General / Re: Recycling Nazis
« on: October 15, 2009, 12:12:29 PM »
Well sure, i could burn my trash but...

That's added effort. I pay for the service of trash pickup, now they're telling me that they need me to "pitch in" and spend my time separating MY TRASH so that they can save money and in fact earn money (by selling bulk recycled materials) from my labor.

So i got a friendly notice in the mail a few weeks ago:

http://www.cranstonri.com/generalpage.php?page=4202

To sum it up - "You MUST recycle, we will NOT pick up your trash if it is put out without a recycling bin that has at least something (approved) in it."

"You must not put your trash out after 6:15 AM on the day of trash collection" (I can't think of any logical reason for this whatsoever)

"Failure to comply will result in the issuance of fines under provision blah blah blah of the City of Cranston Codified Ordinance"

Upon reading this i saw red for about 10 minutes. Many items that get put out on the curb from my house are recycled, but i I do make it a point to throw away a good amount of plastic bottles and paper because i lean toward indifferent/non-believer when it comes to recycling.

Supposedly recycling is bad for the environment and horribly inefficient/wasteful, to the point that it's actually a losing proposition to try to recycle old materials. I've heard some compelling things in this vein, but my gripe has always been much simpler.

A 20-oz bottle of coke is now $1.59, when about 2 years ago it was $0.99. Companies like Coca-Cola get discounts (vs. buying fresh materials) on buying bulk recycled materials and simply don't pass those savings along to the consumer. Things with "recycled materials" are marketed heavily and sold at a HIGHER THAN AVERAGE PRICE. It incenses me that there are dipshits who will pay $5 for a shopping bag made from recycled materials vs. $3 for one made from fresh materials. MAYBE you're helping the environment, but you're DEFINITELY enriching people who purchased materials at a CHEAPER COST. Grr.

Anyhow...i'm not the owner of the house in which i live, but really want to do some kind of civil disobedience/protest/put a bureaucrat on the spot over this. What are some ideas ?

Has anyone had a similar ordinance put on the books in their community or heard of similar things?

You can do an ignorant black man's voice as a white guy all you want, it just makes you a racist or at very best a moron.

...

If a black guy does the voice of a square white guy - it's funny!

By your rules, is it moronic for a white guy to say 2+2=5 and funny for a black guy to say 2+2=5?

By my rules, no. By society's rules sure!

Why is it? I don't know, you'll have to go ask 300,000,000 Americans why. You can do an ignorant black man's voice as a white guy all you want, it just makes you a racist or at very best a moron (in the mind of a huge majority of people). If a black guy does the voice of a square white guy - it's funny! I laugh and maybe it's just as racist but that's what seems to be tolerated in society.

Now i know FTL isn't a show to pander to the majority, but this isn't one of the things you can 'be an iconoclast' on. If i had a show to preserve i wouldn't dare hop on the air and make fun of black people with a thuggish voice.

In my personal life i do voices all the time and often they're spanish or black people, but on a one-on-one level i think it's fine when i know my audience. If a bunch of strangers were listening, it would alter my perception of what's ok to say or do. I think George just has too much free time on his hands and is looking for improprieties where their are none.

Thanks for the ideas. I think i should first master making a good point and then shutting up, that would be a good starting point =-D I think i have a tendency to passionately fire out 3 points and expect people to instantly agree with statements like "so see there's pretty much no need for government at all..." within 2 minutes' time.

« on: October 07, 2009, 10:28:12 PM »
After digesting many of the ideas of liberty over the last few months, i've naturally started to try to share the viewpoint with friends of different leanings. Has anyone found a phrase or a few phrases that will just get someone thinking, but not come across as too hardcore?

Also, what to do with someone who is adamant about disliking welfare recipients (and painting all people who receive gov't aid as minorities...) and not the government itself on the basis that 'they're all just lazy and living off our money'

I always point out that hey - the government is taking your money (by force) and giving it to these people. It's not the welfare recipients' fault that the government has decided they should have some of your money. They needed money, so they went to the office where they hand out money, and they got some of your money. You can spend your entire existence hating people who receive welfare, but it's the government who's running the show.

This arguement doesn't sway my friend who (very sadly) will from time to time use the n-word then say things like "no, there are n-words and then there are cool black people, there's a difference - i'm not saying that they're all n-words, but some of 'em are"

Hmm, i may have realized the real problem, not that my friend is hard to convert to liberty, but that he's a racist asshole.

Straight up, it's inappropriate for a white guy to make fun of blacks and do funny voices on the radio. You should know this. As far as Mark and Ian bringing up race issues, they have to make the distinction that although they're pasty white guys who live in New Hampshire, they're not the variety of whiteboy who's all "goll-ee, a black guy!". That's my take on the whole thing, and i think their 'spin' on things is outstanding.

« on: October 07, 2009, 09:40:42 PM »
Scott's never really said what he would do with all the jews if he somehow were to get his hands on them. Mark and Ian should ask THAT question, hilarity would surely ensue.

"If you're not a little bit uncomfortable with your position, it isn't radical enough. How can you be too principled? Take the most extreme position you can -- you're claiming territory you won't have to fight for later, mostly against your "allies"."
--- L. Neil Smith

Stutory Rape laws are just more arbitrary prohibitions on consensual acts.

The fact that talking about it makes people uncomfortable tells me that even if there were NO SUCH LAWS, people would still not engage in such actions widely, because it is something most people consider "antisocial".

And what about countries without such laws? Nothing. People get along just fine.

Think about it.

Sure. But follow Harry Browne's 'Silver Rule' to these views being thrown out over the airwaves and where does that take you in 5...10 years?

20,000 people in one place who all feel strongly that grown ups and kids should be able to do the horizontal bop with impunity. If society as a whole generally rejects individuals who take this stance, it certainly doesn't bode well for a whole organization that does, no matter how many other great ideas it espouses.

I read the whole thing and the OP's point is simple: FTL should not be perceived as the mouthpiece for the FSP, due to FTL advocating all sorts of weird stuff that ultimately turns off average well meaning citizens, while attracting dangerous personalities.

Exactly. Well, sort of. I'm fine with FTL being the mouthpiece for the FSP but it just needs to use better judgement when it comes to issues that could turn people away in droves. You can convert sheep to deeper thinking, but it's another thing entirely to think that you can convert a few out of every hundred people to believe that a world in which a 10 year old should legally be able to sign a porn contract is something that they should desperately want to be a part ofrunonsentance.

It's just...if i had an idea for utopia-lite within my lifetime, i think that many of my ideas would overlap with theirs but like...nowhere in that scenario does "should be able to fuck a ten year old" or "Charlie Manson needs to be able to buy hollow points" come up whatsoever. Nor do they for many people.
