I promise you. It looks nowhere as cool as you think it does...

General / My cell phone was stolen
« on: February 22, 2010, 03:38:28 PM »
It is really my fault. I obviously dropped it somewhere in public last weekend. I think it was probably Sunday. I didn't think anything of it at first. I don't even really use it since I have a Blackberry at work. I thought I must have dropped it behind the couch at home.

Finally, about Wednesday night I started to worry that I hadn't stumbled across it. It wasn't until Friday night that I pulled up the AT&T web site and checked usage. I found that from Tuesday on somebody was using it to call a number in Santa Ana, another one in Moreno Valley, one in the S.F. bay area, and one in Mexico City. Naturally I felt stupid. My procrastination cost me about $30 in usage, including data and what looks to be a song download (I don't use data on my personal phone). I immediately called AT&T and reported the phone lost/stolen.

The next morning I went to the store and had my number moved to an old Razor phone I had lying around.

Last night I was cooking dinner I got a call. I recognized the calling number as a number from the S.F. Bay area. I just answered "hello" and there was a confused guy at the other end asking who I was. I asked him who he was, since he was calling me. He stammered a little and told me he was looking for Mark. I told him "Sorry, there's no Mark here. That's probably just the guy who stole my phone. If you see him, tell him not to steal."

I don't think there is much else I can do to get revenge for my $30 in charges and the loss of my Samsung phone. But if anyone else calls for him, I may as well get the pleasure of telling the person at the other end that they are calling for a thief. I thought about calling the Mexico City number. Maybe it is his grandmother.

I hope he wasted money buying a charger for it.

Anyone have a good "stolen phone" story? Any other recommendations for having fun with the guy?

I LOL'd at this (I'm talking about the google ad about Gavin Newsom):

Can we build a successful thread just making fun of advertisements gone wrong?

The Polling Pit / Are you the biggest nerd ever?
« on: October 23, 2008, 12:43:39 AM »
Okay, here is the deal. Nominate yourself if you think you are the biggest nerd. I will follow the thread and add contestants as it goes along. You may vote for up to two. You may change your votes at any time. I'm leaving this poll open for 31 days.

You can nominate someone other than yourself, but you have to give reasons and I will have to get three mentions of that person before putting them on the list.

If you own more than three computers, you didn't kiss a girl until you were 21, you are 45 and live with your parents, if you have an opinion on what material makes the best heat sink, or if you think the dvorak keyboard is truly the best; whatever your reasons - tell us why YOU are the biggest nerd ever.

If you make suggestions on how to improve this poll then I take that as sufficient proof that you are a nominee.

The Polling Pit / Dishwasher Poll
« on: September 30, 2008, 12:49:44 AM »
Do you use an automatic dishwasher, and are you satisfied with it?

I mostly use mine as an under-counter dish strainer. It is only capable of washing dishes that have nothing on them. Furthermore, I have never owned a dishwasher that provided any value for the effort, except as a useful rack for which dishes can air dry.

General / Baby steps - slowly persuading

I have a friend who is a longtime card-carrying Republican Party member (not just a registered republican) who believes in fiscal conservatism, low taxes, blah blah blah. We were having a sort of back and forth about illegal immigration because he (like so many others) was on the wrong side of it. I think my short argument might have gotten in there somewhere, then I let it go. I left it where we agreed that the welfare spigot needs to be turned off.

I then sent him a separate message saying

Since you are a dyed in the wool Republican, and won't consider leaving the GOP, check out the Republican Liberty Caucus

His response was:

As of 2.13.08, 6:34am, I am a registered member of the RLC-CA.

Thanks for the tip.
