I just tried some Norwegian food called grøt. It was yummy!

Edit: It's like rice pudding minus the raisins, not as sweet, covered in cinnamon sugar and slathered in butter.

Picked up something new at Trader Joes today: Harvest Grains Blend. Israeli couscous, red quinoa, couple types of orzo, and baby garbanzo beans.
Cooked it in veggie broth, and set aside to cool for a salad. Parsley, mint, cucumber, yellow bell, red onion, grape tomatoes, lemon juice, olive oil and red wine vinegar.
Topped it with sliced grilled chicken breast (for everybody but me) and crumbled feta cheese (everybody).

Off to prep dinner now:
Meatloaf (beef & lamb)
Potatoes & Parsnips baked with Garlic & Cream
Broccoli & Carrots

Haven't decided if I'll mix up a batch of whipping cream biscuits or not. If I opt for an apple crisp for dessert, then the biscuits will be skipped.
Even I have my limits on the daily intake of butter and heavy cream.

Christmas tamales and egg.

I'm such a beaner! But it is frickin good!

Christmas tamales?  What are those?

Tamales are the traditional Christmas dish in Mexico. And, more and more, in my neck of the woods. The Mexican grocery store down the street is churning them out like crazy right now. I've considered picking some up for Christmas Eve, but we already have a traditional pre-holiday meal: fish from Ivar's, a Washington State fish place.

Perhaps I didn't mention that Mexicans tend to have huge families. For example, my mother has 13 brothers and sisters. And on my wife's mom's side she has 9 brothers and sisters.

Also, bulimia involves eating the food and then throwing it up.  I just don't eat in the first place.  I'll admit to trying the whole puking thing in the past, but it didn't work for me, so the first time was the last time.

I just ate a ton of Chinese food. Eggrolls, wontons, white rice with potatoes, a little bit of deep fried squid, chicken, and much much more.  :)

That stuff in the picture you sent me and described as miscellaneous...it was squid, wasn't it?  You just didn't want to tell me!

Are the Habanero chips better than the zapp's & lay's jalapeno chips? Those kettle cooked jalapeno chips with sabra roasted garlic hummus make for a plate full of heaven, but I'm willing to shoot higher, especially when I hit the hot weather salt cravings.

As for tonight's dinner, was Pho Bo (Vietnamese Noodle soup), with basil lemongrass meatballs.
Baked a round of rustic bread and a batch of carrot spice muffins too, so it's safe to say nobody went hungry.

Not sure, I've never had the other ones. All I know is anything I've had of Tim's is the bestest chips I've ever had, and the habenero ones are the best.

Tree  limbs took out power from a few spots around the neighborhood around lunch today.
Power hasn't been restored yet. We went to Ted's Montana Grill for supper.
Then, back home to finish the extreme moose tracks ice cream in the freezer, before it completely melted.

I want my power & wifi back! Posting from the iPhone is kind of a pain.

I went to a girlfriend's house and was roped in to making quesadillas.  Shredded chicken simmered in salsa, hot sauce, and taco spices, cheese, fresh salsa, sour cream, etc.  Homeslice wanted rice in hers so I made spanish rice as well.  Didn't have any this evening though.

Will be having some vanilla cake with raspberry filling for dessert later.  I hope.  I'm very full.

I went to this new place yesterday, and ordered a cheeseburger and fries. She asked me what I wanted on it...I said, "everything on it....BUT...NO RELISH!!!" She thought that was funny. While waiting, I noticed the other fellow working there (prolly her husband) putting together a BLT sandwich on toast...and I'm watching him do it, and he was TOTALLY focused....it was nice to see...he did such a nice job. They seem like nice people.

Hmmm.  Odd.  I've had the craving for a buffalo chicken wrap for a few days.  And I just don't know where the Hell to get one!  I like them with ranch dressing on them instead of bleu cheese, though.  The buffalo sauce is very spicy to me, and I suffer for it afterwards, but damn I love those things!

At TGI Friday's (Not great, I know), they used to have this buffalo chicken salad that I liked.  It was part of this Atkins menu they did, which at the time worked out fine because I was on Atkins - but now I wish they still had it just because it was tasty.

