Here's a basic wallpaper.  .. contribute yours

I made mine for my small screen on my laptop. . .

Um, isn't that just blind contrarianism?

Anyways, I've always used a solid-color background (black if I want to know whether my screen is dirty, white if I don't).  It actually saved memory in Windows 3.1 days, and I always have an app open full screen so who cares.  Recently though I started keeping the default wallpaper on some Linux / Solaris / etc distros I like.  Also, I really like the Windows 7 BETA wallpaper, the lone fish swimming towards the light (http://news.softpedia.com/news/The-Story-of-the-Windows-7-Beta-Fish-101857.shtml).  I can totally relate to that fish.

No, it definitely isn't.  I don't like that phrase.  No one needs it.
