Fuck newsgroups.  I've wondered the same thing myself for numerous reasons and tried to surf newsgroups.  Huge pain in the ass.  Its just shitloads of text for miles.  Links and message boards, its a huge depository of shit all hosted by some kind of sub-net.  Basically, its like the basement of the internet, everything you would find on the internet is there to an extreme.  But, you have to spend alot of time digging around in forums to get what youre after.  Theres alot of clicking involved.

First you need a newsserver. Some ISP's used to provide them for free, but I haven't seen one of those in a while. There are pay servers that charge by bandwidth (GB of downloaded stuff). Occasionally you can find one on the net that is open by mistake.

Once you have a news server you can use a lot of software products to search for and download your stuff. You can even use Outlook Express. My favorite was XNews, available at http://xnews.newsguy.com.

Or you could just use a peer-to-peer app like emule, which is free and available from http://www.emule-project.net/home/perl/general.cgi?l=1     ... and doesn't require a new server.
