The Polling Pit / Re: Demographics - Occupation?

Nothing really fits. I usually answer Finance/Investments or Professional on surveys.

The Polling Pit / Re: Changing last name because of marriage
« on: September 13, 2007, 11:06:46 AM »
The weird things about this cultural baggage is that married couples are usually closer to the wife's parents, because the women are generally closer. Many kids grow up knowing their maternal extended relatives much better than their fraternal side. So keeping your name may link you with your father's family, who you may not know well. My wife took my name in part because she didn't feel connected with her father's family. She would have felt differently about her mother's maiden name, because those are the folks she was close to. If the choice is between your father's name and your husband's, I can see why the trend continues.

Now actually, we should have matrilineal descent (take your mother's name), because we can be pretty certain about the genetic mother of a child (absent implanted eggs), but the genetic father requires blood tests. I think that would be a much better system, but I don't see how you get from here to there. I know my mother's maiden name, and her mother's, but that's as far back as I know. Plus as Mark says, many names got butchered at Ellis Island.

General / Re: Captain America is dead (for Mark)
« on: March 07, 2007, 03:07:16 PM »
The whole premise of Civil War was great: people want security instead of liberty. Superheroes need to register with the government.

**SPOILERS**

Captain America, who was working for the government, doesn't like this anti-American approach and so leads resistance to the registration act. He takes on allies who are shady and stands down when civilians are killed in the fights between superheroes. Most of the resisters are granted amnesty but not Cap, the leader. He is in handcuffs (ha!) being led to trial when he is hit by shots from 3(?) sources.

I think he will remain dead for a while. There is a big conflict between the Captain America who stands for American values, who would resist the war and the assault on our liberties, and the Captain America who fights our enemies, even when his methods are questionable. The Civil War series was a great chance to explore this, but it's not going to be resolved.

General / New Podcast award

Digg linked to a new podcast award:

http://podcastpeers.org

Right now, FTL  is not listed, and there isn't a category that really fits. It seems silly that they wouldn't have politial or talk as a category. Any other podcaster, please get them on during the nomination process.

Just noticed that three ladies have been doctored - was this at their request?

The Polling Pit / Re: The 6 types of Libertarians, which are you?
« on: February 16, 2006, 10:13:13 AM »
Minarchist, except for the nonsense about government initiating force against competition.

I'm very concerned about DROs and reputation agencies that have been suggested by anarchists. I want a society that gives me more freedom (including privacy and anonymity when needed), not less.

All libertarians agree in reducing the size of government, but instead of 6 types, there are >10 million individuals. Each has different areas where they are hesitant to go straight from huge government to no government, except for the most extreme anarchists. So there is a transition, and I suggest this transition to less government is tested on a competitive basis. Eliminate a government function in different ways and allow the marketplace to develop solutions. I think the best "first round" of this transition is devolving federal functions to the states. Some states will have just as much regulation and power, but some (NH!) should devolve even further, to the county, community, and hopefully, the individual. I suspect the freest states will have the best results, but there is concern, even from libertarians, that the populace has been so dumbed down they are not ready for 100% responsibility. A competitive system of reducing government allows the best ways of the devolution to flourish.

I may end up being an anarchist, but I don’t think it will happen to the benefit of society until all of us raised as slaves to the state die off, and new generations of our educated, responsible grandchildren take personal charge.

Ah, but it looks like you photoshopped the card in either your shrine picture or this:

And even if she's fake - it proves my point. What name do you give to an unknown beauty - why, Michelle!

The latest shriner confirms my belief that Michelle seems to be the name with the hottest girls. I don't think I've ever met a Michelle who wasn't cute. They say the first person you meet with a name provides a template that determines your expectations for later people with the same name. The first Michelle I met was a very cute dental hygenist when I was just starting to like girls (She liked my teeth! :D)

So, all you Michelle listeners - join the shrine and prove my point!
