So we end up with everyone taking legal action against everyone else that uses a less efficient combustion engine?  I'm thinking that's not very efficient.

I do value the discussion so far and have read posts with new ideas.  I have a feeling the answer is somewhat fuzzy because a free market system hasn't existed for so long.  There is just no real example to examine.

What about the "free rider" problem?  Vaccinations are an example.  If enough people receive vaccinations, then a small population can choose not to vaccinate but still benefit (without cost) from those that did vaccinate.

As far as pollution, how can I prove that a factory in CA is harming me if I live in NH?

"Its also worth mentioning you don't have the qualifications to instruct kids above a certain level of education."

That's why it would be most important to teach the child to learn for themselves.  Was there anyone qualified to teach Albert Einstein about physics?  Socrates about philosophy? Mozart about music?  By the time a child reaches the age of 13/14 (8th grade), they should probably be able to search out and teach themselves on most any topic, especially in this day and age.  I have learned significantly more on my own than any school/teacher has taught me.

So, I periodically get into "discussions" with a statist in my office at work.  Periodically he brings up points for which I do not readily have an answer.  One example he trots out is market "failures."  His favorite is pollution.  In a truly free market, how would air pollution be handled?  My view is that if harm can be proved then one would have recourse because of a violation of one's right to life.  However, as air pollution can, at least theoretically, have an effect on one a great distance away, how do they prove harm and obtain recourse?

Put much simpler, how might a free market handle air pollution and other externalities?

I am listening to last night's show and Ian mentioned a book, "The Market for Liberty" supposedly available at book.freekeene.com.  I was interested in downloading the PDF of the book, but both Foxit Reader and Acrobat Reader report an error with the file.  Could this be fixed please or is there some where else I could obtain the PDF?

Thanks,
Sean

The Show / 2010-03-18 Show - Cindy Sheehan Pro-Liberty? Not so much...
« on: March 19, 2010, 08:52:52 AM »
I am listening to last night's (2010-03-18) show and heard the discussion about Cindy Sheehan.  While she may be anti-war (at least the current ones), she is definitely not pro-liberty.  I didn't think that she was but did a search and confirmed my original thought.  She is a typical lefty anti-war advocate.  I found this article that she authored, http://www.progressive.org/mag/sheehan080608.html

Direct quote: Why, in one of the wealthiest countries in the world, do some have the "privilege" of being fully insured and healthy, when health care is a basic human right, not a privilege for the elitists?

Anyone who views health care/medical care as a basic human right cannot be pro-liberty.  While her view on the current wars in the Middle East is correct, I highly doubt many of her other views include Liberty.  In my view, she is a typical anti-war statist.
