Our deep fryer just broke. Again. We've gone through half a dozen in 10 years. Why can't they be made to last? And why do none of them have a removable heating element that isn't attached to the temperature control thingee for easy cleaning?

Can you list the fryers so I can avoid them.  We are currently looking into getting one.

Tfal. GE/Wal-Mart brand. Fry Daddy.

Go industrial, see if you could pick one up at auction.      A family friend did, and it's AWESOME!

GFS sells an "industrial" one for about $200. I think it's time to spend the money...

I came:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Cecilware-EL6-6lb-Commercial-Electric-Deep-Fryer-NEW_W0QQitemZ110415971773QQcmdZViewItemQQptZBI_Commercial_Fryers?hash=item19b54e05bd&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ht_4045wt_902

I was thinking about this at $100  http://www.chefscatalog.com/product/21652-waring-professional-deep-fryer.aspx
waring is connected to Hobart who makes restaurant equipment.  And the heater element is removable from the oil.    I only plan to use it for fried okra and onions or other veg dipped in a cornmeal and beer batter.  I call it southern tempura.  So I might opt for the mini at $60.

I want a thermostat in my shower, so I don't have to fiddle and guess every time I get in.

Saw them in Japan, haven't seen them in the US.

They had voice activated showers at a pad I was gonna rent.

A refrigerator with an icemaker that is completely sealed off from the other compartments of the freezer to stop the ice from absorbing bad odors.

A sealed digital thermometer for cooking that is dishwasher safe.

LOVE these two.

I've lost count of how many thermometers I've had to toss after a kitchen "helper" drops them in with the silverware in the dishwasher.

If you get a deep fryer, cover shit around it with tinfoil when you use it in case of splattering. Over time the fryer will cause a build up of nasty goo, and that sucks.

All Black&Decker products should be banished from the face of the earth.

Except for Indiana - those backwards fucks should have inferior kitchen appliances.

Have you ever used coconut oil as frying oil?

Thoughts on heavy consumption of deep fried foods aside, the only thing the high number of broken fryers means is that Joe needs a higher quality deep-fryer.
A department store model is not going to hold up as well as the higher end home products or smaller commercial units would.

From other posts, I gather that Joe's figured this out, and isn't looking for the next model in the Sunday sales pages of the local newspaper.

blehhh.
aside from the occasional deep-fried hand cut o-rings, fries & chicken the wife cooks up (usually 2-3 times during the frozen months....in the garage...keeps the smell out the house), she will pan-fry , let's say, boneless chicken, cut up into strips, w/ a cracker-crumb (frosted flakes, believe it or not, are pretty fuckin' good as a crunchy chicken coating), dipped in egg...salt, pepper, sugar, oregano......key health word>>>>fried in OLIVE OIL.....
boo-yah, are those tasty....my kid goes koo-koo for 'em.

When you cook in olive oil you are technically sauteing because the smoke point of olive oil is too low for frying.

I don't own a deep fryer. The method you describe for making the chicken strips is how I do it. I use a combination of butter & olive oil, because I am a butter junkie. I'm just not going to lecture people who enjoy deep frying food, especially since I enjoy the occasional deep-fried delicacy on occasion.

When you cook in olive oil you are technically sauteing because the smoke point of olive oil is too low for frying.

If you mix olive oil, or butter with canola or other higher temp oil, you can pan fry and get the flavor without having to worry about scorching.
