don't know what the hell this is about. Why do I need some doctors permission to get this when I know whats wrong?

What the fuck?

General / Deconstructing The Welfare-Warfare State
« on: September 14, 2010, 02:59:15 AM »
Assuming one day, it could happen, and it does within the parameters of a democratic vote where a slight majority of voters agree to Libertarian principles, how would you go about deconstructing the overbearing Nanny State we live in today? Not wanting to antagonize swing voters, and using previous successes to propel further cuts into wasteful spending is good, but what goes first? Last?

Discuss.

General / What To Do?
« on: September 12, 2010, 08:49:01 PM »
How do you handle the situation where your Libertarian beliefs will ultimately compromise your Libertarian beliefs?

I ask this because of the number of illegal immigrants in America. As much as I would prefer open borders, I realize that given the current situation, the influx of existing, and incoming illegal immigrants will vote into power politicians more authoritarians. So, having this belief comes at the expense of itself, and will only result in a larger state.

I would understand two good ways of answering this issue. The first would be to say that ends don't justify means blah blah blah, you can't force people in or out, therefore, you have to hold of this, even if it means the inevitable result will not be one that you like. The second is, depending on your view, either pragmatic, or ethically dubious that you can compromise on a belief that will preserve the system of beliefs that you hold.

How would you answer, and what do you think?

General / First Book
« on: September 04, 2010, 10:38:00 PM »
One of the new students I have this year is this one kid with heavy dyslexia. He is 15, and can't read. The kid is motivated to work hard though, and the situation looks good, as he has a new program to learn from designed by a team of psychologists.

So, it looks as if he will be able to read within a year, and I want to suggest something to be his first book. Something mind-blowing, amazing, a book that could change your childhood. It just has to not be above middle-school level.

Any suggestions?
