I'm here! Internet is getting set up tomorrow, so I should be back to lurking full time by then (after job-hunting all day and finishing my honeydo list that is). Anyway, I've got plenty of beer left over from the moving help party if someone (non creepers only) wants to bullshit and get me up to speed for a while.

I was drinking last night and thought it might be a good idea to check out the Ames (sp?) straw poll results on Fox News (see the drinking part...). I tuned in just as they announced that Michele Bachmann had won. Ron Paul finished just behind her (4700 to 4550 votes or summat) and the stadium was full of Paul signs and the Fox audio mix was filled with "Ron Paul, Ron Paul, Ron Paul." The reason I say all of this:
1) When asked about Ron Paul's surprising finish, the head of the Iowa Republican party started talking about Rick Perry.
2) During the analysis afterwards with Paul signs and sounds filling the TV, the commentators were predominantly discussing Rick Perry's 5th place finish.
3) They actually cut to a Rick Perry speech soon afterward, completely forgetting about everyone else.
What the fuck has Rick Perry done to be so loved by Fox News?

I clicked into the 'Listen Live' stream sometime during the day Saturday and landed in a conversation where a lady was calling FTL out on always ragging on the coppers (from the little I heard of her). Ian's response was spot on: (paraphrasing) "I'm not saying cops don't do good things; its just that when a police officer does something bad, they can't be held accountable in this system." He then goes on to say that being able to withhold payment would go a long way toward accountability. I think this is spot on and that you guys should echo this sentiment a little more loudly to temper your stance a bit. This way, the average radio listener is less likely to think you're just radical, probably-violent kooks.

The Show / Jefferson Memorial

So I went to the memorial on 4 July... Didn't see any dancing. Did go through a few checkpoints that day. None of the cops were intimidating, authoritarian, or even dicks. Only one of the 9 (5 museum, 4 monument) even stopped me for my multitool. Many of the officers were friendly, joking around and smiling, and/or professional. I even had my camera out for one or two of them. I understand Meg and others had some difficulty. I wonder why there is such a difference in our experiences. Time of day, group, demeanor? Maybe its just that I'm a sheeple?

Alright board geniuses, I've got an idea cooking in my head. Care to help me work through it?
I hear the following phrase a lot: "Governments grow. That's what they've always done." and "The founders failed. Limited government doesn't work."
The snag in my though process is this: limited government is a relatively new concept in world history. The enlightenment period provided a drastic break from the conventional, god-ordained, property-of-ruler schools of thought. The US federal system (as I understand my history) was a radically different approach that initially succeeded in many ways.
This makes me think that a government can be purposefully shrunk by design like Molyneux was describing at the beginning of the Somalia video.

It's a book about parenting. My wife's got me reading it. Complete Liberty reads it all (with critique and comment) on his podcast. So, I'm into the first chapter. Anyone read it? Thoughts, opinions, recommendations?

I just realized a side effect of the state doing a shitty (good at indoctrination?) job of educating children. You hear a lot of percentages when people discuss education quality. 84% of American kids can't read. 9 of 10 can't point out Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan on a map, blah blah blah. While some children can't read and some kids don't know geography or math, there are some that can and are. Yet, all Americans get treated as if they're equally stupid by most statists of all stripes, 'intellectuals', policy makers, and foreigners. This means that if I were looking for a job at an international firm and was competing with a Swiss guy, a Frenchman, and a Chinese immigrant, I would probably start the running dead last in consideration, all else equal.

General / Pizza: Thin, Tossed, or Pan crust?

I love deep dish or pan pizza the best personally. Though, one of the best pizza's I've ever eaten was a Chicago style thin crust "cubbie" pizza. It had pepparoni of varying sizes as well as a strange, tasty sausage on it.
