What torrent tracker should we use?
« on: July 04, 2009, 06:10:15 PM »

I want to leave Pirate Bay in protest of their selling out.  What should I use instead?

Maybe you should get the full picture on who bought it, and what their angle is.

People usually don't throw down a couple million on something they're gonna flip it on its head and fuck it all up.  They might have good intentions.

Speaking from a limited knowledge of the situation, I haven't checked back since the day they announced it.

If axxo is still putting movies there, it's probably kosher.

They plan to pull all pirate stuff from the site and only offer paid-content.

I completely agree with you Ian.  TPB is gone, hopefully new pirates will pick up where they left off and copy their work, since they actually want people to copy their work.

Demonoid is excellent, but you to have to have a referral to join. They also keep track of your leech/seed ratio, and boot the leechers, which I like. Axxo posts on there regularly.

Also consider the use of the metalink format as it can utilize FTP, HTTP, and P2P sources for downloading. This is especially good if you can't promise a torrent link, but maybe you know someone who's an AMPer that has an FTP or HTTP site to store the MP3s as a mirror.

Keeping a positive ratio is cake.  I uploaded a couple hundred gigs a while back when I was on a wifi leech, I'm good for years.  Now I just throttle my seeding to max the d/l speed, a good way to smash-and-grab popular shit with no exposure.

Never tried Demonoid.

I have no problem keeping a pos ratio. I generally will seed 1:1 on the popular stuff, and the more hard to find stuff (old sci-fi audiobooks, etc.) I will keep seeding. It takes forever to get some of that stuff, simply because the demand isn't there.

I like Demonoid because there is a lot of stuff there that you can't find elsewhere. They do have outside torrents as well, but they will be marked with an (external). There is kind of a community feel to it. (If you want a code, lmk.)

Oh, I should add...no porn there.

I'm really upset about this too.  There's not really a good replacement yet for pirate bay, but I'd recommond minonova or isohunt.  No way will I ever use demonoid or any service that forces me to sign into an account where my activity can be recorded.

That's my biggest issue with Demonoid.  I never signed up for an account with TPB either.  I think ISOhunt might be my choice now.

Just found out about http://openbittorrent.com/

Read more about it here: http://torrentfreak.com/openbittorrent-tracker-muscles-in-on-the-old-pirate-bay-090705/

I think this might be an even better solution.
