Doug Stanhope summed it up pretty well.....

That has to have been one of the best Stanhope routines ever and so true.

I don't know about 19, but I am somewhat happy with some folks in their 20's.  I have a lot of talk about liberty at the gym, and by far the most open-minded have been the people in their 20's.  (There aren't many younger than that there.)  Clearly, they have the indoctrination in their heads, but it seems easier to reach them with the liberty message (and wire around the indoctrination) than the older folks--especially the baby boomers (closer to my age--I'm sorta between them and GenX.)  Most of those people are lost, as are the vast majority of retirement-age people.

Thats partly because MANY of them didnt spend their lives with a self-sufficient frame of mind,  saving for a time when the government wouldnt be there to hand them their government cheese.  Its paycheck to paycheck for lots of these people who are too old to be of much worth in the workforce. Best they can hope for is their SS check and hope it gets them by.

Kinda hard to convince someone in that situation that they shouldnt rely on the govt for their retirement. Sucks for them, but thats the reality they just dont want to face. Best thing to do is forget about them and concentrate on the younger generations who still have time to prepare.

I'll go with Shaw on this - "my view of the average 19 year old is the standard - Snot faced know it all brats with an overblown sense of entitlement. Just like every 19 year old throughout history. Same as me when I was 19, same as *INSERT NAMES HERE*"

Although, in general people in this 15 to 25 age bracket now seem to be very socially awkward. Not sure why. Of course, that is only my small limited experience. I have not met all the people in that age group which would be damn near impossible as they don't socialize that often it seems.

I'd also like to add that today's 19 year olds pass out very easily but seem to have amazing recall on how their panties end up on the floor next to them. Very troubling for me I gotta say. My lawyer is having a hell of a time.

The advent of high speed internet and other social networking have contributed greatly to the lack of in person socializing. Back before internet, people went out more, "cruised" the town square, showing off the cars they built themselves, that type of shit. Back when I was in HS you got REALLY bored sitting at home with nothing to do, so you went out. Now, hell, if im bored I can come here and chat with you folks, play a game, watch a movie, etc etc...... right from the comfort of my laptop.

I'm 21, so I'm in your generation, Pizzly. I think "we" are generally starting to see that our future doesn't look so bright no matter what the gladhanders in TEAM RED/TEAM BLUE are telling us, and that's a positive sign.

I'm the same age, and I agree. I see people giving up on both parties, and mostly just giving any political AND religious thought the boot.

I disagree that Gen X is/was fail.  I feel like I'm finally catching my stride.

Gen X is just a bunch of late bloomers.  If you are interested in generational and historical patterns the following book is excellent.

Generations: the history of America's future, 1584 to 2069
 By William Strauss, Neil Howe

http://books.google.com/books?id=SHvH16kjW-UC&printsec=frontcover&dq=generations&source=bl&ots=sMRBSGCp3D&sig=B1cFj8zZMPXr81ene6pnyDIwSWY&hl=en&ei=fg-iTM_uD8fIswas6ZWKBQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=3&sqi=2&ved=0CCoQ6AEwAg#v=onepage&q&f=false
Yes, it is an old book written before GenX was coined as a term.   But it is very compelling read.
