Title: Wildlife living around you...
Post by: Fred on October 28, 2011, 11:05:00 AM
I live in the Ouachita's in Arkansas, and we have lots of wild life around here.

Some I've seen are:  raccoons, possums, deer, armadillos, rabbits, squirrels, cougars, bobcats, coyotes, bears, and little ones.

What's around you?

I'd like to shoot all of those things.

I seldom drive to work without passing at least 30 deer, both whitetail and mules. Coyotes, of course. Lots of bird life, with everything from Great Blue Herons to Bald Eagles. There are swans at certain times of the year, and Canada Geese almost all the time. Once in awhile a moose.

Close by: squirrels, raccoons, possums, foxes, groundhogs, chipmunks, craptons of flying birds, wild turkeys, pheasant, deer

Neighbors try to raise turkeys, so we find domesticated turkeys in our backyard occasionally

Rumored: wolves & coyotes

Further north: black bear (sighted the next county over, so not too far, actually)

That's all I can think of, but I'm sure there's more.

Lots of pretty two legged wildlife can be found near my home.  The Platinum Blonde Beaver is my favorite specimen.

My cat kills mice and squirrels- I live in the city and would prefer to see none of those things in my house which occurs on occasion. There are rabbits too, but she's not brought one inside yet.... thank goodness.

On the news today, someone captured a bobcat a few towns over from where I live.  You just dont find those things around here normally. No idea how it got here.

Mostly squrrels, raccoons, coyotes, red fox, opossum, deer and rabbits. No hippopotomus or anything cool like that.

Once in awhile a moose.

Seen moose tracks not 50 feet from my house in Marlborough (near Keene).

I didn't see much in the way of wildlife living around me today, other than buzzards of some sort, but I sure saw an awful lot of dead wildlife on my bike ride.
I was cold, tired and fighting the wind on way up the side of a mountain, so I amused myself with a count:
2 raccoons
5 possums
2 chipmunks
2 deer, 1 of which was surrounded by 6 squabbling scavengers.
8 squirrels
Somewhere around 10 birds, was busy worrying about whether or not I'd still have all my toes at the end of the ride by the time I hit double digits.

On our run into "town" today, we passed a large group of about 20 (domestic) turkeys and 4-5 chickens. Looked like someone's gate had been left open. Turkeys are stupid; you don't want them running around in the road. One just stood in the middle of the road for a full minute, before just moving on.

Dale, I was so excited driving through NH, after I saw the Moose crossing signs, then I was torn because it was foggy and I certainly didn't want to run into an actual moose unawares (esp. you know, with the car). Ended up not seeing any.

My brain goes in odd directions looking for focus during long rides. Sometimes it's planning a menu and shopping list for the week, or finding all the colors of the rainbow, sometimes it's darker. I can listen to audiobooks, podcasts and music when I'm running, but not while I have to worry about hearing cars coming up behind me while I'm flying down a curvy 10% grade at 37 mph...

I live near a coastal bird sanctuary - Diurnal Raptors are my specialty, especially the Peregrine Falcon and the Merlin Falcon - Baddest-ass birds on the planet. When nesting the Peregrine will kill *any* bird that comes within 1/4 mile of the nest. One guy said he once saw one hit a Canadian goose head on, and took his head clean off!

From what I understand, we've got just about everything, including mountain lions, bears, coyotes, fox etc.  I've only seen the last couple, but we live about a half mile from "open space," and where I used to work there were all kinds of big wild game (deer, antelope, etc.) grazing openly.  Plenty of rattlesnakes, too.

Our cats are indoor cats, LOL.