Where I live, we're all about the Buffalo wings.  We even have contests.  I could take you to at least thirty bars that each have the best friggin wings you've ever had.

And I gotta say, the nationally recognized Buffalo flavor that you get in bottles is a joke.  I've had it elsewhere when traveling.  Its sorta orange in color, like you get in Hooters.  The good stuff has a slight touch of BBQ sauce flavor, its darker and sweeter.  That orange stuff is nasty.

Yeah, Hooters sells it in the grocery store.  Little fat jars, like a sawed off beer can, but glass.  Theres a brand called Nance's that is typical Buffalo, not bad.  In fact, the "original" Buffalo sauce, from the Anchor Bar is commonly available, they started the whole thing.  A little bar in Buffalo, and thus it began.

Quote
In the heat of the night, back in 1964, Mrs. Bellissimo developed a sauce that has created a national, make that international, sensation. The Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York is the undisputed home of the Buffalo Chicken Wing.  Frank & Teressa's Original Anchor Bar Buffalo Wing Sauce is the sauce that has taken the humble chicken wing from local reviews to national acclaim

Most businesses try to bring you in with the "we have the best wings" claim. It's such bullshit. If yer fuckin' drunk enough, it will taste good enough.

I never fall for that crap. I just eat it.

Some are better than others.  Its not just the sauce, its how they cook the wings.  The oil has to be 375 degrees, the wings have to be room temp at cooking, they cannot be precooked or re-dipped to heat them up for the customer.  They can't be too small, or too big.  They definitely can't be frozen, ever.  They cannot be cooked in an oven, ever.  Black pepper should not be used to give the sauce a zing, ever.

Wings are like Scotch.  You could do them a lot of ways, then its just whiskey.

The most secret ingredient to "wings" is Led Zeppelin music playing in the background. You know it's true, Brasky. It's totally psychological. Every single time I've been to some god damn place, It's always the same: "Oh ya....we got the best wings in town!" ...and the party always falls for it, as if this time...it's going to be different. But, it's always the same.

The only real way to know if the food is good at some place is to notice how big the line-up is on a Friday night. If people are waiting in line, outside...IN THE FUCKING COLD, then it would prolly be a good idea to check that place out sometime on a Tuesday afternoon.

Actually, the best place I know has no seats.  Its a tiny hole, take out only.  They've been selling pizza, wings, and hoagies (heros, subs, whatever) for about ten years.

Home made almond chicken.

That sounds good.  I realize it involves almonds and chicken, but I eat so much chicken that things get bland and I end up refusing to eat since I don't want the same thing all the time.  In other words, I'm curious as to if you'll give up the recipe for that.   :D

That sounds good too.  I'd die if I ate jalapeno anything, but something a bit spicy sounds really appetizing.  I've been in these meetings for yesterday and today and it's like, all they have are donuts, cookies, candy, etc.  It's gross.

Yeah, I got mobilized with the 1/18th Cav (Alpha Troop) out of Cali (its an army infantry outfit - totally sold out my EGA for 20,000 bonus in the Gaurd). It sucked because now I'll have to do my probation with the LAPD over again, anyways, I'm here on Camp Attebury where our unit has been training up. I tore my ACL when we were doing riot control training at Camp Muscatatuk (sp?) and now I'm stuck in limbo waiting to go to Fort Knox for ortho surgery. I haven't run or worked out in 2 months, I've gained 20 lbs, and my knee fucking hurts. Life kinda sucks. Figured I'd occupy my time by visiting everyone here under another alias so I don't get pictures of dicks all over my account. I figure by now I've shown everyone my good side and won't get my account trashed this time. Instead of flaming people I just ignore them now. Sorry I lied man, I hope you understand. I needed to rebuild a reputation so I could actually come on here and discuss stuff.

Nothing yet, but I have a pot of sauce simmering at the back of the stove, and am getting ready to drop chicken basil meatballs into olive oil.
I'm thinking whole wheat linguine. Don't feel like the usual brown rice pasta today.
Have about 1/2 the rustic bread left from Tuesday, too. Will heat it up & slather with butter.
Should probably make a salad too.

