Yet Another Firefly Thread
« on: February 20, 2011, 09:09:13 PM »

(I'm not allowed to "necro" old threads, so, well, here we are...)

From Slashdot -- Science Channel Buys Rights To Firefly --

Quote
The Science Channel has purchased the rights to Firefly and plans to air all episodes in order and in high definition.  In addition, physicist Dr. Michio Kaku will appear to explain the theoretical science behind the show's sci-fi concepts.  There's a brief interview in the article as well with Nathan Fillion, who chimes in with his thoughts on Firefly and playing Mal.

Also, there's a fan documentary that I've missed, called Done The Impossible, now available on BitTorrent; but Browncoats still isn't.

Have to say, I am a little scared. I love Dennis Leary but just finished watching him do his latest stand up. It was hard to watch. Hope this aint like that.

In my opinion, "Ariel" was the best episode of that best show on television.  It had all the elements of high art.

Hulu.com has episodes (or did) available free of charge.

Mal wouldn't have wanted us to use Hulu and support them Fed censorship agents at the MPAA...

Use BitTorrent instead.   :D

I bought the series on DVD after seeing Serenity.  It sorta has the feel of Star Trek meets Raiders of the Last Ark, and I thought it worked.

Earth-that-was could not contain our digital pirates, there were so many.

The more pirates the better, as long as they pull their own weight (which P2P protocols like BitTorrent make unavoidable).  Pirates own the hardware and the connectivity infrastructure that they use.  (OK, current ISP's prohibit piracy, but in the free market there'd inevitably be plenty of piracy-friendly ISP's.)

Finally we are headed for a civilized society where millions of talented individuals can produce entertainment as a hobby, without a class of overpaid entertainers who derive their income through (and thus owe their loyalty to) the state!

watched Serenity, then watched 10 minutes of Firefly and thought it crap, then watched Firefly again and loved it so much that i watched every episode in a matter of a few days, then watched Serenity again and had a lot of "ahhhh, i get it moments." Quick question, though: Are tehre going to be new episodes? I mean, everyone is ten years older, Wash if fucking dead (), and they killed off the Shepard, among other things.

I suspect it's all dead, unless, perhaps he comes up with a sequel idea for the movie, since it was fairly popular.  As for TV, seems it ran its course.

I think any new episodes would be pretty bad; they would put in all things that might seem "cool", and leave out all the stuff that made the show good.

On the other hand, I would have liked to find out what the deal was with the Shepherd.  Jubal Early says that he wasn't really a shepherd.  It is hinted that he killed a guy and assumed the dead guy's name (and possibly profession?).  Every black male in the show is a kick-tail assassin/fighter of some sort.  Even in the Big Damn Movie.  My guess is that the shepherd had a Jean Valjean moment....

It would have been fun to see how the relationship between Wash and Zoe developed, too.

His backstory is explored in one of the sequel comics.
