If the BitCoin is truly supposed to be a currency of its own then its exchange rate with USD shouldn't matter, least of all for early adopters who want them to succeed. It's the exchange rate between bitcoins and goods that matters in that case.

Let it be known here on this day that we have found incontroverbile proof that gigolos do exist.

He's bunkering down to prepare for an alien invasion.
I remember his last show. I got the impression that he was leaving because he thought an even larger, eat-the-dog-style economic and social collapse was coming. But it was aliens all along? I guess he probably never did say exactly what was going to bring about the collapse.

For that matter, so did I.

BTW, I listened to the podcast and noticed that you brought up tentacles as early as the first hour of the show -- the "tentacles of the state". That gave me a laugh.

"Yet consultant neuro-psychiatrist Dr Sudad Jawad has worked with young people who have had strokes and has come across a similar case in his practice of a man whose sexuality changed from homosexual to heterosexual."

Looks like it swings both ways, Dale.

She keeps going after the porn and I will have to call in and set her straight. She was pushing it being full of it on kids upbringing, but dissing the porn and it is ON.
Where/when did that happen?

Shit, I hit modify instead of quote.

It may be damage, but I'm not sure it is property damage.

If you hack into my hard drive and reconfigure it......it absolutely is property damage.

But you still have the working hard drive.

What are the damages? Do I owe you a new hard drive?

The damage is whatever he lost because he didn't have use of the data on his hard drive, because it was on HIS hard drive, and you didn't have the right to fuck with it.  How obvious is that?
It is obvious if he owns the data on the hard drive.

But you can't own data, I thougt. It is not property. The data is not owned.

While it may be damage, I don't see how it is property damage if the 1's and 0's are just 'ideas', and not property.
You're failing to distinguish between concept and instance.

Does anyone else agree with Stephanie that the TSA searching afros (spelling?) is racist?

No.

Thats a ridiculous statement.

Seems to me, its kinda racist to assume blacks are the only people with afros.
I heard David Duchovny say that some people of Jewish descent have what's called an "isro" (pronounced like the "is" in "Israel").

The Show / The Santorum Google-Bomb
« on: January 14, 2012, 12:44:07 PM »
I called in a few nights ago with my misgivings about FTL hopping on the bandwagon with redefining Santorum's name. I didn't prepare for the call so afterwards I felt like I didn't really get out all the points I was trying to make. I'm having trouble organizing these thoughts so I guess I'll just throw them out in a random order:

* Rick Santorum is not the only Santorum. This google-bomb affects them all -- there is collateral damage. It's a "nuclear weapon". So I think we should disavow it on those grounds alone. Are we not against collectivization and especially collective punishments?

* Even if Rick Santorum were the only Santorum, whatever happened to that whole "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind" thing? When bin Laden, a mass-murderer, was killed, there was no celebration in the studio, in fact the killing of him was condemned. If returning like with like is wrong in that instance, why is it okay in the Santorum case?

* When I was a Democrat, I was right alongside my fellow Democrats in coming up with childish names and insults for Republicans and everything they believed in. As a voluntaryist, I look back on my behavior at the time with embarrassment. One reason why is because, at the time, I felt fully justified in name-calling because, of course, the other side was wrong.  But that's what everyone thinks! Civility is not something you save for people who agree with you.

I'm not losing any sleep over Rick Santorum's situation. I do feel sorry for him, just like I feel sorry for Scott the Bigot, but the ones I'm concerned about are the people who are jumping on this bandwagon and contributing to this atmosphere that comes inevitably with giving moral support to any act of name-calling. It's largely about my concern for what happens when a culture of incivility is allowed to fester. I've been there. I used to live right in the thick of it. It's poisonous. I don't want FTL to head down that road.

General / Re: Beating the DP Issue to Death. Someone please help me.
« on: December 17, 2011, 01:54:40 AM »
It took me several posts like this to realize you're trolling us. That's really embarrassing for me.
I can see his point. It makes sense to me. I can't really think of any way to explain it that's clearer than what he's already said, though. I guess I'll try.

Mark Edge said that people who support the death penalty are "supporting the killing of innocent people" because inevitably there will be a wrong conviction which will not be overturned in time, resulting in an innocent man getting executed. By that same logic, though, anyone who supports lifetime imprisonment could be said to support the lifetime imprisonment of innocent people because inevitably there will be a wrong conviction which will not be overturned in time before that person dies in prison.

This is not some kind of argument in favor of the death penalty or anything, it's just a specific criticism of a particular (inflammatory) thing Mark said which I've never heard any other anti-DP person say anyway.

I don't listen to Porc Therapy, but I for one enjoy Stephanie's sensitivity to gender issues when she's on FTL. Sometimes she goes overboard but that's pretty rare in my opinion, and it's no different from how other hosts go overboard sometimes about their pet issues. That sensitivity goes both ways, too -- I've heard her bring up misandry more often than anyone else does.
