Title: Halloween!
Post by: Laetitia on October 21, 2011, 11:10:13 AM
Costumes, cakes, reassembly of the guillotine are all in the works around here.

Thought it might be fun to see what other folks are up to.

Granted, if you don't have kids, you probably haven't even started thinking about it yet, but that doesn't mean I won't start happily taking and using ideas from here... because I don't already spend way too much time on Pinterest, Craftster and Instructables trying to come up with something good for this year's D&D / halloween bash next Sunday.

Great cakes! I've not been on Pinterest much, but I've pinned a bunch of things I want to make.

Halloween is my holiday. I pretty much celebrate it year 'round, though, so the actual day often ends up being a let-down. (We don't have trick-or-treaters out here (no sidewalks, houses too far apart) and the house isn't all that visible from the road, so we don't decorate outside (we keep planning to).)

I was off work for a few weeks, right around the time I'd be planning for a party, so no party this year (back to work now). Next year! (Last year, my August birthday party was Halloween themed, because that was how I wanted it.)

This year, one of my friends and I are getting Halloween-pedicures as close to the holiday as our schedules will permit, and the hub and I are hoping to get to Greenfield Village this weekend.

I always have more fun with Halloween than with Christmas. Halloween is just for fun, Christmas is because it's expected.

Halloween pedicures - great idea! Greenfield Village? That's the midwest Williamsburg, isn't it? Is it colonial/pioneer or late victorian/early edwardian, to go with the beginning of the automobile industry?

Didn't know if you be going to see witches burn, or general fall festivals :)

Greenfield Village is pimp. The Henry Ford Museum is on the same lot. Giant building full of cars, planes, trains (Yes, giant loco engines indoors) and all sorts of craziness. The last time we went they had this crazy FUTURE HOME (tm) that looked like an old timey flying saucer. Actually, it was sort of like an aluminum yurt. Was fun.

The village itself has all kinds of fun goodies. They moved one of Edison's workshops piece by piece there, there's a whole are of crafts workshops, glass, smithy etc.

Lots of fun to be had.

Its just a day like any other day.

Makes perfect sense.

Giftmas is almost like that for me. (Not to derail the topic, but we've been slowly crafting our own version of the Dec. 25 holiday, since we don't celebrate for religious reasons. I'm not to the point of it being just another day, but it doesn't resemble past holidays. I wouldn't bother with T-day except that my family likes to get together, but that's got a backstory that has nothing to do with time and age.)

Well..   I left a lot unsaid.  Halloween used to be "my day", with my girlys.

Xmas is alright, 'cause it's like two days long.  XmasEve, XmasDay, and the Xmas day afternoon-night.  Theres plenty of time for everyone.

Halloween is, in total, about three hours long.  For kiddos.  If you don't hit that sweet-spot, it's just fucked.

In the years following my divorce, it got snaked off'a me, and the "other guy" took a big fat shit all over it, every fuckin year.  It caused a lot of problems and my girls not knowing what was expected of them.

A number of those years, I spent lying on my shitty little bed, in my shitty little apartments, staring at the ceiling wishing I was dead.

Those, and one or two others, were the very tippy-top worst moments of my whole entire adult life.

So, I had to either rationalize them as "just another day", or let my evil loose and drink myself into a fucking coma, and do god-knows what in my blackout.

Now that a little time has passed, its not so raw.  They're older and they go to girly parties, but I still feel a little resentment when I see all the stuff on peoples lawns.  Even typing this, I find myself taking deep breaths and rolling my eyeballs a little bit, to prevent spillage.

--

Before all that, it was fucking great.  Hilarious parties.  One time, I dressed as a "fucking scumbag".  I had a Don Johnson sport coat, smeared a bunch of vaseline in my hair, and got a cheap cigar.  My buddy was a chef.  We went door to door, he talked like the Swedish Chef, and I talked like a Jersey Goon.  If the homeowner was cool, I'd proudly proclaim when asked "I'm a fuckin Scumbag!"  It got some laughs.  It sounded a LOT like Tony Clifton, before I knew who Tony Clifton was.

That was the same year we pre-gamed at my first apartment and handed the little kids cans of vegetables for their treats.  They had their choice of the veggies, or a huge Oscar I had in a big fishtank.  After they were good and pissed, we'd give candy.

Yeah, I used to like Halloween.

I used to like Halloween too, I suppose. I used to really look forward to setting up the spooky decorations with my mom and get dressed up and so forth, but now it's just another day, sort of. I'm headed home this year to see the family, and I've been dreading it since I clicked the purchase button for the ticket. I still enjoy it more than Christianity's appropriating of the winter solstice, but I'm largely indifferent these days. (However, that's not going to stop me from getting dressed up and having beers!)

Um, no. That'd be the Henry Ford Museum, next door.

Also I saw many ages represent.

My kids love the Halloween festivities on Main Street in Concord. Most of the shops open their doors and THRONGS of kids go from shop to shop getting candy. Some shops make elaborate mazes or other fun stuff. Most adults are dressed up along with the kids. Fun times.

When I first came to Norway Halloween didn't exist.
As almost a gag, I had a party and all our friends dressed up when my now 17 year old daughter was 2. At three she got her friends to dress up and went trick or treating confusing the hell out of all the neighbors but she still got a few things (Including a whole ice cream cake). Every year more and more kids joined in. The stores have been selling pumpkins in Norway a few years now. (in 1994 no one knew what the hell I was talking about when I asked for one)
My kid tells me she always preferred Halloween to any other holiday, but I sometimes wonder if she didn't more or less start it herself. :?

We're almost past the trick-or-treating years. My older two are carving ghoulish pumpkins and inhaling pizza on Sunday with friends, but baby girl still has a year or two left on the costume/candy track. I'm going to miss it when she starts to think she's outgrown the festivities, because this is so much more fun than the other holidays. Plus, on Halloween I never have to cook giant meals for my p.i.t.a. mother-in-law, or sit down for a "nice visit".