Well, so far everything seems to be going as promised. I've kept my nose clean and my account's been free of phalases and whatever else. Being ID'd as a troll independent of my old identity kinda sucks, but this time I don't think I really earned it in the same way as before. This time I'm a troll for use'n them big wordy paragraphs and not takin' into account that some libermatarians were born under the power lines. I mean, if you don't like them big wordy paragraphs then don't read them big wordy paragraphs, right?! Just put me on iggy and keep up the "good fight" by posting one-liners and assuming superiority in everything...argh. Sorry, I'm ranting. Anyways, yeah, it didn't work out as well as I had planned but, considering the state that my last account was in when I left, things are a lot better. I'm kinda liking this whole dmr235 thing.

It is extremely good. I use vanilla soy milk and blueberries/strawberries with bananas though. Chocolate and bananas combined is not a big flavor thrill for me.

Avocado & mixed berries makes for an amazing smoothie.

Is this something that you pick up from the prepared section and just messed with to make it better?  The only Whole Foods even remotely close to here is like 40 miles away (Sort of close to where I work though).  I've been curious for a while now because I hear various people talk about the place on here and I'm jealous because I don't have one close by.

I just had to Google Kinder surprise eggs.  Crazy shit.  Never heard of it before.

They have a salad bar...they also have a sushi bar (Chef Yamada has become my BFF). You can pile whatever you like, but you pay by weight...so I totally cheat and I put my dressing into a separate cup ;)

I love Whole foods because the food is fantastic and fresh...I'm not really into the "green" movement just for the sake of being green, which alot of people that shop there are. I just don’t like my food to be processed 30 times before I eat it.

and Kinder Surprise are SOOOO hard to find here in the U.S. I luckily have an "in" at the local European store and I gets mine for free. I love the toys, its like Christmas everyday! The chocolate is super good also.

Don't do it, Lindsey! Once you shop at Whole Foods, you'll never be happy with regular grocery stores again. Before you know it, you'll be seeking out an actual farmers market, because it is the only way to improve upon the crispy / juicy / flavor / freshness of your favorite fruits & veggies. (That, and because the farmers market has  the super healthy goodies at much, much lower prices.)

Seriously though, go. Keely's right - the prepared food section and salad / olive / sushi bars are quite lovely. I do my own prep, so don't get much from that section, but for just one person, it would be a godsend. Healthier and tastier than fast food, and cheaper than a restaurant.

Speaking of prepared food, my leftover moroccan lamb stew & couscous is on the stove.

Pita and hummus is one of my favorite snacks or light meals.  I think extra garlic is my favorite, but I also like the artichoke and spinach varieties.  I always warm the pita bread in the microwave for a few seconds before eating it.  That makes it nice and soft (and warm).  Yummy :)

Recently, I haven't been eating all that much.  I'm just getting over a particularly nasty stomach bug which made me feel like death for the better part of 24 hours.  I'm still trying to get over it, so today I made it out to the grocery store and got myself some good sickness recovery foods.  I'm a fan of fruit juice popsicles, and I discovered that the Jewel near me does carry Vernor's ginger ale, which is awesome.  I don't normally drink soda so I'd never looked for it here before.

Yah, I live on Excedrin...I hate taking meds for any reason, but my migraines are debilitating for me. Like I can't even talk. It sucks...so I catch it early.

I’m getting them a lot lately because believe it or not a handful of espresso beans and 2 cups of coffee is actually me trying to "cut-back" on my caffeine consumption.  :( sucks.

We should have an Excedrin migraine club...only hot girls with headaches allowed...

I get the same way.  I don't get them nearly as bad anymore, but when I was a kid they were horrific.  My parents took me to the hospital once when I was like, three for them and the ER staff thought I had a brain tumor or something.  I remember having to get all different kinds of scans and stuff.  Ick.  I fucking hate headaches, and I will fill myself up with pills until it goes away.

This is one issue where I think we can lay a lot of the blame on society. The actual nutrition and fitness we're taught as young girls flies out the window when we're bombarded with images of media "perfection", not to mention the food & body image issues we absorb from our mothers, aunts, sisters from the time we're born. Boys get the message "get active, don't eat so much crap" for health & weight; girls get the "deny yourself" message. It sets so many up for a lifetime of feeling like they're powerless about food, which manifests itself in guilt and being a control freak about food, or into guilt and giving up on trying. It sucks!

