Went on a reading kick recently:
1984- I should have read this long long ago. It really should be classified as a horror novel.
The Monkey Wrench Gang- Not impressed. I don't really like books that advocate destruction of private property in general.
Steal This Book- It's ironic how this counterculture book went up into the top-sellers list. Not a well written book, and its outdated today.
The Anarchists Cookbook- Nothing will make you lose a hand faster. Its a silly silly book.
An Introduction to the Theory of Games: Topics in Mathematics- Its a book on game theory that was written off of a series of lectures given in the University of Moscow in the 70's. Its well written, well thought out, and short enough to read in a single sitting. I would recommend it, but there don't seem to be many copies floating around.
Philosophy of Mathematics- Its frightening. If you want to preserve your ideas of Euclidean geometry, do not pick this up. If you want to see how space can have shapes, or how a triangle can have less than 180 degrees, then pick it up.
Rock, Paper, Scissors- Great pop book on the everyday workings of game theory. It reminds me of Freakonomics in how it reads.
Police for the Future- I would recommend this for any party-line bootlicking state worshiper. It reads well, and will explain why police can't do their job well. The author is a college professor, and has a bit of a condescending attitude, but backs up his shit with a good amount of info, including the Presidents Commission on Law Enforcement.
Breaking and Entering: Policewomen on Patrol- I betcha didn't know that the original policewomen in NYC carried their pistols in purses. It was written as some feminists PhD thesis. I think most PhD theses to be terrible, but this one is especially bad. She can't write, assumes too many silly things, and can't overcome her own bias well enough to not irritate the cops she goes out on patrol with enough to get them to relax their guard around her. Nothing notable in the entire thing. I'm embarrassed they published it.
Traumatic Stress in Police Officers- Gives a good introduction into the goings on of a cops head. Reader can figure out why they're so douchy after reading this.
The Art of War- Reread it, and its still one of my all time favorite books. Something died in the modern era, because nobody writes about an entire subject, like rhetoric, geometry, war, or feelings like they used to. Cicero, Euclid, Sun Tsu, and Marcus Aurelius are very dead, inasmuch as nobody reads them anymore. Its sad, because I like short books that compartmentalize entire subjects, and teach them from the esoteric, down to the brass tacks. That art form is gone.
