General / Bad News Guys
« on: January 12, 2012, 12:44:58 AM »
You know how we pulled out of Iraq and everything recently? Well, a lot of the things the military took out were things they didn't want so much, but didn't want to leave behind.

This is relevant because there's this obscure system about how the military auctions off tons of stuff they want to get rid of, and state governments get first pick. Remember, this is a decade of crap they had. I've seen pics of cases of spent brass they shipped back over here to sell. Well, one of the things they're trying to get rid of are their up-armored Humvees.

They're gonna get bought up by a bunch of podunk SWAT teams. Bad news guys, the army is the police now, and they can bust down doors more easily now.

General / The Diogenes The Cynic Principle
« on: December 02, 2011, 02:02:40 AM »
The ancient philosopher Diogenes The Cynic used to say that every man is within a fingers breadth of going insane. It took me a lot of thought, but I think I now understand this statement.

Every person experiences challenges in their life to the extent that they are capable of advancing through them. A person who solves their financial problems will be left with problems of how to invest. An addict will struggle with that issue because it grows to the extant of their ability to control it.

Its the Peter Principle but in the form of all of our lives.

General / The Suicide Thread
« on: November 24, 2011, 06:32:35 AM »
Its a taboo subject in our culture, and treated in the most unhealthy way possible.

People largely view anyone wanting to commit suicide as crazy, and cannot conceive of a situation where they have a legitimate case for wanting to end their own life.

I think that there are a lot of legitimate reasons for ending ones own life that don't necessitate intervention. I have always thought that I would rather be dead than quadriplegic, or locked-in.

Talk, talk.

Turns out drinking a small amount of antifreeze before a drug test can make the test get fucked up, and inconclusive.

Post your trees, house, what you want, etc.

If you celebrate Hannukah, or Kwanza (yeah right) go ahead and put that down in here as well.

http://losangeles.cbslocal.com/2011/10/06/sheriffs-deputy-quits-after-he-said-he-was-forced-to-beat-mentally-ill-inmate/

Some guy goes on the job and within a week, he quits because he doesn't want to be forced to beat inmates. Causes an explosion of criticism at the Los Angeles Sheriffs.

Its always nice to see people maintain their humanity because its easier to go with the flow.

And hello to all our new commentators. Nice to see you're no longer lurking, and posting now.

General / Value of the Dollar
« on: September 28, 2011, 02:04:31 AM »
Everyone complains about how paper money is worthless, and they're right. One thing people overlook is how coinage is still largely made of copper and nickel, two valuable elements.

A rush on coinage would hurt the feds quite a lot, it would look.

An interesting t6hing was reported on the news tonight. A few generations of corruption in Vernon, CA has a group of people calling for the city itself to be dis-incorporated.

Doesn't make it look like the parasites will be arrested, but less government is always good, right?

General / The Mature Bible Criticism Thread
« on: August 15, 2011, 08:00:01 PM »
A recent news article came out that I wanted to share with everyone.

http://news.yahoo.com/jerusalem-scholars-trace-bibles-evolution-092932128.html

If all the facts, and assertions in it are true, it would challenge a lot of dogma and deeply held beliefs.

So, this thread is a venue to post whatever on bible beliefs, codes, proofs, documentary hypothesis, or whatever else you want.

Just a few ground rules tho:

Be respectful.

Don't be a douche

When referencing, cite which Bible you're talking about

If you post just because you hate religion, or you have issues, or you're fucking immature, your post will be deleted.

I'll start off with a discovery I made in reading on wikipedia about the Torah, versus the Samaritan Bible show that when they differ, the Samaritan bible was more likely to agree with the Dead Sea Scrolls.

General / Question for Athiests Part II
« on: August 01, 2011, 12:12:43 PM »
Is there any situation where you can defend any position other than materialism (philosophy of the mind) as an atheist?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Materialism

If a person hold that there is no spiritual world, then I see no alternative besides this position.

This is not the subject for the thread, however. What I want to know is how you view the onset of death.
From a few articles I've read recently in (I think) Scientific American) and a few other magazines about people with locked-in syndrome. Some with similar serious physical ailments that prevented them from having any form of consciousness who woke up years later reported their time without consciousness was like sleep.

Your thoughts?

Meet Joe Son.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Son

His primary contributions to society are acting in Austin Powers as "Random-Task", going 0-4 in the early years of the UFC, and a possible rape he was involved in a decade ago.

The thing is, if you read his myspace, he seems awfully proud of himself, bragging about his acting, and four losses in the UFC, including one bout where he was repeatedly punched in the balls by Keith Hackney, while displaying a frighteningly stoic composure.

Who else should be added?