Sorry for the rant. I'm the daughter of a woman who has had a lifetime of food & weight issues, and was herself the daughter of a woman with body image issues (good weight, but controlling about food.) I still fight the guilt & bullshit that started as a child, and am trying my utmost to avoid passing those things onto my daughter.

Fucking kick-ass mom. I pale in comparison to your mommy skills.

My 3 year old is lucky if I remember to pack a snack for her pre-school lunch. I envy good mommies; I just don't feel like I have it in me. :(

Maybe it was because my mom was shit at being a mom too…I was cooking dinner for me and my little sis when I was 6 due to my mom’s sex/drug addictions.

I think I’m an ok mom, I do my best, but I always see those mom’s who are always creating shit, making smiley faces out of broccoli, going to PTA meetings and cooking healthy breakfast, lunch, and dinners for their kids and it amazes me how they do it.

Kudos to you.  :)

This makes me think of my grandmother.  Whenever I stay with her (she lives in Indianapolis), I cannot go in to the kitchen without following me making sure that I'm not eating anything.  It's ridiculous.  Sometimes I just want a glass of water without somebody shoved up my ass while I'm trying to enjoy a vacation.

And my mother is a whole different story.  She's about 5'11 and a size three.  Thin as a board.  Eats like a pig at dinner and shoves her face with desserts with her husband in front of the television, but doesn't really eat during the rest of the day.  Great.

Thanks, Keely, but I don't get mommy credit for the flyer. This is for a client. They're doing a fundraiser for the town's little league program. I'm charging, but then donating the $ back to the group (tax deductible - yea!)

I do read to 2nd & 4th grade classes each week, work in the library (now called media center) at the middle school, rotate between class parties for the kids (down to two, now that the big kid's in jr. high), and pack healthy lunches every morning, usually with homemade bread. Can I claim mommy credits for that?

And... you're daughter's three. You've not been at this very long. I was the same way, about 11-12 years ago. It gets easier with practice.

Homemade bread??? Damn, and yes it totally counts, and pls. adopt me. :)

Thanks for the encouragement; luckily she is still too young to know I suck...LOL.

Update: I just ate 4 strawberries and a teriyaki bowl with brown rice. Deriscious.

I think I'd like to be Joy's kid.

This weekend, any - probably all - of my children would be happy to change places with you. They're participating in a 5k, rain or shine, and hanging out with dad while I run a half. Granted, I'll have a big pot of chicken noodle soup waiting at home, and will then spend the rest of Saturday & Sunday watching either LOTR or HP movies, back to back.

Not M&Ms, but regular milk chocolate chips.  It really is good.  It's horrible for you of course, but so good.

I made cubed steak and baked potatoes for dinner for my mom and myself, and some corn.  Strawberry shortcake for dessert, and I might be trying out a new cookie recipe here soon.  I'll test it out on my munchkins at work.

I'm so full I'm going to asplode, and I haven't had dessert yet!

Trust me on the M&Ms. When you have the hot popcorn the chocolate melts and is x-tra gooey when you bite into them, in addition, the chocolate won't get all over your hands.

Doesn't the dye in the shell coating get all over the place? I can see it keeping the chocolate from getting everywhere, but it seems like the hot oil would cause the coloring to smudge.

It does. But I think that is easier to deal with than melted chocolate. Lets not forget that the candy shell tastes good too. Give it a shot, you will see what I mean.

Black and white chocolate chip cookies.  I'm not eating them at the moment, but I made them earlier this evening.

Someone posted this recipe in a thread on TotalFark.com, and I thought it was interesting, so I picked up some Oreo cookies at the store the other day and decided to try it out.  I tasted one when I took them all out of the oven, and they're pretty tasty.

I put them in for the suggested 13 minutes, and they turned out a bit on the crispy side.  They're a nice combo of both at 10-11 minutes for me.  Your oven will obviously be different, so I would advice doing a test couple of cookies on these.  They were kinda wacky.   :D

Thanks for the tips on the bake time. My oven is kind of wimpy. I'll try 12 minutes, and adjust up to 15 if needed.
BTW, kids are competing to be the official cookie crusher. I may be able to their dreams of eating large amounts of broken Joe Joes (Trader Joe's Oreos) to get them to finish cleaning out under their beds. If so, will be major win.

