General / the economics of civil disobedience
« on: February 07, 2011, 09:22:15 PM »
this was recently on the show: why don't more people disobey?  me thinks it's related to the economics of the situation.  if you perform a lone act of disobedience, say, don't pay taxes, you are at risk, whereas all taxes are pooled and distributed across gov agencies.  so you risk a lot, but your act isn't felt across the system

the gov is a collective (in this way and others), and one thing that collectives do well is distribute risk.  it's the same reason people display more risky behavior when they have health insurance, and why cops get away with so much.  unfortunately, right now, i only see collective resistance as an effective reaction to this.  the pure individualist can only make it incredibly difficult for the gov to enforce their laws (for example by running for the hills

General / the constitution ain't so bad
« on: November 18, 2010, 08:55:35 PM »
... as far as libertarian gov docs go.  in the cause for freedom, it's a good rallying call for people just starting to "wake up".  the bill of rights in particular is a good talking point for people to realize their actual power - power that they've delegated (or resigned) to the gov

for example - the freedom of speech can be a good initial defence against ftl haters

just sayin'.  let the flames begin

General / #LRN vs #RFC chat
« on: November 10, 2010, 09:36:02 PM »
please consider the #RFC channel for more show and freedom focused chat (instead of porn, racism, and infatuation chat mixed in with freedom and show)

General / #RFC vs #FTL
« on: November 10, 2010, 09:21:50 PM »
if you get tired of the #FTL channel chat you can try #RFC which is more liberty focused (less porn, infatuations, racism, etc - more freedom and show oriented)

General / motor cross/stinky animal problem
« on: November 10, 2010, 04:21:47 PM »
wanted to comment on the motor cross/stinky animal problem.

first, i think we all agree that sound and smell can be an act of aggression and that the harmed parties are justified in defending themselves from that aggression

a minarchist libertarian (like myself and apparently mark) might suggest using the state to handle this conflict, but the state is not necessary.  the parties in conflict may agree to binding arbitration, a free market court, or a quick problem solving conversation between respectful adults.  the offended party might erect sound (smell) barriers instead of troubling their neighbours, or the the offending party might erect them.  they might go into a pay-share scheme where the owner of the barrier pays the lion's share, or one side donates real property and the other the barrier, etc.  again, none of this would involve the state

the key is that there are solutions that do not involve the state.  whether it's a mediation service or a chat with the neighbour is irrelevant.  what should also be considered, though, is game theory and cost/benefit.  while i don't want to get into the details, we have established that one part has been aggressed against and that they are right in using force in self defence.  since the state has the monopoly on (violent) force, asserting the rights of the party may be perceived as a threat to the state.  the state may also perceive a threat if their conflict resolution services are not used.  so the best game theory here (imo) would be to make a good faith effort at communication with the other party, if negations degrade, suggest binding mediation (unfortunately backed by the state) and should that fail - drop the relationship and steal (or destroy) their bikes (or pigs) in the dark (to avoid the state and stop the aggression)
