Windows Vista "Gadgets" To Stream FTL
« on: December 18, 2008, 07:45:31 AM »

Someone with the skills should make a Vista Sidebar Gadget that connects the user to the FTL stream and provides alerts for when it's  about to go live etc.

This would be useful because anyone can put a gadget on the Microsoft website and we could spam the reviews to give it high ratings.  There are other radio station streaming gadgets and this one might get noticed.

Good idea.  Could make an iGoogle gadget with streaming audio, too.  Lots of people see those.  Some have 50,000 users, and they have counters on how many are active.  If someone sees one with hundreds of users, it could compel them to see what the purpose is.  You can leave feedback and say "AWESOME!  GREAT GADGET!  LOVE THE SHOW, FIVE STARS!!!!"  flood the comments with positive feedback, free publicity.
Exactly.  Make an iGoogle gadget, a Mac Widget, and a Vista gadget.  Can't be that hard for someone with the skills.  I gave up programming in high school so I can't do it, but I bet even Libman could do it.

I don't really see what the attraction is to widgets/gadgets.

If you have a lot of RAM they don't impact your performance at all and some of the tools really are handy.  I just upgraded to Vista Ultimate finally along with a Phenom X4 Black Edition and 6 gigs of RAM so I just discovered these gadgets and I am diggin them.

Just browsing through them I saw a few radio station gadgets and immediately though that FTL should have one.

Yeah, they've had them in OS X for a coon's age, but I never really saw any point in them.  I've only used them for widgets that someone wrote where I didn't see a program of the same function--which has been quite rare.

I like having the Network Traffic, CPU usage (I even found one that shows a separate bar for each core)/RAM usage, and headlines right there.  I also found a little radio streaming gadget that allows me to select from something like 300 different feeds for when I'm lazy and don't feel like messing with my own media library.

... but I bet even Libman could do it.

I'd charge $150 an hour with a 4 hour guarantee.

He was just waiting to be called.  You can blame it on me for asking for a little FTL charity.

C'mon Alex. Think of it as activism. I promise to say lots of nice things about you for a week if you do it.

Why would I care what you people "say"?  I search for my name about once a week, but I have no hopes or expectations.

If you had asked me a few months ago, I'd totally do it for free, that and much more.  Now, I'm so down on FSP and FTL (which I see as inseparable) I even tried to call Ian's bluff and asked for all my past AMP money back.  I didn't think he'd do it (and needless to say he didn't), but anything that helps fund my long-term little seasteading venture would be a moral act in my view.

Including a Windows Sidebar gadget job.  I don't care if it's for Adolf Hitler Talk Live, as long as I'd get paid.

Then why bother searching?

Furthermore, it's a bit arrogant to think you're so important that you need to do a search for yourself.
