General / Al Jazeera

I've spent the last 24 hours watching Al Jazeera English on and off.  What a breath of fresh air.

- no terrorcrat fellating
- very, very few terrorcrat interviews (a result, no doubt, of not fellating terrorcrats)
- many, many, many interviews with people with skin in the game representing many different viewpoints
- constant attempts to confirm facts with many people on the ground
- an actual promo, "journalism without borders"

I now have an answer for people that ask, "whatever happened to journalism?"  All the journalists went to work for Al Jazeera.

as if the url isn't bad enough:

Armed bystander almost shot hero that disarmed AZ shooter
Quote
The tragedy could have been even worse had an armed bystander not thought twice before shooting the hero that disarmed Jared Loughner, the alleged shooter.

According to Maddow, the guy who did everything right is proof positive that guns kill "heroes" that put their greasy paws all over weapons that were just used in mass murders.

What other dastardly deeds did this jackball almost commit?

EDINBURG — A man told police he found his 16-year-old son in bed with a naked woman more than twice his age who he allegedly hired to have sex.

Edinburg police responded to the 100 block of East Wells Street at 3:47 a.m. Friday to a call of an act of prostitution in progress.

Police found the teenage boy's father, who said he found his son in bed with Dulce Liliana Nava Cardenas. Nava, 35, allegedly was naked and about to perform a sexual act, according to a criminal complaint.

Police learned the boy paid $150 to Nava for her to perform sexual favors, the complaint states.

After her arrest, Nava confessed to police that she accepted cash for the sexual favors and that she allowed the teen to touch her breast with his hands, the complaint states.

Nava was formally charged with indecency with a child and prostitution Friday afternoon in Edinburg Municipal Court. Bond was set at $2,000.

If convicted of indecency with a child, Nava could face up to 10 years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine. Prostitution carries a maximum penalty of 180 days in jail and up to a $2,000 fine.

Nava was released from the Hidalgo County Jail early Monday morning.

General / What's the Missing Link?
« on: November 15, 2010, 08:52:49 PM »
I've read what I can stomach of the political philosophers and, with the exception of the anarchists, I keep coming up against this formulation:

1. Humans are social animals.
2. ???
3. Government!

I know it's taboo to question the tenets of state religion, but it seems strange that the only people who try to explain #2 are the Christians (Jesus is Lord, Jesus grants authority, if you don't submit to the authority of man, you aren't submitting to the authority of Jesus).

But, I also can't believe that there isn't a good attempt, at least, at #2 beyond superior force or magic.  Specifically, what gives "the people" authority over the individual?

Can anybody point me to the philosophers who have answered that question?