And, in the spirit of sharing recipes, here's one I just received via RSS feed that seems perfect for you:

Batch # 3 just went into the oven. Pretty good. Kids are super happy. I used half white and half semi-sweet chocolate chips, to stick with the black & white thing. A bit too sweet for my tastes, but that's easily fixed by slapping two of them together with crunchy peanut butter.

Thanks for the recipe, Lindsey.

About 11 minutes. I pulled them out while they were still gooey, so that by the time they cooled, they were crunchy, but still chewy on the inside.

12 minutes is just about perfect. The cookies which started as slightly smaller scoops of dough are crunchy/chewy, and the slightly larger ones came out chewy/crunchy. Works great for the preference split around the house.

Oh! Should mention mine were with whole wheat flour. Some cookie recipes don't take that substitution well, but these did.

A small percentage of your McDonald's purchase goes to support gun control legislation.  AND...  McDonald's is nasty, while the breakfast is edible it is still inferior to all competitors.  Unfortunately, Chipotle grill is owned by the same guys, that makes me sad.

I'm currently scouring my past recipes and a couple of cookbooks, working on a plan & shopping list for this week. Will be fixing separate kid and grown up meals most of the week, as I'm swearing off meat. I've been feeling increasingly "icky", and I think the everyone eats the same dinner plan is causing it. I've been eating meat/poultry 4-6 times a week ever since we started it at the first of the year, and I just don't have the general sense of well-being as before.

Black Bean Chili (Photo posted last night):

Start with 1-1/2 cup dry black beans, soaked overnight, rinsed, then simmered with a couple cloves of garlic for an hour (no salt!) and rinsed again.
Or, just use 2 cans of black beans (but rinse VERY well, to avoid a lot of the bean aftermath)

1 Large Red Onion, chopped
1 Sweet Onion, chopped
4-8 Garlic Cloves, chopped
2-4 Jalapenos, seeded & chopped
2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
2 Cups Broth (I use homemade vegetable stock, but store chicken/veg/beef is good)
14 oz Can of Diced Tomatoes
1 Tablespoon Chili Powder
Salt & Pepper to taste.

Cook 1/2 the onions in olive oil over medium low heat until tender. *Add the remaining onions and garlic, raise temperature to medium high and cook until veggies begin to brown.
Stir in Jalapenos, chili powder, salt and pepper. After 2-3 minutes, add tomatoes and broth.
If using beans which were soaked & simmered, add now, and simmer for 30 minutes, covered. Remove lid for final 30 minutes, allowing some of the liquid to cook off.
If you're using canned beans, wait until the vegetables have been simmering for 30 minutes before adding, and then just let them simmer for that last 30 minutes.

*I read about staging the vegetables when I was working my way through cajun recipes a while back. I do this with many dishes. (Dirty rice, corn chowder, vegetable curries are examples) You end up with onions/garlic which are sweet from having been started slower, as well as the sharper taste from the batch which browned quickly. It does seem to add depth to the flavor.

I thought the folks in Utah were supposed to be very pro-freedom.
Don't they want everybody to have the freedom to be just like them?

Exactly. It's obnoxious. UT is a pretty place, particularly the southern part of the state.

And elk is delicious.

OMG - It's almost 3:30, and I have no idea what I'm fixing for dinner.
It's semi-panic time, because I do not want to go to the grocery store with kids in tow.
Off for a scavenger hunt in the freezer and veg. bin.

I was in Park City.  I skied Deer Valley, The Canyons, and Park City while I was there.  The snow wasn't great, but it wasn't awful either.  I've certainly skied worse :)

Edamame.  The farmer's market near me sells soybeans in their pods by the bag.  Throw some salt on those suckers, steam them for a bit, and mmmm.....great snack.

All the ingredients used to make Eagle Brand chocolate peanut butter bars...mixed together into one dry batter like mix.
For lunch I had 1 baked potato with cheddar cheese and sour cream. A small salad with ranch and croutons. A polish sausage on white bread with catchup. 2 glasses of milk.
Om nom nom.

