Why flame wars won't save the BBS long term.
« on: August 19, 2011, 05:15:40 AM »

Broken window fallacy.

People only come to look out of a morbid sense of curiosity that lasts only as long as the event, then they leave again. People also come outside to see the two drunks fighting loudly in the street. It's called rubbernecking, not participating.

A spike in traffic because of a flame war for a couple days doesn't fix what's broken any more than slapping paddles on a dead man will bring him back to life. You may get the heart started, but all you have is a shiny new 98.6 degree vegetable rather than a human being for your troubles.

The only hope for the BBS is civility, the occasional positive attitude, and talking about useful and interesting shit without fear of constant attack, and I just don't see that happening at this point.

People don't talk about interesting shit here anymore because they now have social networking sites where they can be rid of a random asshole with a single click, and if you post anything interesting about yourself or share any sort of personal feelings that can and definitely will be used against you around here. I mean, the BBS isn't youtube bad, but it might as well be, because the nasty isn't as random as youtube.

The main bummer about social networking sites is that they tend to be a one way thing. Not a lot of really long, interesting convos happen there. No 200 page epics about random silly shit or tits or Jesus or whatever.

Brasky mentioned some stuff about people doing illegal shit on the BBS. He sorta left the gun thing in my hands. Historically it barely ever comes up, and when it has, I've responded to it by basically pleading with people to not draw the ire of the relevant enforcement agencies and leave it at that. This is probably gonna remain my modus operandi. I'm saying it because no matter who you are, I wouldn't wish an ATF visit on you. Not anyone. I never break gun laws and neither should you. If ya do, I imagine that talking about it would be stupid and risky, unless you're into self abuse.

Of course if ya talk about using weapons to harm others Imma whack ya with the banhammer, just like always.

Now all ya'll fuck off I have shit to do. (He said jovially)

...Mebbe I can talk Brasky into adding "Saxon" to the word filter. Hmmm.

I grew up with a buddy, knew him pretty well.

He went to the Marines and came back out, and we had him at a corner bar one night.  And man he was wrecked.

He was just smashed, plastered.  And the whole fuckin bar turned on him.  Or at least the other half.  Not our half.

And he turns to the bunch of 'em and he goes COME ON, I'LL POUND THE TEETH OUT OF ALL A YA!

Nobody fucking understands civilized anymore.

And you know what pisses me off most of all?

Nobody asks themselves what side am I on.  (yourself, read)

I've known most of these fucks long enough to where a bond should be formed.

I feel like I'm going JUST RE - FUCKING - LAX, PLEASE.

And they're going NO!

and the left hand slams out and the right hand cocks and you're online.

You do this for several years of that, and heres the best part.

People bitch at you for sending some goofball to a timeout.

I'm not sure when I done that since my last fiasco, but it's been a while.

I donno how many people are supposed to be allowed to come at me, but my number is "ZERO"

Mark it zero.  LOL.

Chapter three.

Flame wars SAVING the BBS.  No absolutely not.  It doesn't work that way.  Controversy magnified is Jerry Springer.  This is practically Jerry Springer now.

The focus of entertainment and interaction at this age and forum should be flirty.

The fux wrong here?

Its cause people like to fight.  Maybe it's the nature of man to scrap after dark in an unmoderated truckstop shitter.  I'll take the French Onion soup, and a vodka, or something.

Did you notice nobody posted - or super-few- some vacation pix.  My friend did on another place.  Not here.

I had a few lulz about the safety of the internet here, today.  This place is totally unsafe.

I was thinking of you today John Shaw.  You're here using your name for you name, and that's John Shaw.

That takes balls.

Chapter four.

bump bump bump another one bites the dust.

Why are people so willing to clash.

This IS  Battledome.  Or battletoads, I saw ya laugh.

We've marked it as such.  We know what it is.  Its where we come to fight.

And we know who we're looking for a piece of.

Chapter five.

Be careful where you go.

I almost got took somewhere this weekend.

Imagine if it took about five hundred bucks to go somewhere.  And three people were going.  That would be about 135, and someone fix the details.

What if you were told it was about five hundred bucks, and everybody else paid basically nothing.

I think not.

If drama was suppose to save anything, then why isn't Second life the biggest thing ever? It's like drama llama central.
