General / Re: The Tunisian revolt spreads to Egypt
« on: January 25, 2011, 06:39:21 PM »There should be a riot page for the riot of the week. This is gonna be a bad year for many individuals and for governments.
Ergo a good year for freedom.

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/01/armed-bystander-shot-hero-disarmed-az-shooter/
as if the url isn't bad enough:
Armed bystander almost shot hero that disarmed AZ shooter
According to Maddow, the guy who did everything right is proof positive that guns kill "heroes" that put their greasy paws all over weapons that were just used in mass murders.
What other dastardly deeds did this jackball almost commit?

The tragedy could have been even worse had an armed bystander not thought twice before shooting the hero that disarmed Jared Loughner, the alleged shooter.

Pennsylvania Rep. Robert Brady, a Democrat from Philadelphia, told CNN that he also plans to take legislative action. He will introduce a bill that would make it a crime for anyone to use language or symbols that could be seen as threatening or violent against a federal official, including a member of Congress.
You can have an A on your shirt, sure. You can have a circle, though that's pushing it. An A and a circle? That's a gitmo'in.

General / Re: Any good resources for an employee to opt out of income taxes?
« on: January 09, 2011, 01:40:17 PM »I believe he was still filing returns, which he was jailed for lying on them. I would not be filing returns anymore
Sitting here next to a tax-prep firm's compliance officer, I'm being told 7-9 exemptions is an audit trigger. Complete exemption can only be filed if the claimant's previous-year tax liability was zero, and expected to remain zero for this year. Beginning 2010, even a zero-liability cannot claim exempt if income exceeds $950 for the year (> $300 of which is classified as "unearned" - interest, dividends, etc.) and another person can claim you as a dependent.

Boing Boing (which is about the only sober news aggregation/analysis there is anymore):

I highly recommend these YouTube videos. The nutty is tangible, and there's no "did I just see that?" after taste.

On Twitter, Caitie Parker of Oro Valley, AZ is claiming to have gone to high school and college with Loughner, and adds that she's been out of touch with him since 2007. She described his persona during high school as "left wing, quite liberal. & oddly obsessed with the 2012 prophecy."
