General / Re: Gene: STOP FUCKING WHINING
« on: June 29, 2010, 05:31:36 AM »
Gene needs to stop acting like a bitch.  I used to really enjoy his calls but it seems that for the last 4 months there hasn't been a call of his that hasn't started out with some whinge or another.  Format bitching, or bitching about Ian and Mark treating some old freak harshly.

The Show / Re: Worst ads heard during FTL
« on: June 29, 2010, 05:19:31 AM »
WAIT WAIT WAIT?

So you are saying that those Nature Bee ads really were live calls, and not just pretend live calls?

Really?  Really?

My mind is blown.  After a few listens I had come to the conclusion that they were pre recorded pretend live ads.

I'm sad Mark that you lost the client.  Any cash that goes in your pocket makes my pants happy.  To be honest I skipped those ads on my podcast.  I do have a degree in Nutritional Science so colour me skeptical (or at least the wrong target audience for that product).

I'm really not bothered by the VA Loans program ads.  Maybe it's because I'm an Aussie and thus it doesn't hit close to home.  Maybe it's because I'm a filthy bureaucrat and thus already a whore to the gubmint...

I love the Family Tip ads by Nestle.  I actually find them quite cute and hell I'll drop some cash on Nestle products, particularly Ovaltine (I grew up on that shit).

The Aquasana ad I'm pretty neutral about.  I don't buy the bullshit about flouride in the water (there are different types of flouride, flouride is good for your teeth, it is not raping your mind) but the conspiracy elements of it don't make me go bananas.  I'd never buy that product so again, wrong target audience.

Tiger light ad makes me jealous.  As an Aussie, pepper spray and tasers are ridiculously illegal.  I can't carry anything for the purpose of self defence actually.  I wish I could have a Tiger Light....and a tote a sack.  I should look into that.

I still haven't gotten over that garbled ad about joining the military (it was on I guess about 6 months ago).  Has it ever been revealed what that ad was about?  It was freaky as but really compelling.

As an Aussie I guess I come into the ads pretty benign.  I figure most of the products I can't easily access and as such am not really sold by them.

General / Re: Captain America is dead (for Mark)
« on: February 12, 2010, 09:50:11 PM »
Yeah I've been discussing the issue on some Captain America and general Comic boards.

As it was first presented to me by Fox News I was pissed off but I've come to the conclusion that it is a beat up and a misunderstanding.

The current arc has the new* Captain America and the Falcon heading to Idaho to infiltrate a 'far right' extremist group called the Watchdogs.  They are an old Cap enemy and are sort of white supremacist and moralistic.  They are currently being led by 1950's** Captain America who has gone nuts.

The way Fox presented it, they were acting like the protest group were being portrayed as the Watchdogs, and that they were racists.

However if you look at the story, Sam Wilson (The Falcon) is merely pointing out that a black man from Harlem is hardly going to be able to successfully not stick out in that protest rally, let alone the Watchdogs.

It'll be interesting to see where the arc goes from here but Fox News has bullshitted it if you ask me.

Incidentally and speaking of infiltration, the Tea Party Movement is starting to suck a bit these days.  Too many immigration nuts and Palin lovers.

* The new Captain America is Bucky Barnes.  He was Steve Rogers' (original Cap) sidekick in WW2 and was originally thought killed.  He came back recently as the Winter Soldier.  After Steve was killed, Bucky took over as Cap.  Steve is back from the dead by the way but has decided to allow Bucky to continue as Captain America...at least for the moment.  Steve is a bit hesitant to put the colours back on.

** Okay this is getting a bit nerdy now.  The original run was cancelled in the 40's, brought back briefly in the 50's, and then brought back permanently in the 60's.  This was when the storyline of Cap being frozen in ice and eventually found by the Avengers was created.  So they had to retcon away the 50's Cap, and they did so by saying he was actually a replacement Captain America.  50's Cap eventually went insane.

After having caught up, I can say I like the ladies calling in. The only reason Gene is pissed is because he has been having to wait longer and longer. Thank god for the variety.

Kaylee. Rivers too young.

Well I was going to say Kaylee but you make a good point in favour of River.

Thumbs up to Dennis.  Really good stuff.

But yeah, cut that whole 'scientific method' crap.  It's just too irrational.

The Show / Re: The Cohosts need to talk more.

Gard is Number One, in fact Liberty Conspiracy is on the cusp of overtaking FreeTalkLive as my favourite Podcast.

I like Julia, she is pretty funny when she wants to be and her laughing at things is contagious.  I also find it amusing that sometimes she won't even try to be involved in the discussion.  Ian will try to bring her into the discussion and it turns out she wasn't even listening.

Nick is good and like someone said above, he may not talk that much but his comments are always golden.  Toby isn't on enough to really analyse but I don't have anything against him.

I actually really like Wayne.  He has a great voice and a great sense of humour (which makes up for Ian's complete lack of a sense of humour).

Dale and Sam I haven't really warmed up to as cohosts yet.

...How many shows has it been Gene?  One show?  Calm yourself.

It's like when the nutbars in Montana starting turning FreeTalkLive into ChemTalkLive, you grit your teeth and you get through it.

The Show / Re: Incoherent Commercial
« on: May 08, 2009, 08:21:05 AM »
Yeah the first time I heard the ad it confused the fuck out of me, like my soul had been violated.
Then I started to think it was a teaser ad, I thought today it was becoming more coherent but that could just be me getting used to the ad and starting to understand it.  I could make out most of it except the yelling part at the end which is apparently 'now I get to die in Iraq'.

Who is responsible?  What is its purpose?

The other day, instead of Mark reading copy for an ad like he usually does, he launched into 'The Road not Taken' by Robert Frost.  There was no context or commentary, he just read the poem and then immediately Ian brought up a topic as if it didn't even happen.

It's like somebody is buying ad space and filling it with lunacy to mess with us.
