The Show / Re: Wasn't that Alex Jones calling in to May 23rd show?
« on: March 08, 2010, 09:40:33 AM »
I don't know about the "right hand man" part, but Blood often hosted Alex's show when Alex was unavailable.. as recently as 2009.  I don't know how credible or honest Blood is, but that was very interesting to hear him speak out.  Now Mike Hanson is a guy who WAS Alex's right hand man for several years, worked with Alex, and in fact filmed much (most?) of his early videos, and he is never spoken of anymore.  I think they had a falling out as well, but I don't know the details.  I don't know what to think about all this b/c Alex does sound somewhat humble, admits his faults often, etc. but he also does seem to have a huge ego and probably a control freak.  I like him as a rabblerouser though but his schtick does get old sometimes.  Sure, the gov't lied about 9/11, but that was almost a decade ago, and they've done plenty more evil since then.

Opera kicks ass, it just doesn't have all the plugins Firefox does.  But the browser itself is amazing.

The main thing keeping me from buying one is the lack of multitasking.  Does that mean if I am using one app, like lets say pandora, i can't be checking email or twittering or reading the FTL forum or anything at the same time?  If so, that is a serious limitation.  If they can "jailbreak" there way out of that, I will buy one.

Opera is by far the fastest browser, but I still use firefox b/c of all the extensions.  Just like if I was buying a smart phone I'd have to seriously consider an iphone due to all the existing apps.

He plays a badass guitar, has a cool as shit attitude and I happen to like his voice, its kinda smooth.  Plus its a raw rock n roll style unlike the totally fake stuff that comes out nowadays.  He is 100% real.

There is a lot of hatred and vitriol by the iPad haters.  I personally think it is appealing to those who are considering a netbook or perhaps even a kindle.  Netbooks typically cost $400+ and this is the same price for Apple's superior software.  However, I think the iPad is a little more crippled than a Netbook since it runs Apple's iPhone OS instead of its regular PC operating system (Leopard or whatever).  But I still think it does basic tasks one uses a portable computer for (browse web, type stuff, check email).  If I was in the market for a netbook (and I have considered getting one, even tho I typically dislike laptops) I would strongly consider Apple's offering.  It will likely do things we can't even currently imagine.  Just look at some of the apps out there for the iphone that weren't anticipated when it was first offered as just a "cool phone".  That said, Windows 7 is pretty cool too.  First Microsoft OS I have ever paid for (XP probably deserved my money but oh well) :)

I just saw 2012 at the $1 theater, and it was the best dollar I have spent in a LONG time.  Some people like it, some hate it.  I thought it had the best special effects of any  movie I've seen yet.  And unlike most blockbuster special effects films, it had a decent plot.  It had some nice symbolism, like when the Sistene Chapel cracks and God's hand separates from man, and the Chinese play a huge part.  Also the wealthy elite are saved at the expense of the people, which is likely how it would go down.  I thoroughly enjoyed it, although it could have been edited a bit in the middle.

Cronenberg's movie existenz was really good, and I think the Matrix ripped him off for a good bit of the plot.  It stars Jude Law, I don't know why it isn't more popular or well known...

Profanity In Title is something you can search by?  hah.

Science fiction brings up issues of property rights for me.  In 2010 on planet Earth, I am pretty much sold on the idea that people should pay a certain amount of money for a piece of property, where they can then do more or less what they wish, as long as they don't harm others.  But this idea seems to fall apart when you introduce alien races and space civilizations.  A few examples:

(1) Imagine a new planet, or inhabitable moon, or some new place where no humans live.  Do property rights apply here?  There is no one to "purchase" property from, so who can say that someone owns a portion of property?  What if aliens also wish to live or use this property?  Does one group have an inherent right to use the land over the other?

(2) Imagine an advanced race that is not concerned about profit or earning money.  They have moved beyond such a system and have no concept of money.  How would one interact with them?  Say they come to Earth.  If they wish to use a portion of land, lets say even a portion that no one else is using ie open desert land in South Africa, would you charge them money for it?  What if they have no money?  Do they have no right to use land?  Do they have no right no sleep or  occupy space or live?

(3) Imagine a space station that was not built for profit use.  Should one pay fees to use such a vessel or live on it ?  To whom should these monies be paid?  What if aliens cohabited on this area.  Should they also pay? What will they pay with and to whom?

The District 9 story is interesting, although it's surprising that humans would be so short sighted.  Obviously this alien race is very advanced to possess the ships and weapons that they do.  And to treat these aliens so poorly seems like an incredibly stupid idea, just asking for annihilation (which I hope I get to witness in the sequel!).  I mean any race with that kind of technology will likely be able to locate their missing ship eventually and if the inhabitants were treated poorly then the powerful aliens will be pissed!
