Where I live, theres a lot of ethnic division in old towns. This traces back to the coal-mine days. Italians went to one town, Germans went to another, Irish, etc.
Anyway, the Italians made wine, and lots of it. Around here, its known as Dago Red. Some of it is very good for home brew, and some is hooch that'll knock you off your chair. Old men in baggy pants spending 50 years, growing their own grapes in the back yard learn some things, y'know?
If I were you and had a serious interest in making home-made wine, I'd spend a bunch of hours reading blogs and forums before I went into the expense of buying a kit. Because I know for a fact, those old men didn't use no stinkin' kit. You can get everything you need in a hardware store, and the bottles can be purchased at the beer store if they sell old-time returnable pop. Soda used to come in big glass bottles, you may recall.
By doing this, you'll have an actual understanding of the little parts, and what they're for. And you won't get stymied into custom parts and refill kits, you'll know each part and ingredient, and how to go get another single item in the hardware store.
I've never made wine, but I always wanted to try, kinda. What prevented me was I don't like drinking wine, and making beer seems like a pain in the balls which can go totally wrong. Good luck in your adventure.
