What Could Ron Paul Actually Do as President?
« on: September 08, 2011, 09:29:26 AM »

What Could Ron Paul Actually Do as President?  Could he end the fed, bring home the troops, end the war on drugs, greatly reduce wellfare, etc.. Could he actually make some big changes or will it be a big stalemate?

It would be a terrible thing for libertarianism if Paul actually managed to land the presidency. There really isn't much he could do from a practical point, and whoever gets the job is going to take the blame when the economy really starts to fall apart in a year or so.

In fact, I doubt either of the main parties is all that eager to take the office next time around, other than perhaps to loot as much as they can while the getting is good.

Maybe they're just planning to use it as a stepping stone toward King of the World.

He would be in a position to talk to the entire country.

He could pardon Bradley Manning.
He could pardon Bernard Von Nauthouse effectively legalizing alternative currency and then he wouldn't have to mess with the FED at all.
He could stop the drug war by simply stopping all federal enforcement.
He could simply open things so that even the truly sheepish people can see what scum their Representatives are.
He could, just-for-fun, concentrate the FBI on corruption in the public sector to give the enforcers something to do.

He would take the blame for everything bad on the planet thats gonna happen in the next couple of years. The Libertarians would be blamed for it all.

"SEE!?!?!?  WE GAVE YOU LIBERTARI-TARDS A CHANCE AND YOU FUCKED IT ALL UP!!!"

I hope to hell he doesn't get elected prez. Doesn't matter really, just saying.

Danno. I sort of agree with quickmike. The truth is, with the only other option being to build floating societies I say why not role the dice.
I remember things looked pretty bleak in the late seventies and Reagan brought back the optimism and things got pretty good.
Or maybe everyone just got high.

Gotta admit the concern that he "can't win" is a bit of a comfort right now.  The thing that bugs me is if the people capable of rigging things decide to rig it in his favor to blame the inevitable collapse on him.  They already blame "deregulation" for the economy, etc.  He'd be the convenient whipping boy.  If I were the social conservative type (and they probably don't control much) or the lefty type (who knows?) I'd be looking forward to this sort of thing happening, and being able to blame the people I really hate.  If you're socially conservative, it's "the liberals" and if you're leftist, it's "the conservatives."  Either way, your world gives you a break from reality as you blame the guy who just stepped aboard when the ship sank.

Interestingly enough, I remember similar sentiment (whoever wins gets the shaft) in the election of 1980, and look how differently that turned out.  Yet, I'm pretty sure the situation is much worse than Jimmy Peanuts left it (and he actually did some good things--especially compared to how he is looked at historically.)

I actually believe he could do good and greatly increase freedom in this country. After a year or two of "austerity" riots, I believe most people would settle down and be satisfied with the changes.  I still think that future generations would face the growing government problem all over again.  All of this is assuming he might actually win, which is a pretty bleak outlook.
