General / Really Bad Activism - What's Your Example?
« on: August 25, 2010, 10:27:26 AM »
Although the endless debate non-communication about "this is bad activism", "no it's not" never gets old, it occurred to me there has to be a bright line somewhere.  There has to be a point at which everyone can agree, "yeah, no."

As an example, starting a thread about really bad activism and encouraging folks to give examples, thereby all-but-ensuring unwanted attention from others interested in the minds that could come up with such things, may be on the dark side of that bright line.

So, at the risk of finding some objective standard by which activism may be judged, give an example of something clearly over the bright line.

Edit: originally, I had some for sale, but I'm going to be out of town for two weeks so shipping would not be timely.  See the thread below for sources.

General / A Bad Idea
« on: July 24, 2010, 06:03:18 PM »
Title refers to starting this thread, not to my actual idea.  In before, you can show us, what have you done, everybody's a critic, blah, blah, blah.

So here's my idea.  Let's, just for argument's sake, say you take a video of an event wherein 20, 30, 40+ activists surround a cop acting like a thug/doing their job/masturbating, whatever.  I'm very interested in your video and thank you for it.  You rock!

There's a period in your video where everybody is talking all at once and due to microphone/recording/compression issues, it is impossible to hear anything other than "WARRRRGARBLE!" for that period of time.  That's cool.  I'm interested/you rock!

So here's my idea.  Replace the wargarble time with this, more intelligible placeholder:

Or, not.  I'm interested/you rock!

The Google News alert for "black market" is dominated today by this AP article:

http://www.metronews.ca/ottawa/world/article/548770--ordinary-gazans-hurt-most-by-3-year-old-border-blockade-meant-to-squeeze-hamas--page0

Quote
Legitimate businesses have been replaced by a Hamas-controlled black market economy.

Quote
The Hamas government raises 90 per cent of its revenue abroad, including aid from Iran and donations from the Muslim world.

But taxes imposed on smuggled goods — from cars to calves and cigarettes — are an important source of income. Trader Ibrahim al-Awawda says he pays 30 per cent tax on smuggled bikes that range in price from $900 to $1,100.

Fine, it was a Q&D, but if everybody gonna complain, I'll blur and still have a fracked image because I've got different depths in focus.  Jeez, it was supposed to be funny, not take a life time to do.

General / 2 Seconds or Why Producers Hate YouTube
« on: August 21, 2009, 08:21:29 AM »
Of course, YouTube users slice, dice, cut, and crop to their advantage also, but the difference between "what happened" and "what was shown" still manages to come out on occasion.  See Chris, the AR-15 wielding "racist" on MSNBC.

Two missing seconds of video, even amateurishly cut, can change everything.  Find the two missing seconds in this video:

http://www.necn.com/Boston/New-England/2009/08/13/Members-of-Free-State-Project/1250199645.html

At first I thought it was a video glitch because it was such an obvious hack job.  But then I read the accompanying story:

Quote
So why did he do it? Kostric, not surprised by the strong reaction, was pressed on that question on MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews.

"Clearly I'm not advocating violence," Kostric said. "Clearly no violence took place today."

"Well, then what are you advocating," asked Matthews.

"I'm advocating an informed society, an armed society," he responded.

That may have been his intent, but instead he seems to have sparked uproar about the responsibilities and the manners that come with gun rights.

Wouldn't "polite society" pretty much cover the admonitions of responsibilities and manners?

Ridley came up with some good advice the other day, advice he should take himself.  If you have something worth seeing, your skills as a producer probably aren't going to enhance it.  Load and code the raw video and work on your producer merit badge while it's compressing.

The narrative may not come out exactly as you want it, but it'll still be a heck of a lot better than the narrative some other guy added while you were futsing around with 1980s-style transitions and corrupting the audio tracks.
