Does the program work well?
It looks like it is about on par with the 'for money' programs of this sort.

GIMP sucks. Really, I'm not kidding.

I got a free copy of "Photoshop Elements" with my scanner, and have been using that ever since. Works just as well for what I do with it.

It works very well. There are some things it even does better than Photoshop. Photoshop has a lot of features that GIMP doesn't that a hardcore professional needs, but for myself, I have both installed. I use Photoshop as a matter of course, but sometimes it's actually better to pull up GIMP for certain things.

For the kind of stuff on this board, they're both on par.

I always just pirate my copies of PS.  This CS2 doesn't interest me just yet, however.  It's growing on me, though.  I use Photoshop CS now, and I feel like it is all I need for now.

I like GIMPshop. http://plasticbugs.com/index.php?p=244 It is 'The GIMP' re-mixed to mimic Photoshop almost exactally (as far as menu layouts, button placement etc.). Plus, its still free.
As a Bonus, because GIMPshop is so similar to Photoshop you can use all of the great web tutorials for PS with almost no problems!

Fascinating.
But I figured out the program good enough.
It would be good for beginners, with the tutorials and all.
I just have misgivings about someone fucking around with the source code.
It glitches enough as is.

It actually works pretty well for me. I just made a couple of  pic's for the gallery. I will be posting it in a minute or too. It only took me about an hour and this is the first time I have used it. I  haven't even used GIMP or Photoshop before so it just made sense to me to get GIMPshop. The time includes finding the Originals on the web and learning everything by trial and error.
This is really my first time using any sort of Image Editiong software so don't expect too much.

Everyone starts somewhere. I learned on a pirated version my friend gave me by just using it. Trial and error is the best way to learn.
If I had the money though.

But don't get yourself down thinking that you suck. Just do what you can, use your imagination, practice, fiddle, and eventually you should be able to do something you can like.
This is what I did anyway!
The PhotoShop contests on Fark.com are a great way to just masturbate your mind and improve skills/get ideas.
Plus it's fun, because it gives a reason to do a piece.

I'll say it again.  GIMP sucks.  Horribly.

Anybody who says that gimp works well is lying and only trying to act like they are smarter or some shit because its a linux based proggy which blows ass chunks.  All the pros use Adobe PS and PSP, you can't deny it.  Gimp users are just lame, so do yourself a favor and don't waste your time on it.

And that's my two cents.
