It's not thing that are supposed to last failing that is the problem, it is things that are designed to throw away that makes most of the waste.

Which are made in... [insert Asian country here]

There are many plastic, packaging companies right here in the U.S. I used to work at one. It made me sick.

Yes, there are companies here. But there are much more benefits from items that come from the U.S. A little more quality control, no child labor/sweat shop conditions, they are benefiting our economy.

Let me bring you an example from my experience. I've have this old soldering station made by Sears, it was made in the U.S. the thing still works to this day, while my cousin's soldering iron that he just bought from Wal-Mart (China made) the handle melted and cracked two weeks after. That is why I am ok with paying just a little more and buying stuff that is made in the U.S., because I know I am getting a little bit of more quality and I'm not supporting any sweatshop conditions overseas.

You can't suggest that the tons and tons of polloution that we pump into the air, ground, and water is a good thing, can you?

Would'nt it be much better to have a clean earth?

No.

Yes.

I have heard way more propogand from the other side.[/b]

Neither side of the GW debate can claim to be free of propaganda. It's such a politicized debate that it has almost nixed the possibility of any real science being done.

Evidence? What is the "natural balance of the earth (sic)"?

Look, even if the polar ice caps don't melt, which they will if this warming trend continues,

And just as they have many other times in our planet's history...

it has been proven, its what causes the global warming that is the real problem, not the flood.

What exactly has been proven, and what is the proof?

Even if the costlines flood,

Wouldn't be the first time for that, either.

but how polluted would our air be by then.

After technology reaches a certain level, pollution drops. That's what's happening in the US and Europe. Developing countries are still increasing in their pollution. BTW, the developing countries are given a free ride in Kosovo while the US and European countries are put under strict regulations. What bullshit!

Not if we send half of her people into starvation in the process.

Right now there are only 6.2 billion of us. When I was a kid it was  was 3.5 billlon, and this rate of growth is excelleratiing.

Not true. In fact, in developed countries, the birth rate is decreasing. Again, that's something that happens with wealth. The environmentalist nuts want to reverse that.

BTW, that whole "sweatshop" thing is bullshit as well. Rememebr all of the people complaining about the Nike "sweatshops" in Taiwan? Well, there, Nike jobs are actually coveted. It's easy work compared to the alternatives, pays more than a living wage, and people in Taiwan as a result are able to afford cars for the first time. Pretty much all of them ride bicycles now, whereas almost none of them did before.

Shane, I do not think the issue of sweatshops in other countries (mostly 3rd world) is B.S. When I was taking cultural anthropology, we watched a video in class on working conditions outside of the U.S. These videos were made with hidden cammeras by an undercover B.B.C. reporter. There were horrors shown there, children being beaten over the head, fights breaking out between other children. They also showed another child that couldn't work because he got chemical poisoning from working a "double shift." It's not  just the kids too, their parents as well go through with this. There are shops where people sit there and solder PCB's all day long without masks or breaks. Let me tell you that's not a very healthy working condition. I remember when I was soldering car computer pats for my friend's dad's business, (I only did this for 5 hours a day with breaks) after a week my lungs started hurting and I felt nausiated. I bought a mask after that, and it took a week for me to get back to normal health. I cannot possibly believe that the conditionas that they work under are normal and healthy.

Also, these shops were built by their tyrannical governments without the people's permision. They showed how their farms were being buldozed while they stood and protested. Most of the companies that build over their land are from the U.S. and made deals with their governments to do whatever is necessary to get rid of the farming land. I believe that is called, globalization. Shane, those Nike jobs are "coveted" is because they have no other choice. Their original farming lands are destroyed, their economy is only holding up on these slave-like people. This is why I do not support many of these companies and choose not to buy their products. But hey... Soon we might join them if this government expansion continues.

Sorry for such a long post.

There you have your answer.

That isn't true. Not everyone there works for Nike. There are other jobs. Just none anywhere near as good.

Why are we discussing this in the shrine? Isn't that some sort of desicration or something. If I were a moderator I would move this portion of the thread to the issues board, maybe something like  http://bbs.freetalklive.com/index.php?topic=1962.0
