Gotta admit the concern that he "can't win" is a bit of a comfort right now. The thing that bugs me is if the people capable of rigging things decide to rig it in his favor to blame the inevitable collapse on him. They already blame "deregulation" for the economy, etc. He'd be the convenient whipping boy. If I were the social conservative type (and they probably don't control much) or the lefty type (who knows?) I'd be looking forward to this sort of thing happening, and being able to blame the people I really hate. If you're socially conservative, it's "the liberals" and if you're leftist, it's "the conservatives." Either way, your world gives you a break from reality as you blame the guy who just stepped aboard when the ship sank.
Interestingly enough, I remember similar sentiment (whoever wins gets the shaft) in the election of 1980, and look how differently that turned out. Yet, I'm pretty sure the situation is much worse than Jimmy Peanuts left it (and he actually did some good things--especially compared to how he is looked at historically.)
