Title: Which Firefox add-ons do you use?
Post by: Alex Libman on April 07, 2008, 02:35:19 PM
I use FireBug (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843), Chinese Perapera-kun (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3349), FoxMarks (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2410), Download Statusbar (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/26), AdBlock Plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865), Image Zoom (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/139), SearchBar AutoSizer (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1172), Text Size Toolbar (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/472), and OrbitDownloader (http://www.orbitdownloader.com/) (stand-alone app w/ Firefox integration).

Now that I've made this post, reinstalling Firefox again would take 2 minutes instead of 5, yay!

NoScript, nothing else.  Unless a less fugly-ass theme counts.

At work:
Adblock
Google Browser Sync (I *love* GBS and can't live without it)

At home, the above plus:
GreaseMonkey
DOM Inspector

At work I do real programming. I do frouffy web stuff for volunteer work (NHLA, FSP) hence the web development tools there,

I am a manager. I do not do "Project management".. though in all truth management and meetings and stuff takes a lot of otherwise quality programming time. Which is why I often wind up working 12+ hours per day.

Craigslist Image Preview, Stumble Upon, Tab Scope

There are several more that I would prefer to run, except that I'm using FF3 B4 and most of the add-ons don't work with it.

None, I use Opera and it has plenty of nice addons too.  Opera is much faster :) although it sometimes does break pages.

For the love of christ... you're a nosey one, aren't you?
The copy-and-paste of the internal HR website says of me:
Denis Goddard
Senior Development Manager ADE

... and now you're as wise as you were before

I Don't know what they are called, my husband usually gets all the addons for firefox, not me..... but we use the one that lets you download embedded objects, like youtube videos ......   open things in an IE tab, and other than that, just the ultra ultra basic things like adblock and such....

... Vimperator (which gives Firefox a vim-like interface and keybindings, perfect for the small screen on my Eee) instead of Mouse Gestures.

I agree that hiding extra GUI panels makes sense if using an ASUS Eee PC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASUS_Eee_PC) with 7" display, but using vi keys is probably an overkill.  The whole idea is that jumping back and forth between keyboard and mouse is a waste of time, which is why vi makes a whole lot of sense for things like shell scripting and command-line system administration, but if you're using a browser you're already married to the pointing device!  Sure you can enter links by number, but that's a pain in the arse and newer AJAX / Flash sites will be unusable.  A better solution would be a mouse-centric experience, with all toolbars and stuff "folded" out of view by default...

NoScript (ESSENTIAL security measure for disabling shitty javascript)
CustomizeGoogle (essential for websearches, autocompletes your search as you type and removes ads)
AdBlock Plus (essential if you don't want to see shitty ads everywhere)
ForecastFox Deluxe (Nice, SMALL weather icon in bottom right hand corner)
DictionarySearch (right click any word for its definition)
FireFTP (for when I need an ftp client)
I think there are a couple more I use at work but I can't think of them now...  I couldn't live without the first 3 though.

I've stopped using the ones I've crossed out above, and I started using Zoom toolbar (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6118) (zooms both text and images in Firefox 3), Flagfox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5791), and Transliterator (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/883).

How big is your monitor? On a 22" widescreen, it's damn near perfect, since 1680 pixels is too damn wide for a single browser window. I tried running two windows side-by-side, but that made them too narrow for a lot of sites.

I think you can set the tab-bar to auto-hide in the preferences, and if you have the Mouse Gestures extension, you can switch tabs without it, by holding down the right mouse button and using the scrollwheel.

Foxmarks is now Xmarks (http://www.xmarks.com/) - it's going multi-browser.

I still use the same add-ons I've mentioned above, except I'm on the "bleeding-edge" alpha version of Firebug (http://getfirebug.com/releases/firebug/1.4X/?C=M;O=A).

I'm still using Firefox.  I said I was gonna transition to Chromium once the Linux/BSD versions are stable for licensing reasons (http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=28400), but never did...

My current add-ons: Adblock Plus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865), Download Statusbar (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/26), Firebug (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1843), Flagfox (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/5791), Lazarus (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/6984), NoSquint (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2592), Transliterator (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/883), and Xmarks (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2410).

The Windows version also gets polluted with a "Free Download Manager plugin" and "Java Console" from third party apps.

From another thread (http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=32845):

[...]  Firefox extensions:
Adblock Plus - Blocks Ads

Gmail Notifier - Obvious
Reloadevery - Sets open tabs to reload periodically
Stumbleupon - Click for random awesome, vote for what you like or don't get better results the more you use.
Webmail Notifier - Obvious

[...]  and Firefox with:

AdBlock Plus
Download Helper
IE Tab
Weather Watcher Live
Xmarks

My laptop is outta service ATM but one I thought I'd mention is Illimitux which allows you to avoid megavideo time limits.
