Cigarettes with fruit or herbal flavorings can no longer be made, imported, or sold in
the U.S. under an FDA ban that went into effect today.

The prohibition covers "cigarettes that contain characterizing flavors such as herb,
spice, or fruit flavors, including cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate, clove, strawberry, grape,
or cherry," the agency said.

Menthol cigarettes are not included in the ban, nor are flavored cigars or smokeless
tobacco.

Today was the first day the FDA could prohibit flavored cigarettes under legislation
passed in June that empowered the agency to regulate tobacco. It sent a letter to
manufacturers and distributors Sept. 14 informing them that the ban would go into
effect today.

Lawrence R. Deyton, MD, MSPH, newly hired as director of the FDA's Center for
Tobacco Products, said the ban's intent was simple: "It is to prevent our children
from initiating cigarette smoking," he said.

He cited internal tobacco-company documents suggesting that the industry has
developed flavored cigarettes to appeal to young people.

Surveys have also indicated that young teenagers believe flavorings make tobacco
products more appealing and safer.

Deyton said the agency was studying options for regulating menthol in cigarettes and
flavorings in non-cigarette tobacco products, as required by the June legislation.

The FDA has established a hotline -- 877-287-1373 -- as well as an online portal
(http://www.fda.gov/flavoredtobacco) for individuals to report potential violations of the ban.

Deyton said the FDA has alerted other agencies in government, especially Customs
and Border Protection, to aid in enforcing the ban.

I can't believe they offered a hotline to report violations. Who the fuck business is it if I do smoke a clove? Seriously I still have half a carton in my room.... I didn't know about this ban until later. Stupid.

Actually I can just go down to Tijuana and pick up a carton for myself.  PM me if you're interested in learning more.

Yeah, this news came out at least a couple weeks ago.  I'm sure some smart folks went out and spend several hundred or more on cloves and will slowly resell them.

This morning, the FDA released a new opinion stating that they believe flavored cigarette rolling papers and filters are subject to the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act’s (“FSPTCA”) ban on RYO tobacco and cigarettes with characterizing flavors that took effect on September 22, 2009.  The relevant page can be found on the FDA’s website at http://www.fda.gov/TobaccoProducts/GuidanceComplianceRegulatoryInformation/Flavo redTobacco/ucm183228.htm.

Nah.. it ain't a black thang.

The major tobacco manufacturers in the US make the menthol flavors.. they don't wanna shoot themselves in the foot.

Big Tobacco didn't prohibit the sale.  If menthol was prohibited, it would look like the Gov was targeting menthol smokers and allowing cowboy brands.  And that would cause some wicked-serious shit.  The media would go nuts immediately with the same leap-of-logic.  It'd be chaos.

When they do stuff like this, it has to be across the board.  Cigarettes, period.  They targeted a novelty, to see how the populace reacts.  If the general consensus is positive, which it probably will be, in a few years they'll use the data to support other measures.  Like, prohibition of non-filters.

This. The specialty flavors are made by smaller companies and foreigners that we import from. I read that the major cigarette makers already agreed to stop making flavored cigarettes well in advance of this decision. They were actually consulted.

Actually when I was telling a couple friends about Obama letting this ban goi into effect at the end of the month they asked if menthols would be covered, when I said NOPE everyone started laughing.  I didn't even have to say the connection out loud or even infer it heavily.