I am not eating anything at the moment, but I just boiled some chicken breasts to make chicken salad, and I boiled potatoes to make potato salad.  For some reason I'm having a craving for these things lately.  As soon as my chicken cools down enough, I'll shred it and make the chicken salad.  Hopefully I'll have enough energy to make the tomato soup I planned on making this evening, and have the chicken salad sandwich and tomato soup that I had planned.

There just are not enough hours in the day, I tell you.

Someone at work gave me a ludicrously large lemon...

So today I marinated a couple of chicken breasts in the juice of said lemon and some seasoning. Then I made kabobs with the same chicken breast, orange bell peppers, and sweet onion. I threw the kabobs on the grill outside and put some asparagus on the top rack.

Served that all with some couscous.

We had the rest of the Green Tomato & Corn Soup I made the other night. That stuff was really, REALLY good.
Used veggie broth & black beans, instead of chicken. I bet even Blackie would approve.

(The kids ate sandwiches. Once they found out the name of the soup, they refused to eat, on the grounds that green tomatoes are weird. What's weird is that they ate it for dinner with flatbread the other night without any trouble. Maybe I should never tell them what's in the food again.)

Ooh. Let me know how they are. Two people in my house would probably love those.
I would not be one of them, though I'd be willing to try it.
(My daughter's favorite snack after school, while I'm cooking dinner is anchovy stuffed olives.)

An NYC Bagel Deli just moved in across the street from work.  I just went there for lunch today and was very impressed.  It's about $8 for a very large sandwich which includes a pickle made from half a cucumber and a small side of potato salad, etc.  It's definitely got the edge over Panera in my book as far as sandwiches go.  They're better and slightly cheaper for similar amounts of foodage :)  Panera still has the awesome soup+breadbowl combo that I love.

You know, prices tend to be inflated in Chicago, but that does sound like a pretty sweet deal.  What's it called?  I'd like to visit a place like that next time I'm in town.

That's non-descriptive.  Like quarter of the world's cuisine originates from China.

I have to admit Alex, it bothers me when someone describes another person as being a Chinese speaker in place of Mandarin, or Cantonese. Its about as accurate as saying someone speaks a Latin-varient language in place of saying they speak French, Spanish, or Italian. Only a person with a clouded Eurocentric viewpoint speaks this way.
Title: Re: What are you eating?
Post by: Alex Libman 14 on June 19, 2009, 01:15:32 PM
Yeah, but, to nitpick - just saying "Chinese" (language) can be assumed to mean Mandarin, at least from the point of view of the "national" language (Mainland government is pushing Mandarin education, and so are Taiwan and Singapore, etc).  The same could have been said about the written language, except the traditional / simplified divide.

For cuisine, on the other hand, the generalization is much more lossy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lossy_compression).  Dishes from one part of Greater China can have very little similarity to dishes from a region on the other side of the country.

Finished my first 200 mile relay (12 person team-31 hrs) today, so I'm eating anything I damn well please.
(Had 2 granola bars, grilled chicken sandwich and pretzel chips during the 18 hours that had my N Georgia legs)

So far:
Greek yogurt w/honey & granola
Bacon Egg & Cheese Panini and Venti Latte
Bowl of beans & rice (at finish)

Planning something with fish and a couple of margaritas tonight. Then sleep. Kinda punchy.

They don't really give any percentages in the article. I don't get it. Weight reduction usually improves heart health - is the drug killing more than half the people taking it?

If doctors are monitoring patient's progress on a new drug, can they not catch any heart issues before they become life threatening? Millions of women take a drug every day which is know to increase risk of stroke, and I don't see anybody clamoring for a ban of all birth control pills. They warn about interactions, possible complications of age, and say "get regular checkups".

When I was on it I had a full panel of blood tests I think every three months, and the doctor would always ask me how I felt, and listen to things going on inside me for any abnormalities.  I didn't really feel any adverse effects from it.  But my thought is as stated previously.  The drug is not meant for people to take it at the highest dose and still go to McDonald's twice a day to try and win Monopoly there.  It's really to help kickstart your metabolism and curb your appetite so that you can see results quicker, and keep a higher level of motivation.  The way it was explained to me, was that it certainly is not meant for long-term therapy.  It's like any other diet aid - to help you learn better behaviors, and eventually you won't need it.  It's usually only prescribed 3 months at a time anyway.
