General / Government Footprint
« on: April 26, 2009, 05:41:35 PM »
We have all heard the hoopla over carbon footprints and how people all suggest we calculate our footprints, and reduce them.
Well, what about your government footprint? If we were to make a scale 1-10 of our usag, where would you fit in?
1- you only use the streets, and thats because they own them
2- you pay your taxes.....with as little money as possible
3- you voluntarily use public transportation
4- you have used government money to subsidize anything you have done, like college
5- you have called the police
6- you have used a government institution for a problem you could have solved yourself
7- you are a government supplier for goods and/or services
8- you work for the government
9- you are a bloodsucking welfare recipient
10- you pay money to politicians to get laws passed in your favor
Discuss, comment, and amend if necessary.

General / The Perpetual Philosophical Debate Thread
« on: April 26, 2009, 02:37:28 AM »
This is where we talk about philosophy itself.
The thread is not for practical debate.
First question: Is it me, or do people resort to cartesian reasoning only when they realize they are about to lose a debate and want to stonewall the last inch they would have to give up?

General / Becoming a Stormtrooper.
« on: April 24, 2009, 03:41:56 PM »
My best friend has for years expressed his desire to join the LAPD, and just last night, something in me snappped. I called him up late at night and told him that he could no longer use me as a reference because there was no way I could support that decision.
I told him that in no uncertain terms that becoming a polce officer is no different then becoming a stormtrooper for the evil empire and that he would be forced to do a lot of shitty things in his position.
We argued for an hour and at the end of it, he was shaken.
What would you have said if your friend wanted to become a stormtrooper?

I taught my students how to avoid the draft. I love how libertarian I can be in my class.

The Polling Pit / Rob AKA NHA10
« on: December 24, 2008, 11:35:05 PM »
For whatever reason, I have the image in my mind that Rob is the type of person who wears camo clothing all the time, even when he goes into the city.
But for all I know, he could be sporting a shirt with last wednesdays pizza accident.

General / Preventing communism
« on: November 03, 2008, 11:47:40 PM »
Because I work as a teacher in a private school, I can have classes on subjects of my choosing. On a day we were not planning a bid day for classes, I cancelled regular classes, and decided to have an auditoruim class for the entire school.
The subject was the problems with communism.
First we had the Rosh Yeshiva (The head of the high school seminary) talk about his experiences running a Jewish camp in the Ukaraine and the wacky stories about buying tomatoes off the black market, finding stores with lines hours long, etc.
Then I spoke about the major philosophical problems with the communist manifesto, communism. I was able to destroy it because I was a philosophy major back in college.
The next speaker was the math teacher, who was an economics major. He spoke about the problems with that focus in mind.
Any wacky ideas they might have had before are gone now.
